Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/5

USA TODAY Sports

Pitchers

  • High Cost – Andrew Cashner  – San Diego Padres

I’m going to go with Andrew Cashner as my “high cost” pitcher for Tuesday as Cashner has pitched great in 2015 despite the 1-4 record. On the season, Cashner has posted a 2.61 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and has struck out 36 batters in 31.0 IP. Casher does have a history of injury problems however, when healthy, he has one of the better put away pitches in baseball with sinkerball that can hit above 95 mph on the radar gun. Cashner has gone at least 6.0 innings in his last 4 starts and has only given up a combined 4 runs in those starts. Cashner has a decent matchup against San Francisco on Tuesday as the Giants rank 28th in MLB in runs scored with just 79.

  • Value Pick – Danny Salazar – Cleveland Indians

Danny Salazar has looked more like that pitcher that showed so much promise in 2013 than the one that really struggled at beginning of 2014 as he has posted a 3-0 record in 3 starts while posting a 3.32 ERA and striking out 28 batters in 19.0 IP. Salazar might not have a great matchup against the Kansas Royals who lead the MLB in the least amount of strikeouts, however Salazar was able to notch 7 K’s against the Royals in his recent 4/29 start. Salazar has some of the best stuff in the Indians rotation and is always a decent value pick with his 9.8 K/9 ratio to get a win and a good amount of strikeouts.

Catchers

  • High Cost – Brian McCann  – New York Yankees

Brian McCann is hitting just .247 on the season however veteran catcher did post a .286 average with 3 doubles, a homerun and 7 RBIs over the past week. McCann will be facing Macro Estrada who was just promoted to the starting rotation of the Blue Jays. McCann has posted a career .4455 (5-11) average against the right-hander is hitting .290 during night games so far in 2015. McCann did well against the Bluejays in 2014 as he hit 4 HR’s and drove in 13 RBI’s in 65 AB’s against Toronto.

  • Value Pick - Blake Swihart – Boston Red Sox

I’m going to go with the Red Sox’s Blake Swihart as my “value pick” today as I feel that this will be only time of the season in which we’ll be get the talented Red Sox prospect at this low of a price. Swihart has been listed as one of the top-10 prospects by most publications and many believe he has a major league ready bat. The talented catcher will be getting the start behind the plate for the foreseeable future and it won’t be long until he starts hitting some baseball off and over the Green Monster. I’m going to take my chances on Monday that Blake has a big game against the left-handed Drew Smyly.

First Base

  • High Cost – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks

Paul Goldschmidt has been on fire as of late as over past the week, the first basemen has posted a .556 average (15-27) with a 4 doubles, a homerun and 6 RBI’s. During Goldschmidt’s recent hot-steak he has collect at least 3 hits in 4 of his last 6 games and has raised his season average to .356. Goldschmidt will be facing off against Jordan Lyles of the Colorado Rockies in which he has posted a career .455 average. Over the past three seasons, Goldschmidt has hit .316 against the Colorado Rockies and has a .307 average with 2 homeruns at Coors Field.

  • Value Pick – Eric Hosmer  – Kansas City Royals

I’m going to go with Eric Hosmer of Kansas City Royals as he first basemen is batting .313 on the season and has hit .345 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s over the past week. Hosmer will be going up against Danny Salazar of the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday in which he has posted a career .500 (6-12) average with 3 doubles, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s. Hosmer is hitting .375 against right-handed pitching and hit .309 against the Cleveland Indians in 2014.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Devon Travis – Toronto Blue Jays

I’m going with Devon Travis of the Toronto Blue Jays as the Blue Jays second basemen has posted a solid .318 average with 7 homeruns and 23 RBI’s so far in 2015. Travis isn’t projected to put up huge homerun totals but does have some decent power as he has displayed so far in 2015. Travis will be going against Michael Pineda of the New York Yankees in which he is 2 for 2 lifetime against with an RBI. Travis is hitting an incredible .438 with three of his homeruns at the Rodgers center this season.

  • Value Pick – Howie Kendrick  – Los Angeles Dodgers

Howie Kendrick might not be the cheapest option on Tuesday, however, he also won’t be the most expensive option on Tuesday and has extreme value with his history against Matt Garza of the Milwaukee Brewers. Kendrick is hitting a solid .292 on the season and has posted a career .583 average with a homerun and 2 RBI’s against Garza. Kendrick is actually hitting better against right-hand pitching on the season as he has posted a .303 average with three homeruns.

Shortstop

  • High Cost –  Troy Tulowitzki  – Colorado Rockies

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m going to be taking Troy Tulowitzki the majority of this week at my “high cost” shortstop as I like the matchups he at Coors field this week. Tulowitzki is hitting .299 on the season and just .276 at Coors Field on the season, but has a favorable matchup against the left-handed Robbie Ray who will be making his first appearance in 2015 after posted a 8.16 ERA over 28.2 IP with the Tigers in 2014. Over the past three seasons Tulowitzki has hit .313 against left-handed pitching and .354 at Coors field and as I mentioned yesterday, I feel that he is due for a dominant home stand.

  • Value Pick – Elvis Andrus  – Texas Rangers

Elvis Andrus could be a nice play for a cheap price on Tuesday night as although Andrus is hitting just .224 on the season, he is hitting .273 over the past week with 2 doubles and 4 walks. Andrus will be facing off against Scott Feldman of the Houston Astros in which he has posted a career .318 average with a couple of doubles and 2 RBI’s. Over the past three seasons Andrus has posted a .281 average with three triples and 19 RBI’s. Andrus does have some speed in his legs and can be steal a base or two if he can get on base.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Nolan Arenado  – Colorado Rockies

I’m taking Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies this Tuesday for many of the same reasons why I’m taking Troy Tulowitzki. Arenado is hitting .314 on the season with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI’s and is also hitting .310 at home at Coors Field. Arenado will face left-handed Robbie Ray of the Diamondbacks on Tuesday who is making his first appearance of the season and gave up 5 homeruns in just 28.2 IP in 2014. Over the past three seasons, Arenado has hit .300 with 21 homeruns at Coors Field and I can certainly see Arenado and the Rockies having big days on Tuesday.

  • Value Pick – Yangervis Solarte

Yangervis Solarte has earned his starting spot wherever the Padres place him as he has started off 2015 hitting .304 with 2 homeruns and 17 RBI’s. Solarte is hitting .348 (8-23) with 8 RBI’s over the past week and has posted a career .600 (3-5) average against Ryan Vogelsong of the San Francisco Giants. Solarte has been excellent against right-handed pitching on the season as he is hitting .365. Solarte went 3 for 10 with an RBI in San Diego’s earlier series against the Giants this year.

Outfield

  • High Cost – Giancarlo Stanton – Miami Marlins

Giancarlo Stanton is hitting just .266 on the season but has displayed the power we all know he had as Stanton has hit 6 homeruns and collected 24 RBI’s so far in 2015. Stanton has a nice matchup against Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals as he has posted a career .400 average with 6 doubles, 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s. Stanton has actually hit better against right-handed pitching as he has posted a .278 average. With Stanton’s ability to take it yard on any pitch, he is always a solid option in your lineups.

  • High Cost – Billy Hamilton  – Cincinnati Reds

Billy Hamilton is not having a great season at the plate as he is only hitting .204, but if he gets on base, he can be a game changer with his blazing speed. Hamilton has a decent matchup on Tuesday as he goes against Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates in which Hamilton has posted a career .571 average with a double. Hamilton has 13 SB’s on the season which is impressive concerning the .204 average. Hamilton is hitting .333 against the pirates on the season and I think he could get us some SB’s tomorrow night if he can get on base.

  • Value Pick – Melky Cabrera  – Atlanta Braves

Melky Cabrera is hitting .287 on the season and .350 over the past week. Cabrera has a favorable matchup against Shane Greene of the Detroit Tigers as he has posted a career .500 average with a double against the righty. Cabrera has done the majority of his damage this year against right-handed pitching as he is hitting .371 against righties and just .080 (2-25) against lefties. Cabrera has a great series against the Tigers earlier this season as he hit .462 (6-13) with 2 RBI’s.

  • Value Pick – Mark Trumbo  – Arizona Diamondbacks

Mark Trumbo has had a good season with the Diamondback in 2015 as he has posted a .286 average with 4 doubles, 3 triples, 2 homeruns and 11 RBI’s. Trumbo has a great matchup on Tuesday as he faces Jordan Lyles of the Colorado Rockies in which he has posted a career .333 average with 3 home runs and 8 RBI’s. Trumbo is hitting .333 over the past week and has hit .294 with 7 homeruns and 17 RBI’s at Coors Field over the past three seasons.
