Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/8

Pitchers

  • High Cost – Matt Harvey  – New York Mets

I’m going to go with Matt Harvey today as my “high cost” pitcher. Harvey has rebounded well from missing the entire 2014 season with Tommy John Surgery and in 2015 he has posted a perfect 5-0 record with a 2.41 ERA and 0.92 WHIP while striking out 34 batters in 33.2 IP. Harvey is strikeout pitcher who has a 9.1 K/9 in 2015 and has a favorable matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies who rank dead last in all of MLB in runs scored this season. Harvey has fared well against the current Philadelphia roster as he holding the Phillies to just a .153 average while striking out 24 batters in just 59 AB’s.

  • Value Pick – Miguel Gonzalez – Baltimore Orioles

Miguel Gonzalez has always been an undervalued pitcher and although he had a good start to the 2015 season, he still quite affordable in most of the daily fantasy leagues and is certainly worth a look tonight against the Yankees. Gonzalez has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP while striking out 27 batters in 31.1 IP. Gonzalez was quite impressive in his first matchup of the season against the Yankees in which he got the win while giving just 1 run while striking out 10. The Yankees have been swinging the bat better as of late, however, Gonzalez has done well against the Yankees as he his holding the current roster to a .204 average.

Catchers

  • High Cost – Nick Hundley  – Colorado Rockies

Nick Hundley is tearing it up at the moment and as he has another series at Coors Field, I’m going with Hundley today as he is facing a lefty tonight in Brett Anderson of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hundley is hitting .343 on the season with 2 homeruns and 8 RBI’s and is hitting .500 (5-10) with a homerun and 4 RBI’s over the past week. Hundley enters the contest on a 10 game hitting streak and is hitting .367 at home on the season. Hundley is only a career .242 hitter so I don’t expect the average to stay at its current level, however the veteran catcher does have some nice pop in bat and as well all know, your offensive statistics generally go up the more games you play in Colorado.

  • Value Pick – Derek Norris – San Diego Padres

I’m going to go with Derek Norris as my value pick today because his price compared to what else is available at the catchers position seems be a good value today. Norris is having a great first season with the San Diego Padres as he is hitting .311 with 12 doubles, 2 homeruns and 16 RBI’s. Norris is hitting .304 with a homerun and 5 RBI’s over the past week and has hit .319 with 8 doubles away from PETCO Park this season. Norris will be going up against a right-hander in Jeremy Hellickson today, which is probably why is cost is a bit down as he is only hitting .244 against right-handed pitching but he does have a double in his only game against Hellickson in his career.

First Base

  • High Cost – Edwin Encarnacion – Toronto Blue Jays

I’m going to go with the struggling Edwin Encarnacion as my high cost pick on Friday as the veteran hitter is starting to pick it up as of late and has a favorable matchup against the Red Sox. Encarnacion is only hitting .216 on the season with 4 homeruns and 14 RBI’s, however he has hit .296 over the past week and has collected at least one hit in 8 of his last 9 games. Wade Miley has been absolutely awful for the Red Sox coming into this matchup against the Blue Jays as he is posting a 7.15 ERA and 1.54 WHIP and Encarnacion has been perfect against Miley in his career going 2 for 2 with a double. Encarnacion hit his last homerun on April 21st, so he is long overdue to put one out and I think he has a good shot of this on Friday.

  • Value Pick – Adam LaRoche  – Chicago White Sox

LaRoche is struggling so far in 2015 as he is only hitting .212 (slugging .341) with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s but he has a nice match up on Friday and with his price tag so low, he certainly has some good value. LaRoche will be going up against Jason Marquis of the Cincinnati Reds in which he has posted a career .289 (11-38) average with 3 homeruns and 5 RBI’s against. LaRoche is hitting better (but not that much better) against right-handed pitching but all 3 of his home runs of the season have come against righties. With Marquis on the mound for the Reds, I think the White Sox could have a nice day offensively and as LaRoche has been batting clean-up for the majority of the season, he could play a big part of this on Friday.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Justin Turner – Los Angeles Dodgers

I’m going to go with Justin Turner as my second basemen today as Turner is hitting .320 on the season and has been seeing the ball great as of late hitting .412 with 3 homeruns and 6 RBI’s over the past week. Turner will be up against Eddie Butler of the Colorado Rockies in which he has posted a career .750 (6-8) average with 2 doubles against. Turner is hitting .349 against right-handed pitching in 2015 and over the past three season as hit .432 against the Colorado Rockies. Turner and the Dodgers will in Colorado today in which over the past three seasons, Turner is hitting .476 (10-21) at Coors Field.

  • Value Pick – Aaron Hill  - Arizona Diamondbacks

Aaron Hill will have a tough matchup against San Diego’s James Shields on Friday, but with his price tag being in the $2500 - $2900 range, he is a good value pick. Hill is hitting just .262 on the season but has been tearing the cover off the ball as of late as he is hitting .533 (8-15) with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s over the past week. Hill has some good experience against Shields when they both played in the AL East and has done well against the righty as he has posted a career .286 average with 4 homeruns and 5 RBI’s. Over the past three seasons, Hill has actually fared better against right-hand pitching hitting a respectable .282 mark.

Shortstop

  • High Cost –  Troy Tulowitzki  – Colorado Rockies

All week I’ve been trying to Tulowitzki in my line-up however, it seems that if pick him a storm cloud hovers over Coors Field and the game is postponed. I’m going with Tulowitzki again today as he looked good in the second game of the double header yesterday going 2 for 4 and is currently hitting .298 on the season. Tulowitzki will be going against Brett Anderson of the Los Angeles Dodgers in although he has faced Anderson in his career, he is hitting .500 (7-14) with a homerun and 4 RBI’s this season against left-handed pitching. Over the past three seasons, Tulowitzki is hitting .354 at Coors Field and as he is at home today, I expect a couple more hits off his bat today.

  • Value Pick – Andrelton Simmons  – Atlanta Braves

Andrelton Simmons has collected at least one hit in 6 consecutive games including a great 3-4 performance with a double, homerun, and 3 runs scored against Philadelphia this past Wednesday. During the past week, Simmons is hitting an even .400 which has helped raise his season average to .292 (slugging .462). Simmons will have a difficult matchup against the left-handed Gio Gonzalez, however, Simmons has posted a career .333 average (6-18) with a double, triple, 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s. Simmons is hitting .308 against left-handed pitching in 2015 and is hitting .476 so far in May.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Josh Donaldson – New York Yankees

I’m going with the power hitting Josh Donaldson as my “high cost” third baseman on Friday as Donaldson has had a nice start to his 2015 season hitting .301 (slugging .522) with 6 homeruns and 18 RBI’s. As I mentioned before, Donaldson should be in for a big year as he is as well protected in the batter order than other player in MLB with Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion hitting behind. Donaldson has struggled a bit as of late hitting just .192 over the past week but he is hitting .377 at the Rogers Centre on the season and .389 against left-handed pitching (will be facing a left-handed in Boston’s Wade Miley).

  • Value Pick – Pablo Sandoval – Boston Red Sox

Pablo Sandoval isn’t an expensive option at 3B but he is not the cheapest either, however, he has a great matchup on Friday night which makes value for the price tonight. Sandoval is hitting .300 on the season with 2 homeruns and 12 RBI’s, however has been crushing right-handed pitching to the tune of a .384 average. Sandoval will be going against the right-hander Aaron Sanchez of the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in which in his career he is 2 for 2 against with a homerun and 3 RBI’s. In the first series of the season, Sandoval destroyed Toronto pitching as he hit .545 (6-11) with 2 doubles, a homerun, 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored.

Outfield

  • High Cost – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels

Mike Trout is usually the most expensive outfielder to choose from on a daily basis, however, he is worth the price tag this Friday. Trout is hitting .298 on the season with 8 homeruns and 18 RBI’s and although he is only hitting .214 over the past week, he does have 3 homeruns in that span. Trout will be going against Roberto Hernandez of the Houston Astros this Friday in which he has posted a career .364 average with 3 homeruns and 4 RBI’s. Trout has actually fared better against right-handed pitching so far in 2015 as he has posted a solid .325 average. Trout is always great if you can find a way to afford him in your lineups as not only does he hit for power, he can also steal a base or two to get you come extra fantasy points.

  • High Cost – Joc Petersen  – Los Angeles Dodgers

Joc Petersen has been everything the Dodgers could have hoped for as in his first full season up in the bigs Pederson is hitting .271 with 9 homeruns and 19 RBI’s. Similar to trout, although is hitting just .214 over the past week, he does have an incredible 5 homeruns in that span and has 7 homeruns in his last 9 games he has started. All 9 homeruns have come against right-handed pitching in which he does face a right-hander in Colorado’s Eddie Butler who he is 1 for 2 lifetime with a double against. Friday’s night will be the first time in 2015 Pederson will be playing at Coors field, and with the power stroke he has been displaying as of late, I don’t see any reason why he can hit a couple out in Colorado.

  • Value Pick – Brandon Moss – Cleveland Indians

Brandon Moss is generally a popular value pick has his salary is low and he certainly has the power to hit a home-run or two any night he gets a start. Moss is hitting just .230 on the season but does have 5 homeruns and 21 RBI’s on the season and as he has a favorable matchup against Mike Pelfrey of the Minnesota Twins on Friday, he is a solid value pick tonight. Moss has posted a career .455 (5-11) average with a double and 2 RBI’s off Pelfrey and although Pelfrey has pitched surprisingly well in 2015, I don’t expect Pelfrey and his career 4.51 ERA to be able to keep up the success he had.

  • Value Pick – Peter Bourjos  – St. Louis Cardinals

I expect Peer Bourjos to get another start in center field on Friday night as the Cardinals will be going against another left-handed starter in Francisco Liriano of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bourjos has made the most of his opportunities to start so far in 2015 as he is hitting .345 with 4 SB’s. Bourjos has really turned on as of late as in the past week he is hitting .429 (6-14) with a double, triple, and 3 RBI’s. Bourjos has fared well against Liriano as he has posted a career .304 average   (7-23) with 2 double and a triple.
