Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/4

USA TODAY Sports

Pitchers

  • High Cost – Felix Hernandez  – Seattle Mariners

Felix Hernandez is off to another incredible season as he has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.82 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and has struck out 36 batters in 34.2 IP. Hernandez has posted a 9.5 K/9 over the past two seasons and was able to strike out 10 in his first matchup against the Los Angeles Angels in early April. Hernandez is holding the current Angels lineup to a .178 (48-270) average and I expect Hernandez to continue to have success against the Angels, as they have just a .229 team average so far in 2015. Hernandez owned the Angeles in 2014 as in 5 games started he posted a 3-0 record with a 0.79 ERA while striking out 47 batters in just 34.0 IP.

  • Value Pick – Carlos Martinez – St. Louis Cardinals

In a day in which there will be a lot of “high cost” options at pitching, I think Carlos Martinez could be a great value pick on Monday. Martinez at times as unhittable stuff as he has a dominant moving fastball and decent slider and in 2015 has done a great job as a member of the starting rotation as he has posted a 3-0 record with a 1.73 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and has struck out 24 batters in 26.0 IP. Martinez has a tough matchup a decent Chicago Cubs lineup, however he has held the current cubs lineup to a .174 average. The Cubs are ranked 29th in MLB in strikeouts with 212 so if Martinez has his stuff going, he could certainly go 6 or 7 innings while collecting 8-10 strikeouts.

Catchers

  • High Cost – Nick Hundley  – Colorado Rockies

Nick Hundley has had a great year so far with the Colorado Rockies as he is currently hitting .328 with a homerun in 2015. Hundley does have homerun power and is hitting .385 over the past week. Hundley will be facing off against Josh Collmenter of the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he has posted a career .429 average with a double, homerun, and 3 RBI’s. Hundley is currently riding a 9 game hitting streak and is hitting .333 at Coors Field on the season.

  • Value Pick – Yadier Molina – St. Louis Cardinals

Yadier Molina offensive is certainly not at the level it was just a few years ago, however, at age 32 he still has something left in his bat and is better than the .231 average he has displayed so far in 2015. Molina is a decent value pick at a low price on Monday as he has done well against Travis Wood of the Chicago Cubs as Molina has posted a career .395 (15-38) average with 4 doubles, 3 homeruns and 13 RBI’s. Over the past three seasons, Molina has hit .320 off left-handed pitching and as the Cardinals roster has hit .338 off Travis Wood as a team, Molina could have a good opportunity to have some at bats with some runners on base.

First Base

  • High Cost – Adrian Gonzalez – Los Angeles Dodgers

I’ve gone with Adrian Gonzalez a lot over the past week as my “high cost” player and will have to roll the dice again with the veteran first baseman as he has fared well of the Brewers Kyle Lohse. Gonzalez has posted a lifetime .385 average with 5 doubles, 2 homeruns, and 4 RBI’s off the Brewers Loshe and is hitting .378 (with all 8 off his HR’s) off right-handed pitching in 2015. Gonzalez has had success against the Milwaukee as in 2014 he posted a .500 (10-20) average with 2 homeruns against the Brewers.

  • Value Pick – Brandon Belt  – San Francisco Giants

Brandon Belt is only hitting .217 on the season for the Giants for 2015, but as he has had success against Tyson Ross of the San Diego Padres and his price tag is quite low, I think he is a good value pick on Monday. Belt has posted a career .357 (5-14) average with 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s against Ross and has posted a .283 average against right-handed pitching over the past three seasons.  Brandon Belt hit 3 homeruns against the Padres in 2014 and I’m hoping that he can collect his first homerun of 2015 on Monday.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins

Brian Dozier is only hitting .240 on the season but has started to turn things around a bit as he has collected a hit in 5 of his last 6 games including a four hit night on Sunday against the White Sox. Dozier will be facing off against Jesse Hahn of the Oakland Athletics in which he is 2 for 2 off lifetime with 2 doubles. Dozier is not the biggest second baseman out there but does have some impressive power as he hit 23 homeruns in 2014. Dozier is a patient hitter who will work counts to get a pitch he can unload on and is worth the money right now as he seems to be seeing the ball well at the moment.

  • Value Pick – Danny Espinosa – Washington Nationals

Danny Espinosa is having a solid season at second base for the Nationals and is hitting .409 over the past week. Espinosa has collected a hit in 5 of his last 6 games and has hit both of his homeruns off right-handed pitching in 2015. Espinosa doesn’t have a great history against right-handed pitching but there is much with low-cost options on Monday night and hope that Espinosa can collect me a couple base hits on Monday at a low price.

Shortstop

  • High Cost –  Troy Tulowitzki   – Colorado Rockies

Troy Tulowitzki is hitting .299 on the season and .300 over the last week and he is going to be my “high cost” shortstop this Monday as he kicks off a 6 game home stand against the Diamondbacks. Tulowitzki will be facing Josh Collmenter in which he has posted a career .300 average with a homerun and 4 RBI’s against. Tulowitzki has hit .354 at home over the past three seasons and I just have a feeling this will be a home stand in which he goes off.

  • Value Pick – Yunel Escobar  – Washington Nationals

Yunel Escobar is hitting a subpar .271 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s in 2015 but has had some success against Miami’s David Phelps posting a career .364 average. Escobar is hitting a solid .292 against right-handed pitching and hit .400 against Miami in their matchup earlier this season. Escobar has a bit of power in his bat as has hit about 10 homeruns in each of the last three seasons and it will be only a matter of time in which the Nationals offense finds his legs.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Josh Donaldson – Toronto Blue Jays

Josh Donaldson doesn’t have any experience against Chase Whitley  of the New York Yankees, but I’m I think he is the best “high cost” option on Monday with Matt Carpenter questionable after leaving Sunday’s game early. Donaldson is hitting .307 on the season with 6 homeruns and 18 RBI’s and should continue to have a big season with having some strong protection with Bautista and Encarnacion batting behind him. Donaldson is hitting a solid .298 against right-handed pitching in 2015 and is hitting .415 with 4 homeruns at home on the season.

  • Value Pick – Brett Lawrie – Oakland Athletics

I’m going to go with a former Blue Jay in the Athletics Brett Lawrie as my value pick on Monday. Lawrie is facing off against Minnesota’s Phil Hughes in which he has posted a career .280 average with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Lawrie is only hitting .250 on the season, however is hitting .318 over the past week and has collected a hit in 7 straight games. Lawrie is an incredible offensive talent that has been hampered by injuries throughout his career and with his strength, always has the potential to hit a home run. Lowrie is hitting .271 against right-handed pitching in 2015 and has 2 homeruns and 13 RBI’s.

Outfield

  • High Cost – Matt Holliday – St. Louis Cardinals

Matt Holliday hasn’t come through for me so far when I’ve picked this year, however, I’m going to roll with the veteran outfielder once against as he has a favorable matchup against Travis Wood of the Chicago Cubs. Holliday has posted a career .375 average with 4 homeruns and 9 RBI’s against Wood and is hitting .321 so far in 2015. Holliday is hitting .429 against left-handed pitching in 2015 and even though he went 0-4 on Sunday, he is still hitting .300 over the past week.

  • High Cost – Jacoby Ellsbury – New York Yankees

Jacoby Ellsbury is having a great start to the 2015 season as he is hitting .330 and has already collected 9 SB’s on the young season. Ellsbury will be going up against a familiar foe in Toronto’s R.A. Dickey as he has posted a career .375 average against the knuckleballer. Ellsbury is hitting .286 against right-handed pitching on 2015 and although he really hasn’t had many opportunities to drive in some runs I think he is a good pick on Monday as if he can get on base, he should be able to collect a few steals off R.A. Dickey.

  • Value Pick – David DeJesus  – Tampa Bay Rays

David DeJesus has really struggled as of late going 0 for his last 16 with just one walk, however, he does have a good matchup against Boston’s Clay Buchholz this Monday night. DeJesus has posted a career .353 average with 4 BB’s against the Boston right-hander and has hit a solid .286 with a homerun at Fenway Park over his past three seasons. Buchholz pitched well at Tampa Bay a little bit more of a week ago, but has also struggled in 2015 and I think Tampa could do some damage against him on Monday.

  • Value Pick – Chris Carter  – Houston Astros

Chris Carter is the ultimate boom/bust pick in daily fantasy baseball as the guy generally is homerun or bust. Carter is only hitting .159 on the season and .174 over his past 7 games, however, has collected 2 homeruns over his past 5 games including a two run shot on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners. Carter has averaged a homerun about every 15 at-bats against left-handed pitching over the past three seasons and as he faces a left-handed pitcher in the Rangers Ross Detwiler who has given up 6 homeruns in his last three starts, I’m going with Carter as a great value pick on Monday.
