Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 4/21

  • High Cost – Collin McHugh – Houston Astros

Collin McHugh (2-0, 1.54 ERA) had a solid outing in his recent victory against Oakland going 5.2 innings giving up 1 ER on 6 hits while striking out 11. McHugh had a career best 9.1 K/9 in 2014 and has struck out 15 batters in 11.2 IP so far in 2015. McHugh is holding the current Seattle lineup to a .174 average and has 30 strikeouts in 86 total AB’s.

  • Value Pick – Brandon Morrow – San Diego Padres

Brandon Morrow has been plagued by injuries over the last couple of years, however, finally being healthy and some new scenery seems to have done Marrow good as he has gotten off to a great start in his 2015 season. Morrow has gone 7.0 innings in both his starts this year and has posted a great 1.29 ERA and 1.07 Whip. Morrow has 12 K’s early on in 2105 and certainly still has the stuff to get the K’s as he always posted solid K/9 numbers throughout his career. Obviously pitching at Colorado has its risks, but if you’re looking to save money at the pitching spot Morrow is who I’m going with on Tuesday.

  • High Cost – Salvador Perez – Kansas City Royals

Salvador Perez has been seeing the ball well as of late as he is hitting .304 with two doubles and three RBI’s over the past week. Perez got two hits in three at-bats against Minnesota’s starter Tommy Milone in their match-up earlier this year, and has a lifetime .429 batting average against Milone.

  • Value Pick – Jarrod Saltalamacchia – Miami Marlins

Jarrod Saltalamacchia has had an awful beginning to 2015 and is currently in the midst of a 0-11 slump. Saltalamacchia is a patient hitter that can draw walks and although his power is on the decline, he still does have enough pop in the bat to take the ball yard occasionally. Saltalamacchia is a lifetime 2-2 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s against Philadelphia’s starter, Jerome Williams so this could be a good game for Salty to get out of his slump.

First Base

  • High Cost – Paul Goldschmidt  – Arizona Diamondbacks

Paul Goldschmidt does just about everything well on a baseball diamond and currently has 3 HR’s to go along with a .296 average with 5 walks over his last 7 games. Goldschmidt hasn’t faced Nick Martinez, but Martinez does have the tendency to give up the long ball and as Goldschmidt is hitting .314 with 2 HR’s and 9 BB’s against righties in 2015.

  • Value Pick – Joe Mauer  – Minnesota Twins

Joe Mauer has hit safely in 7 of his last 8 games and although he is only hitting .250 over his past 7 games, and has hit .400 against Jason Vargas in his career with 8 RBI’s. The Twins as a team have had success against Vargas as they are hitting .264 against the lefty. Vargas gave up 10 hits over just 3.0 innings against Minnesota earlier this season and I expect the Twins bats to have success again.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Howie Kendrick  – Los Angeles Dodgers

Howie Kendrick has been absolutely great in his first season with the Dodgers so far as he is hitting .370 on the season and .455 in his past 7 games. Kendrick is 6-12 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI’s over his past three games, and although he hasn’t faced Tim Lincecum in his career as of yet, Lincecum really struggled against the Dodgers last year and I feel that Kendrick will have plenty of chances to drive in some runs in this one.

  • Value Pick – Danny Espinosa  – Washington Nationals

Danny Espinosa is hitting just .238 on the young season however, if you are looking for a second basemen that won’t break the bank, Espinosa is worth the look as he has hit 2 HR over the past week and is 3-8 lifetime with 2 Homerun’s against St. Louis starter Lance Lynn over his career.

  • High Cost –  Ian Desmond – Washington Nationals

Staying in Washington, I’m going with Ian Desmond has my “high cost” shortstop on Tuesday as he is hitting .448 over his past 7 games with a homerun and 5 RBI’s. Desmond is .333 (3-9) against Lance Lynn with 1 double and 2 RBI’s in his career. Desmond is hitting .366 against right handed pitchers this season.

  • Value Pick – Jody Mercer – Pittsburgh Pirates

Jody Mercer is only hitting .200 on the season and .118 over the past week, but he has had great success against Cubs starter Travis Wood over his career, as he is hitting .455 with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI’s in his lifetime against Wood. Wood has struggled against the Pirates current lineup, allowing the Pirates to hit .281 against him and if you need a very low cost option at Short, Mercer is a solid pick for Tuesday.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Josh Donaldson - Toronto Blue Jays

For those have followed me over the past week, you’ve known I’ve gone with Donaldson twice and both times he has paid dividends if you’re willing to spend the money for him. Donaldson has hit 3 HR’s in his last three games and has hit .379 over the past week. Donaldson is only 2-8 against Bud Norris in his lifetime but he does have 3 RBI’s against Norris but with the protection of Bastia and Encarnacion behind him, Donaldson will be seeing some great pitches to hit all season.

  • Value Pick – Aramis Ramirez – Milwaukee Brewers

Aramis Ramirez is certainly far past his prime in his MLB career, but he is also facing Jason Marquis who I still can’t believe found a spot in a starting rotation this season. Ramirez still has some pop left in his bat to get you a HR and with a lifetime .370 average with 2 HR’s and 9 RBI’s against Marquis, Ramirez is a solid option for a small price on Tuesday night.

  • High Cost – Adam Jones – Baltimore Orioles

I was at Fenway Park this past Sunday and watched Adam Jones absolutely crush a Home Run over the Green Monster en route to a 4-5 day at the plate with 5 RBI’s and with Jones hitting .520 over his last 7 games, Jones is a safe pick if you want to spend some money on an outfielder on Tuesday. Jones is also facing veteran Mark Buehrle, in which he has a lifetime .412 average with 2 HR’ and 7 RBI’s.

  • High Cost – Ryan Braun – Milwaukee Brewers

Similar to Aramis Ramirez, Ryan Braun has absolutely owned Jason Marquis throughout his career, as Braun has a lifetime .520 (13-25) average with a homerun and 6 RBI’s against Marquis. Milwaukee has really struggled on offensive this year, however, I really like the Brewers and some of their stars to have a big day against Marquis on Tuesday.

  • Value Pick – Torii Hunter  – Minnesota Twins

The longtime veteran has swing the bat well as of late, hitting .316 with a homerun and 5 RBI’s over his past 7 games. Over the past three years, Hunter has hit .315 with 16 HR’s against left-handed pitchers and has fared well against Jason Vargas as he has a career .333 (15-45) average with 6 doubles and 4 RBI’s against the lefty.

  • Value Pick – Delmon Young– Baltimore Orioles

I was looking at a few different picks for this spot tonight but I ended up with Young just for the fact that he has the potential to be able to hit a few out of ball park on any given night. Young is only hitting .263 on the season but has hit .400 over his last 7 games. Young has done well against Buehrle in his career as he has a lifetime .396 (21-53) average with 4 home runs and 9 RBI’s against the lefty.
