Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – Saturday, April 18th 2015

  • High Cost – Jacob DeGrom – New York Mets

DeGrom is probably not what you would consider to be “high cost” but he won’t be the cheapest option to pick from on Saturday. DeGrom has dominated the current Marlins roster as Miami is batting just .191 (13-68) with 23 K’s in 68 total AB’s against DeGrom. DeGrom has a good chance to pick up a win as the Mets offensive is facing a struggling Mat Latos and along with the fact that DeGrom had a 9.2 K/9 in 2014, makes him a strong play today.

  • Value Pick – Danny Salazar – Cleveland Indians

Danny Salazar is the ultimate boom or bust fantasy pitcher as although he has the stuff to dominate games and pile up K’s he also can be very inconsistent and at time have no control over any of his pitches. Salazar’s career numbers against Minnesota aren’t fantastic as the current Twins lineup is hitting .319 against Salazar, however, between the career 9.8 K/9 ratio and the fact he looked quite impressive in his only Triple-A start of the season makes Salazar a solid high value pick for Saturday.

  • High Cost – Victor Martinez

At first glance, I looked away from the Detroit offensive knowing that they are going against one of the best pitchers in the AL in Chris Sale, however, Martinez’s success is hard to ignore. Martinez is hitting an absurd .517 (15-29) with 3 HR’s and 6 RBI’s against Sale. Martinez has been out since 4/14, but all signs are that he is going to return this Saturday. If you roll with Martinez keep a close eye on his status but he could have a nice day against the White Sox.

  • Value Pick – Yadier Molina – St. Louis Cardinals

Yadier Molina isn’t hitting at the same pace he was in 2012 & 2013, however, he still has a decent bat and has had some good success against Homer Bailey over this career.  Molina has a career .333 (11-33) average against Bailey with 3 HR’s and 4 RBI’s.  St. Louis as a team is currently hitting .360 (72-200) against Bailey which could lead for Yadier to have some great opportunities for some RBI’s in this one.

First Base

  • High Cost –Edwin Encarnacion – Toronto Blue Jays

Edwin Encarnacion is in the middle of a 0-14 slump going into Friday’s night matchup against the Braves and although he doesn’t have any career AB’s against Alex Wood, I think having the chance to face a lefty in this match-up will help Encarnacion get out of his funk. Encarnacion is hitting .281 against lefties over the past three years and .400 (only 2-5) so far in 2015. Wood relies on his fastball/change-up for his success however, if he leaves anything inside on Encarnacion I expect Encarnacion to take him deep.

  • Value Pick – Freddie Freeman – Atlanta Braves

Freeman will be facing R.A. Dickey on Saturday and in his lifetime has hit .476 with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s off the veteran knuckleballer. Freeman has struggled throughout the season as he is currently hitting just .229, however, he is hitting .280 against righties and has career .285 average.  R.A. Dickey has struggled against the Braves and the current Braves line-up is hitting .304 against Dickey.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Jose Altuve

Jose Altuve had a season to remember in 2014 as he led the AL in hits, average, and SB and although his numbers aren’t as eye popping in 2015 as of yet, he still is hitting a respectable .286 on the season and .357 in his last 7 games. Altuve has had good success of C.J. Wilson in his career hitting .308 with 2 HR off Wilson.

  • Value Pick – Devon Travis

It won’t be too much longer that you’ll be able to pick up Devon Travis at a low price as the Blue Jays 2nd basemen has been absolutely raking it as of late. Travis has a 6 game hitting streak and is now hitting .370 in his last 7 games with 2 HR and 9 RBI’s on the season, Travis is hitting .375.

  • High Cost –  Starlin Castro

Castro struggled in the opening game of the series against James Shields, however, I feel like he will have better luck against Tyson Ross. Castro is batting .286 on the season and .333 in the last 7 days with a HR and 2 BB.

  • Value Pick – Jean Segura – Milwaukee Brewers

Jean Segura has had a great start to his 2015 season on the offensive side of the plate as he currently is hitting .323. Segura was really struggling from the plate in the 2nd half of 2013 and all of 2014, however, it seems that he has made some adjustments to his swing and hitting ball like he did in the 1st half of 2013. Segura is batting .600 (3-5) with 2 BB’s and a HR in his career against Worley and could be a good play at a low price on Saturday.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Matt Carpenter – St. Louis Cardinals

Similar to Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter has simply owned Homer Bailey throughout his career to the tune of a .600 (15-25) average. Carpenter has started off 2015 hot as on the season he is currently hitting .364 with a HR and 7 RBI’s. Carpenter has been great against righties hitting .320 (8-25). Carpenter is one of the most patient hitters and the game and when he gets his pitch to hit, he has shown throughout career he can do some damage.

  • Value Pick – David Freese

David Freese is hitting at just a .229 mark early in the year but has hit a couple of home runs over the past week and has had great success against Houston’s Dallas Keuchel. Freese has a lifetime average of .636 (7-11) against Keuchel with 1 HR and 6 RBI’s.  All three of Freese’s HR’s have come against lefties this year and hopefully he can add to that total against Keuchel.

  • High Cost – Carlos Gonzalez  – Colorado Rockies

Gonzalez started the season on fire but has settled down over the last week as he is just hitting .157 with 1 BB. Gonzalez had an injury-plagued season in 2014 and still is getting back to full strength. Gonzalez hit above .300 in 2013 and 2014 and is a much better hitter than he has shown since he has been injured. Gonzalez has had good success against Zack Greinke with a lifetime .353 (6-17) average with 2 HR and 4 RBI’s and is due for a breakout game.

  • High Cost – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles

The Red Sox/Baltimore game is in interesting one as both pitchers are coming off tough outings and although they have the ability to throw a gem, they have an equal chance of getting rocked again in this match-up. Jones is currently riding a 7 game hit streak and although he is only hitting .207 (6-29) against Clay Buchholz, he does have 2 HR’s and 11 RBI’s in those 6 hits. I expect the offensives to get going a bit in the 2nd game of the series and that Jones will be a big part of it.

  • Value Pick – Melky Cabrera – Chicago White Sox

Anibal Sanchez struggled in his last outing against Pittsburgh giving up 5 ER’s on 3 homeruns and as the current White Sox line-up is hitting .322 (49-152) against Sanchez, I think Cabrera could by a nice value pick for Saturday night. Cabrera has a lifetime average of .458 (11-24) against Sanchez and batting in-front of Jose Abreu is a nice aspect of picking Cabrera.

  • Value Pick – David DeJesus – Tampa Bay Rays

David DeJesus is a decent option for the price if you’re looking for a bargain as he is hitting .364 with a home run and 8 RBI’s over the last 7 days and although he has only face Masahiro Tanaka three times, he does have two hits against him. Make sure DeJesus gets the start if you roll with him but as he bats lefty, I expect him to get the start against Tanaka on Saturday.
