Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/7

  • High Cost – Chris Archer  – Tampa Bay Rays

I’ve been a big supporter of Jake Arrieta so far this season, however, I have to go with Tampa’s Chris Archer this Thursday as the right-hander has been absolutely dominant in 2015. When you look past the 3-3 record, Archer has posted a 1.64 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and has struck out 42 batters in 38.1 IP. Archer struggled a bit in his recent start as he didn’t have great control against the Orioles, however, he had four consecutive scoreless starts prior to his last start. Archer will be going against the Texas Rangers on Thursday in which he has held the current roster to a .224 roster and has struck out 20 batters in just 49 AB’s.  Archer should be worth the money on Thursday.

  • Value Pick – Anthony DeSclafani – Cincinnati Reds

Similar to Archer, DeSclafani is having a great season with the Reds, however, had his worst outing of the season in his last start going just 5.0 IP giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks. Despite the trouble with control in his last start, DeSclafani has been great as he still has a 2.03 ERA and 0.94 WHIP while striking out 26 batters in 31.0 IP. DeSclafani is holding the current Pirates line up to a .238 average and did pick up a win in his season debut against Pittsburgh. The Pirates are ranked 7th in MLB in most strikeouts and I see DeSclafani going about 6 or 7 innings getting the win and about 6 K’s in this one.

  • High Cost – Victor Martinez  – Detroit Tigers

Victor Martinez  paid off for me yesterday as my “high cost” pick as he went 3 for 4 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s and I’m going to roll with the veteran switch hitter again for Thursday. Martinez is only hitting .217 on the season, however, as a career .305 hitter, I’m confident that Martinez’s average will continue to trend upwards as the season goes on. Martinez will be facing off against Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox this Thursday and Martinez has posted a career .476 (10-21) with 3 RBI’s. Martinez should once again be batting from the right side of the plate which is where he has had all his success in 2015 as he is hitting .409 (9-22).

  • Value Pick – Miguel Montero – Chicago Cubs

Miguel Montero is having a great season for the Cubs in 2015 as he is hitting .298 with 3 homeruns and 13 RBI’s on the season and hitting .455 over the past week. Montero will be facing off against John Lackey of the St. Louis Cardinals which Montero has posted a career .500 average (3-6) with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Montero is hitting .294 against right-handed pitching in 2015 and with the powerful Cubs lineup hitting before him, Montero has a good chance to have some runners on board by the time he steps up to the plate.

First Base

  • High Cost – Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds

Joey Votto is once again tearing up major league pitching as the career .311 hitter is currently hitting .323 with 7 homeruns and 17 RBI’s in 2015. Votto had his five game hitting streak snapped last night as he only got two AB’s due to get ejected for arguing balls and strikes, however, he still is hitting .364 over the past week.  Votto will be up against A.J. Burnett of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday which Votto has posted a career .348 (8-23) average with a homerun and 5 RBI’s. Votto has been excellent against right-handed pitching on the season as all 7 of his homeruns have come against right-handers while hitting .357.

  • Value Pick – Mark Teixeira  – New York Yankees

Teixeira might not be hitting the ball for average so far in 2015 (.209 average), however, he seems have found his power stroke as he has belted 10 homeruns and driven in 23 RBI’s so far on the season. Teixeira will be facing Chris Tillman of the Baltimore Orioles in which he has posted a career .333 (7-21) average against. Tillman has given up 4 HR’s on the young season and with the Yankees back at Yankee Stadium, I’m banking on Teixeira to be able to get one over the short porch in right.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians

I was able to get Kipnis for a few starts at a reasonable price at 2B however, it looks as if his salary is starting to rise a bit which means I’m putting him in as a “high cost” pick this afternoon. Kipnis has raised his season average from .218 to .280 over the past week as he has hit .440 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s over the past seven days. Kipnis has really struggled against left-handed pitching on the season, however he has crushed right-handed pitching to the tune of a .368 average in 2015. Kipnis has never faced Edinson Volquez (right-hander) in his career, but with the way Kipnis is hitting, I’m going to continue to roll with him.

  • Value Pick – Addison Russell  - Chicago Cubs

I’m going to go with the young rookie, Addison Russell as my value pick today as although the second basemen has struck out in almost half of his MLB at-bats, he continues to find ways to get hits when he is making contact with the ball. Russell currently has a 9 game hitting streak and has hit an impressive .364 over the past week. Russell is projected to become a star in this league and can hit for power as he already has collected two homeruns in his young season, both have which have come off right-handed pitching. For the price, Russell is a solid value pick this Thursday.

  • High Cost –  Starlin Castro – Chicago Cubs

There isn’t much at the SS position today when it comes to “high cost” so this is certainly a position in which you can save some money on your rosters for Thursday. If there is a “high cost” SS, it would be Starlin Castro, as Castro has some decent pop in his bat and is hitting .296 with 2 homeruns and 16 RBI’s on the season. Castro doesn’t have much experience against John Lackey of the Cardinals as he is just 1 for 3 lifetime against the right-hander, however, Castro did hit .302 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s last year at Busch Stadium.

  • Value Pick – Jean Segura  – Milwaukee Brewers

Jean Segura will be my “value pick” at the Shortstop position on Thursday as Segura is having a nice start to the 2015 season hitting .282 with a homerun, 11 RBI’s, and 6 SB’s. Segura doesn’t have much experience against Carlos Frias of the Los Angeles Dodgers (0-1 lifetime) but I don’t feel the Frias has the arsenal that Segura shouldn’t be able to handle. Segura is a threat to get some SB’s if he gets on base and is hitting .283 (slugging .396) at Miller Park on the season.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Alex Rodriguez – New York Yankees

I have to go with Alex Rodriguez on Thursday as although the third-basemen is only hitting .231 on the season, he has been able to hit 6 homeruns and drive in 16 RBI’s so far in 2015. Rodriguez has a favorable matchup against Chris Tillman of the Orioles which he has posted a career .500 (5-10) average with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI’s. Rodriguez has fared well against Baltimore in his career, and in his last two seasons he played (2012 & 2013) he hit a respectable .286 against the Orioles.

  • Value Pick – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals

I’m a fan of the slugging third basemen from the Royals as I always like my value picks to be able to put a couple in the cheap seats at any moment. Moustakas is having a solid 2015 season as he is hitting .312 with three homeruns and 10 RBI’s. Moustakas draws a tough matchup on Thursday going against Cleveland’s Corey Kluber, however, Moustakas has fared well against the reigning AL Cy Young Award Winning as he has posted a career .440 (11-25) average with 5 doubles, a homerun and 5 RBI’s. Moustakas is hitting .322 against right-handed pitching this season and with 3 for 4 against Kluber in an earlier matchup this season.

  • High Cost – Yoenis Cespedes – Detroit Tigers

I don’t need to provide you too much info outside of the fact that Cespedes has a lifetime 2.375 (that is not a typo) slugging percentage against the White Sox’s Jose Quintana. In eight career at-bats against Quintana, Cespedes is hitting .750 (6-8) with a double, 4 homeruns, and 9 RBI’s. Get Cespedes in your lineups today at any cost!

  • High Cost – Jacoby Ellsbury  – New York Yankees

I’m going back to the Yankees center fielder once again as he has been on absolute fire as of late collect at least one hit in his last 9 games and while hitting .462 over the past week. In 2015 Ellsbury is hitting .355 and has an incredible .427 OBP which is great when you have the speed that Ellsbury has to steal some bases. Although Ellsbury hasn’t done anything special against Chris Tillman (.226 career) average, I like the Ellsbury today as not only is he seeing the ball well and stealing bases, he is back at Yankee Stadium today which gives him a better shot to get a HR over the short right field wall.

  • Value Pick – Andre Ethier  – Los Angeles Dodgers

Andre Either is having a decent season with the Dodgers in 2015 as he has hit .290 with 4 homeruns and 9 RBI’s so far on the season. Either has a good matchup against Mike Fiers of the Milwaukee Brewers as he has posted a career .750 average (3-4) with a double and RBI’s off the right-hander. Either is hitting .281 against right-handed pitching in 2015 and all 4 of his homeruns have come against righties. Either has fared well against the Brewers as over the past three seasons he is hitting .345 against the Brewers and .360 at Miller Park.

  • Value Pick – Angel Pagan  – San Francisco Giants

Angel Pagan was back in the lineup last night after sitting out Tuesday’s contest with an injured finger so I feel safe going with Pagan as my second “value pick” of the day. Pagan is hitting an impressive .340 on the season and although he doesn’t have any homeruns as of yet, he does have some speed to get a SB if he gets on base. Pagan will be up against Dan Haren of the Marlins on Thursday which he has posted a career .625 (5-8) average with a double, triple, homerun and 2 RBI’s.
