Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/6

USA TODAY Sports

Pitchers

  • High Cost – Gerrit Cole  – Pittsburgh Pirates

Gerrit Cole has been dominant so far in 2015 as he has posted a 4-0 record with a 1.76 ERA, 0.98 WHIP while recording 35 strikeouts in 30.2 IP. Cole has posted at least 6 strikeouts in each of his five starts in 2015 and has gone at least 6.0 innings in his last 4. Cole has a great fastball and slider that can be unhittable at times and posted a strong 9.0 K/9 in 2014. Cole has a favorable matchup on Wednesday as he is facing a Cincinnati Reds team that ranks 28th in MLB with a .226 average.

  • Value Pick – Alex Colome – Tampa Bay Rays

I’m going to go with Alex Colome as a value pick on Wednesday as although he is facing a Red Sox offensive lineup that’s powerful on paper, they’ve really struggled against right-handed pitching as of late. Colome was good in his first start of the season against the Baltimore Orioles going 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on 3 hits while striking out 6. Colome has always had control problems but he looked great in his first start as he didn’t walk one Oriole batter. Colome has four quality pitches in his arsenal and did post a 7.6 K/9 in 15 starts in Triple-AAA in 2014.

Catchers

  • High Cost – Victor Martinez  – Detroit Tigers

Victor Martinez has a tough match up against Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox this Wednesday however, has had such good success against the lefty, I have to take him as my “high cost” pick on Wednesday. Martinez has posted a career .469 (15-32) average with 3 doubles, 3 homeruns and 6 RBI’s off Sale. Martinez has really struggled in 2015 as he has posted just a .208 average however, I expect Martinez to rebound from his poor April as over the past three seasons he has posted a .317 average. Martinez has had success batting from the right side of the plate as he is hitting .421 (8-19) on the season.

  • Value Pick – Brian McCann – New York Yankees

Brian McCann is only hitting .250 on the season however, he does have 2 homeruns and 15 RBI’s as he continues to bat in the heart of the Yankee lineup. McCann has a favorable matchup on Wednesday as he has posted a career average of .407 with 3 doubles, a homerun and 4 RBI’s off Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays. McCann is hitting better against left-handed pitching on the season as he is hitting .273.

First Base

  • High Cost – Freddie Freeman – Atlanta Braves

I might be one day too late on Freeman as he has had a monster game on Tuesday going 3-4 with a walk, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s. Freeman is hitting .301 on the season and .357 over the past week. Freeman has a nice matchup on Wednesday as he is facing Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies in which he has posted a career .500 (3-6) average with 3 doubles and 1 RBI. Freeman has been solid against right-handed pitching all season as he is hitting .297 with 3 homeruns and 9 RBI’s.

  • Value Pick – Carlos Santana  – Cleveland Indians

Although Carlos Santana isn’t valued that much lower than Freeman, he still is a good value play as he faces off against Danny Duffy of the Kansas City Royals in which he has posted a .368 (7-19) average with a triple, a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Santana is only hitting .244 on the season but is hitting better as a right handed batter as he has posted a .286 average. Santana has done well against Kansas City over the past three years as he has hit .332 and hit more homeruns (13) and driven in more RBI’s (42) against the Royals than any other team he has faced.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Jose Altuve – Houston Astros

If you’ve been following baseball at all, you’ve know how well the Astros and Jose Altuve have performed over the past two weeks. Altuve is hitting .351 on the season with 3 homeruns and 19 RBI’s. Altuve had his 11 game hit streak snapped on Sunday but is still hitting .464 with a homerun and 7 RBI’s over the past week. Altuve will be facing off against Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers on Wednesday in which he has posted a .357 career average.

  • Value Pick – Stephen Drew  - New York Yankees

Stephen Drew was in the midst of a 0-17 slump but broke out of it on Tuesday night going 2-4. Drew has great value on Wednesday night as he will be one of the cheaper options at 2B and he has done quite well against Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays as he has posted a career .421 (8-19) average with 2 doubles, a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Drew has actually done decent against left-handed pitching in 2015 as he is hitting .294 (compared to his overall .149 average) and has 3 homeruns and 9 RBI’s over his past three seasons at the Rogers Centre.

Shortstop

  • High Cost –  Starlin Castro  – Chicago Cubs

If the Rockies and Diamondbacks ever got to play a game at Coors field, I would probably be going with Troy Tulowitzki, but to switch it up on Wednesday, I’m going to go with Starlin Castro of the Chicago Cubs. Castro will be going against Lance Lynn of the St. Louis Cardinals in which he has posted a career .333 average with 3 doubles, a triple and 4 RBI’s. Castro is hitting .294 with 2 homeruns and 15 RBI’s and has done better away from Wrigley Field as he has posted a .326 average away from home. Over the past three seasons, Castro is hitting .310 with 8 doubles and 2 homeruns at Busch Stadium.

  • Value Pick – Jordy Mercer  – Pittsburgh Pirates

I’m going to pick Jordy Mercer as my “value pick” on Wednesday as although the Pirates shortstop is just hitting .190 on the season he has collected a hit in 4 of his last 5 games and has had some success of Mark Leake of the Cincinnati Reds as he has posted a career .357 (5-14) average. Mercer hasn’t seen a lot of left-hand pitching on the season (just 10 AB’s) but over the past three seasons he has hit .340 (71-209) against left-handed pitching. Mercer does have a little pop in his bat as he did hit 12 homeruns in 2014 and at very cheap price in daily fantasy leagues, is a good choice on Wednesday if you’re trying to save some money at this position.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Nolan Arenado  – Colorado Rockies (Game 2 of Double Header)

I’m sticking with Nolan Arenado in his match up against Robbie Ray as this matchup just seems to go to past up. The Rockies will be playing a double header on Wednesday so ensure that you take Arenado in the second game in which he is up against Ray. Here is my write-up for Arenado from yesterday:

“I’m taking Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies this Tuesday for many of the same reasons why I’m taking Troy Tulowitzki. Arenado is hitting .314 on the season with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI’s and is also hitting .310 at home at Coors Field. Arenado will face left-handed Robbie Ray of the Diamondbacks on Tuesday who is making his first appearance of the season and gave up 5 homeruns in just 28.2 IP in 2014. Over the past three seasons, Arenado has hit .300 with 21 homeruns at Coors Field and I can certainly see Arenado and the Rockies having big days on Tuesday. “

  • Value Pick – Trevor Plouffe – Minnesota Twins

Trevor Plouffe has had a great start to his 2015 season as although he is hitting just .271 he has hit an impressive 5 homeruns while driving in 15 RBI’s. Plouffe will be going against Scott Kazmir of the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday and has posted a career .368 (7-19) average with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. Plouffe has been on fire over the past week as he has a .370 average with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s. Plouffe has done well at home this season as he is hitting .333 and has collected all five of his homeruns at Target Field.

Outfield

  • High Cost – Carlos Gonzalez – Colorado Rockies (Game 1 of Double-Header)

Carlos Gonzalez has battled injuries throughout 2014 and although he seems to finally have a full bill of health, he had really struggled in 2015 as he is hitting just .200. Gonzalez is too good of a player to continue to be hitting just .200 on the season as he has a career .291 average and averaged 27 homeruns between 2010 through 2014. Gonzalez will be going against Josh Collmenter of the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he has posted a career .333 (5-15) average with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI’s. Over the past three seasons Gonzalez has hit 5 homeruns and driven in 16 RBI’s against the Diamondbacks.

  • High Cost – Nelson Cruz  – Seattle Mariners

If anyone though Nelson Cruz’s 2014 season with Baltimore was a fluke, they sure were incorrect at the powerful right hander is currently hitting .337 with a MLB leading 14 homeruns and 26 RBI’s. Cruz will be going up against C.J. Wilson of the Los Angeles Angels in which he has posted a career .385 average (5-13) with a double, a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Cruz is hitting .429 with 5 homeruns over the past week and has hit .400 away from Safeco Field this season. Cruz has also batted an incredible .556 (10-18) with 4 BB’s and 5 Homeruns against left-handed pitching in 2015.

  • Value Pick – Kelly Johnson  – Atlanta Braves

Similar to Freddie Freeman, I’m hoping I’m not a day late on Kelly Johnson as the outfielder had a big Tuesday night going 2-3 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Looking at the matchups this morning, I think Johnson will be solid value pick on Wednesday as he has posted a career .391 (9-23) average with 4 BB’s and 2 RBI’s against Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies. Kelly Johnson is hitting just .266 on the season but has belted 6 homeruns and driven in 17 RBI’s. Johnson has collected at least one base hit in 4 of his last 5 games.

  • Value Pick – Colby Rasmus  – Houston Astros

Colby Rasmus is only hitting .257 so far in 2015 but has hit 5 homeruns and driven in 10 RBI’s. Rasmus sat on Tuesday night as the Astros were facing a left-hander, but should be in the starting line-up on Wednesday as he faces right hander Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers in which he has posted a career .444 (4-9) average with a triple, a homerun and 2 RBI’s. All five of Rasmus homeruns have come against right-handed pitching in 2015 and he has hit .364 (4-11) against the Texas Rangers in 2015.
