Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/10

* Please Note – Write-up was completed during the afternoon of 5/9 so some statistics won’t be up to date after the Saturday games are completed.

  • High Cost – Michael Pineda  – New York Yankees

Michael Pineda has had a great start to his 2015 season and is turning into the “ace” of the Yankees rotation as so far this season, Pineda has posted a 4-0 record with a 2.97 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking 38 batters in 39.1 IP. Pineda has held the current Baltimore roster to just a .233 average with 30 strikeouts in 86 AB’s. Pineda did have his worst start of his season against Baltimore in mid-April however, he did strikeout 9 Orioles in that matchup and was quite impressive against the Orioles in 2014 as in 2 games started he posted a 0.73 ERA while striking out 12 batters in 12.1 IP.

  • Value Pick – Bartolo Colon – New York Mets

Bartolo Colon, the 41 year old journeyman, is continuing to get it done at the MLB level as the right hander in 2015 has posted a 5-1 record with a 2.90 ERA and 0.94 WHIP while striking out 34 batters in 40.1 IP. Colon certainly doesn’t have overpowering stuff at his age, but he has great command of his fastball which he threw for 84% of his pitches in 2014. If Colon doesn’t have his command, he can get hit hard however he has been piling up decent strikeout totals as he has posted a 7.6 K/9 ratio and has at least 5 K’s in 5 of his 6 outings in 2015.

  • High Cost – Yasmani Grandal – Los Angeles Dodgers

In December of 2014, the Dodgers pulled off a little known trade to acquire Yasmani Grandal from the San Diego Padres and as of right now, this might be one of the biggest steals of the offseason as Grandal is currently hitting .307 with 4 homeruns and 13 RBI’s on the season. Grandal has been killing it as of lately as over the past week, Grandal is hitting .684 with 3 homeruns and 11 RBI’s highlighted by a monster 4 for 4 performance against the Milwaukee Brewers in which he hit 2 homeruns and drove in 8 RBI’s. Grandal is a switch hitter but has done most of his damage from the left side of the plate as he is hitting .308.

  • Value Pick – Russell Martin  – Toronto Blue Jays

I’m sticking with Russell Martin for the second straight day as the veteran catcher as of Saturday, has hit .609 with 4 homeruns and 5 RBI’s over the past week. Martin has a favorable matchup against Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox in which he has posted a career .313 (5-16) average with 4 homeruns and 7 RBI’s. Martin is hitting .366 at home on the season and has been solid against the Red Sox in 2015 as he is hitting .364 (4-11) with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. I know Martin won’t be the cheapest catcher to get but Buchholz and the entire Red Sox pitching staff have really struggled and Martin should have plenty of changes with runners on base on Sunday.

First Base

  • High Cost – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks

This is obviously a pretty safe pick and although Goldschmidt is going to go you a good chunk of your salary, he has been amazing over the past 10 days as he is hitting .467 with 4 homeruns (3 HR’s in his last 3 games entering Saturday) and 11 RBI’s. Goldschmidt will be going against Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres on Sunday which he has posted a career .455 (5-11) with a homerun and 3 RBI’s. Goldschmidt has fared well against right-handed pitching on the season as he is hitting .354 with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI’s in 82 AB’s.

  • Value Pick – David Ortiz  – Boston Red Sox

I’m currently watching the Red Sox game while writing this and I’m hesitant to pick any Red Sox players again for Sunday as they just can’t seem to get anything going and seem dejected, however, I’m going to roll with Ortiz on Sunday as he does have 37 homeruns at the Rogers Center which is more than any other player. Ortiz will be up against R.A. Dickey of the Blue Jays which he has posted a career .381 average with 2 doubles, 2 homeruns, and 7 RBI’s. Ortiz is only hitting .242 on the season but has done better against right hand pitching hitting a .294 mark with 4 homeruns and 11 RBI’s.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Dee Gordon  – Miami Marlins

I’m going with Dee Gordon on Sunday as my high cost second baseman as Gordon is having an incredible first season with the Marlins hitting .437 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, 12 RBI’s and 12 SB’s. Gordon was off on Friday due to a sore right leg, but it’s doesn’t look like the injury is anything significant and currently has a 12 game hitting streak and is hitting .500 over the past week. Gordon has had success against Ryan Vogelsong as he has posted a career .345 (10-29) average against the right-hander.

  • Value Pick – Brian Dozier  - Minnesota Twins

Brain Dozier hasn’t had a great start to his 2015 season as he currently is hitting just .235 on the season with 2 homeruns and 14 RBI’s but he has picked up a bit as of late as over the past 6 games he is hitting .333 over his past 6 games with 3 doubles, a triple, and 4 RBI’s. Dozier has had good success of Danny Salazar of the Cleveland Indians as in his career he has posted a .583 average with 3 doubles, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s.

Shortstop (Going w/ 2 value picks today)

  • High Value –  Eric Aybar  – Los Angeles Angels

Eric Aybar is showing some great value on Sunday as although the 9 year veteran is only hitting .223 on the season with 9 RBI’s he has a favorable matchup against Scott Feldman of the Houston Astros in which he has posted a career .424 average with 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 3 RBI’s. Aybar has done well against Houston over his past three seasons as he is hitting .285 (39-137) with a homerun and 19 RBI’s. Aybar might be getting past his prime but he has collected at least 1 base hit in 5 of his last 6 games.

  • Value Pick – Alcides Escobar  – Kansas City Royals

Alcides Escobar was recently sidelined with a concussion however has fared well in his two games back as he has collected 2 hits in each of his last 2 games with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Escobar is hitting .307 on the season and is career 1 for 2 against Shane Greene of the Detroit Tigers. Escobar is hitting .315 against right-handed pitching and as his price is pretty low at the moment, he has some good value for Sunday night baseball if you’re looking to save some money at the shortstop position.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Kris Bryant – Chicago Cubs

Kris Bryant has been exiting since he was called up in mid-April and although the third basemen has struggled a bit over the past week, he still is hitting .278 on the season with 6 doubles and 14 RBI’s. Bryant has yet to face Matt Garza of the Milwaukee Brewers in his young career, however, the current Cubs roster is hitting .329 (23-70) off Garza and I expect that Cubs could have a good offensive day at Miller Park. Bryant has actually fared better against right-handed pitching on the young season hitting at a .304 mark and also has hit .317 away from Wrigley Field. Bryant does have a lot of power and I expect it to be any day now when he hits his first MLB homerun.

  • Value Pick – Chase Headley – New York Yankees

Chase Headley is showing some good value on Sunday as the slugging third basemen has a favorable matchup against the Bud Norris of the Baltimore Orioles in which he has posted a career .368 average (7-19) with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI’s. Headley is hitting just .234 on the season but has collected at least one base hit in 8 of his last 10 games. Headley is a switch hitter who is having a much better season batting from the left side of the plate as he is hitting .261 and as he is at home in Yankee Stadium, Headley certainly has enough power to get it over the short porch in right field.

  • High Cost – Matt Holiday – St. Louis Cardinals

I’m going with Matt Holiday on the Sunday as the veteran outfielder is having a great season hitting .340 with 2 homeruns and 17 RBI’s. Holiday is hitting a solid .292 over the past week which included a three-run homerun on Thursday night. Holiday is will be squaring off against Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates in which he has posted a career .417 average with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Holiday is hitting .360 against left-handed pitching and has hit .301 against the Pirates over the past three seasons.

  • High Cost – Starling Marte – Pittsburgh Pirates

I’m going with Starling Marte of the Pirates as my other high cost pick as although Marte is hitting just .275 on the season, he has collected 7 homeruns and driven in 21 RBI’s. Marte has been playing well as of late as he has hit .400 (10-25) over the past week and has hit .325 at PNC Park on the year. Marte is only 1 for 5 life time with a double against the Cardinals Tyler Lyons in his career, however, Marte is hitting .500 against left-hand pitching in 2015 and as he is seeing the ball well as of late, I think he is a good option on Sunday.

  • Value Pick – Chris Coghlan  – Washington Nationals

I’m going with Chris Coghlan as my first value pick of the day on the basis that I feel that the Cubs should have a strong offensive day against Matt Garza and that Coghlan has had good success of Garza as he has posted a career .556 average (1.111 SLG) with 3 doubles and a triple. Coghlan has only collected 17 hits on the season (.218) average, however nine of those base hits have been at least a double or better (5 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR).

  • Value Pick – Avisail Garcia  – Chicago White Sox

Avisail Garcia is hitting .319 with a homerun and 9 RBI’s so far in 2015 and has collected at least one base hit in 11 of his last 12 games. Garcia does have some power and I like the match up against the rookie, Michael Lorenzen of the Cincinnati Reds as he has given up 4 homeruns in just 2 starts (11.0 IP) on the season. Garcia is hitting .301 against right-handed pitching and is hitting .320 during day games so far in 2015.
