Fantasy Baseball Update 8/14/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
August 14, 2014
It’s Thursday, and around here that means it’s time once again to start looking forward to the big weekend series in the MLB. We’ve got plenty of intriguing matchups on the schedule, and for us fantasy owners that means lots of opportunity lurking for our roster. That said, let’s take a closer look at some of the up-and-comers who might have big performances in the upcoming games.
Michael A. Taylor, OF, Washington Nationals: The era of Taylor has officially begun, and with his inaugural outing going so well, there’s no reason not to jump on the bandwagon. He went 2-for-4 in his debut Tuesday, slapping a homer with a pair of RBI. He followed that up with an 0-fer yesterday, though.
Taylor has torched opposing pitching in Double and Triple-A this season so far, and if he keeps hitting the Nats will keep him around for a while. He’ll see Pittsburgh at home this weekend.

Dustin Ackley, 2B/OF, Seattle Mariners: We’ve visited with Ackley a few times this season, and here he is again. Heading into the Toronto finale, he had hits in three of his previous four, with a run, two RBI and a stolen base to his credit. He had another hit yesterday to keep it going.
Ackley has been super-good since hitting his stride last month, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. You’d be remiss to overlook him in Detroit this weekend as the Mariners embark on a long road trip.
Yangervis Solarte, 2B/3B/SS, San Diego Padres: We’ve also seen Solarte in this space a few times as well, so he’s no stranger really. He came up empty Tuesday, but before that had managed a four-game hit streak with three runs, a homer and two RBI in that frame. He had a hit and a run yesterday, but did leave with a “mild” oblique injury. Prospective owners will have to keep an eye on that.
Solarte plays some very sought-after fantasy positions, so any time he’s doing well you’ll see a big spike in ownership. The Padres are hitting the road this weekend as well; They’ll be in St. Louis to start out their road trip.
Brandon McCarthy, SP, New York Yankees: Now let’s move over to the mound and check on McCarthy. The bad news on him is that he’s coming off a loss, allowing two earned in 6 1/3 against Cleveland. The good news is that he won his previous four games before that.
McCarthy will also get a reasonable matchup tomorrow as the Yanks start out their series against Tampa Bay. We’d imagine he’ll be good for at least a quality start down there in Florida.
Danny Duffy, SP/RP, Kansas City Royals: Another trending SP is Duffy, and he’s coming off a win in his last appearance. He allowed four earned on three hits against the Giants across 6 2/3 innings. Overall, he’s only allowed six hits in his last two starts combined.
Duffy sports a 2.57 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the season, numbers which should get your attention right away. He’ll try to improve them tomorrow as the series opens up in Minnesota.
