Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – Friday, April 17th 2015

  • High Cost – Max Scherzer – Washington Nationals

There are a lot of “aces” on the mound on Friday but I like Scherzer today mainly due to the fact that he is going against a Phillies line-up that is average 7.7 k/per game. Scherzer has recorded 8 strikeouts in both his starts this year, which included his opening day start against Philadelphia in which he scattered 6 hits over 6.0 innings while giving up just 1 ER.

  • Value Pick – Jimmy Nelson – Milwaukee Brewers

Jimmy Nelson dominated Triple-AAA last year and although he struggled a bit when he got called up late in 2014, he is a power pitcher that has the potential to pile up the K’s when his stuff is on. Nelson will get another opportunity to face the Pirates which he already dominated this season to the line of 7.0 IP, 0 R, 2H, 2 BB, 9 K’s.

  • High Cost – Buster Posey – San Francisco Giants

Buster Posey is batting an incredible .550 (11-20) against Josh Collmenter in his career with three home runs and 9 RBI’s. Collmenter (0-2, 6.52 ETA, 2.17) has really struggled early in the season leaving pitches over the plate and although Posey was 0-4 with an RBI against Collmenter on opening day, I except Posey to be able to do some damage today.

  • Value Pick – Evan Gattis – Houston Astros

Evan Gattis has been a huge disappointment for the Astros early in the season, however, Gattis finally was able to display his power as he lunched off Oakland’s R.J. Alverez that went 421 feet over the fences. Gattis has recorded a hit in each of the last three games and with his power and potential to be able to go yard with any swing, makes him a good value bet.

First Base

  • High Cost –Lucas Duda – New York Mets

Lucas Duda continues to hit the ball well racking up two more doubles in last night’s contest and is hitting .346 over the last 7 games. David Phelps isn’t the worst on the mound but should give Duda some chances to do some damage. Duda is also hitting .333 and slugging .593 against righties so far this season.

  • Value Pick – Mike Napoli – Boston Red Sox

Mike Napoli was tearing the cover off the ball in Spring Training and although he has struggled so far in the regular season, he is hitting .400 (4-10) with 2 BB and 2 HR against Ubaldo Jimenez in his career. The Red Sox as a team have fared well against Jimenez in the past which should give Napoli a few solid RBI’s chances in this one.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Dustin Pedroia – Boston Red Sox

Similar to Napoli, Pedroia has a career batting average of .412 (7-17) against Ubaldo Jimenez. Pedroia, who spend the majority of 2014 battling injuries, looks as if he has got some of his power back as he has already hit three homeruns on the season and is batting .545 at Fenway Park early in the season.

  • Value Pick – Johnny Giavotella – Los Angeles Angels

Johnny Giavotella is certainly not a household name, but he has gotten off to a nice start of the Angels this season hitting at a solid .296 mark. Giavotella is finally getting a chance in the big leagues after posting a career .315 average in the minors, and although he has struggled against the top pitchers of MLB, I think he’ll be able to handle Roberto Hernandez and get his 4th multi-hit game of the season.

  • High Cost – Jed Lowrie – Houston Astros

Jed Lowrie has a lot of experience against Jared Weaver with 22 AB’s in his career and although his numbers aren’t outstanding, he does have a career .273 average with a HR and 7 RBI’s against Weaver. I don’t think there is a lot of great value at the top of the SS board for Friday as Tulowitzki has a tough matchup against Kershaw, Desmond has struggled all year, and Reyes left last night’s game with an injury. Lowrie has been on a tear lately batting .400 with 2 homeruns over his last 7 games and thing and think out of all the SS at the top of the list, he is the one go with.

  • Value Pick – Zack Cozart – Cincinnati Reds

Zack Cozart has the more success against Michael Wacha than anyone else currently on the Reds line up as Cozart has a career .429 (6-14) average against Wacha. Cozart certainly doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to power or steals, but he is currently on a 5 game hit streak and could put together a few hits and runs for your team for a very low price.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Josh Donaldson – Toronto Blue Jays

Donaldson has hit .357 over the last 7 days and currently is riding a 3 game hit streak in which he is batting .500 (6-12). As I mentioned yesterday, Donaldson has power and just got moved to the 3-spot ahead of Bautista and Encarnacion which means he should be seeing plenty of good pitches to hit. The current Blue Jays are batting .391 against Julio Teheran so there is a good chance that Donaldson will have some RBI opportunities in this one.

  • Value Pick – Trevor Plouffe – Minnesota Twins

Trevor Plouffe might be going against the reigning AL Cy-Young Award winner in Corey Kluber, however, he has had great success against Kluber with a lifetime average of .360 (9-25) with 2 HR and 7 RBI’s. Plouffe does have a bit of power with a career 52 career HR’s over three season and we’re going home he can get his third HR off Kluber in this one.

  • High Cost – Nelson Cruz – Seattle Mariners

Not only has Cruz batted .391 with an astonishing 6 HR’s over the past 7 days, he has also homered in his only two plate appearances against Yovani Gallardo in his career. Cruz is one of the hottest hitters in baseball right now and with the fact that most of what he is hitting is going over the fence, he is worth the high price tag right now.

  • High Cost – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels

After a bit of a slow start, in terms of what we expect from Mike Trout, Trout has been on an absolute tear over his last 7 games hitting .524 (11-24) with 4 BB and 2 SB. During this streak, Trout hasn’t shown a ton of power, but things could change against Roberto Hernandez as he has 2 HR’s in 8 career AB’s against Hernandez.

  • Value Pick – Jon Jay– Seattle Mariners

Jon Jay has a lifetime .444 (12-27) average with 3 HR and 7 RBI’s against Johnny Cueto. Jay might not have great power, but has a lifetime .295 average and can hit the ball to all parts of the field. In their opening game of the season this year, Jay was able to go 1 for 3 against Cueto and if St. Louis can get some baserunners on before Jay, he could have a nice game here.

  • Value Pick – Angel Pagan – Los Angeles Angels

Angel Pagan is hitting .375 in his last 7 games and .538 at AT&T Park on the young season. Pagan has a favorable match-up against Josh Collmenter in which he has a lifetime average of .583 against Collmenter with 2 RBI’s.
