Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/11

  • High Cost – Max Scherzer  – Washington Nationals

You know you’re one of better fantasy pitchers to have when you have your worst game of the season, but still able to get around 15 fantasy points in most of the daily formats. Scherzer gave up 5 runs in his last outing against the Marlins but still able to pick up the win while going 7.0 innings and striking out 10. Scherzer is only 2-3 on the season however he has pitched well as he has posted a 2.11 ERA and 0.94 ERA while striking out 49 batters in 42.2 IP. Scherzer has limited experience against the Diamondbacks roster but he has held too Arizona regulars (Aaron Hill & Mark Trumbo) to a combined .100 (2-20) average. Scherzer has a 10.3 K/9 so far in 2015 and if you can afford him, Scherzer is always a safe option.

  • Value Pick – Danny Duffy – Kansas City Royals

I’m going to go with Danny Duffy as my “value pick” at the pitchers position today as although the lefty got rocked in his last outing against Cleveland, he has a good history against the current Texas lineup and certainly has the capability and arsenal to pitch a solid game. Duffy has a lackluster 4.55 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 2015 but does have a 7.0 K/9 ratio and pitched very well before his last start against the strong hitting Detroit Tigers in which he went 7 innings, giving up just 1 run while striking out 7. Duffy is holding the current Texas roster to just a .143 average and .182 OBP and although he is a risk, he has good value at his price tag on Monday.

  • High Cost – Stephen Vogt  – Oakland Athletics

Stephen Vogt has been one of the better fantasy catchers early in the season and although he did enter Sunday game in a mini 0-12 slump, Vogt came through for his fantasy owners with a 3 for 4 outing with a solo homerun. Vogt is hitting .340 on the season while slugging .660 and has collected 8 homeruns and 26 RBI’s. Vogt will be facing Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox on Monday and although he has limited experience against the righty (1 for 3 lifetime), Vogt has crushed right handed pitching throughout the season to the tune of a .359 average with 7 homeruns and 20 RBI’s. Porcello has given up 6 homeruns in 6 games started this season and feel that Vogt could take him yard tonight.

  • Value Pick – Devin Mesoraco – Cincinnati Reds

Devin Mesoraco missed the majority of April due to a hip injury and with and although he numbers aren’t great at the moment (it’s a relatively small simple size to go), he has some great value for his price tag on Monday. Mesoraco displayed in 2014 that he certainly has some power as in 114 games played, he belted 25 homeruns while hitting .273. Mesoraco was the DH over the weekend but I do expect him to be behind the plate tonight and has decent matchup against Shelby Miller of the Atlanta Braves in which he has a career .300 average with a double, a homerun and 2 RBI’s. He played in both games this past weekend and looks like he found his swing on Sunday going 2-4 with a triple and a RBI. Make sure Mesoraco gets the start tonight before plugging him in however, for the low to mid $2,000 price tag, Maseoraco is a great value pick tonight.

First Base

  • High Cost – Eric Hosmer – Kansas City Royals

Eric Hosmer has had a great 2015 to date as the young first baseman is hitting .320 with 5 homeruns and 25 RBI’s on the season. Hosmer is in the top 5 of most expensive players to pick tonight, however, I think he is worth the cost as he has a good matchup against Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers in which he has a lifetime .400 average with 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s. Hosmer is hitting .358 and slugging .657 against right-handed pitching on the season and has hit .295 against the Texas Rangers over his past three seasons. Hosmer is currently riding a 7 game hitting streak and is hitting an impressive .346 over his last week and .342 in the month of May.

  • Value Pick – Billy Butler  – Oakland Athletics

I’m going with the former Royal, Billy Butler as my “value pick” at first base today as the veteran right-handed hitter is very familiar  with Rick Porcello and has had some good success against him in his career. Butler, who is a career .294 hitting, has a career average of .347 (17-49) with 4 doubles, a homerun, and 9 RBI’s off Porcello. The Red Sox and Porcello have both struggled in Porcello has struggled in his career in Oakland posted just a 1-4 record with a 5.40 ERA over a span of 6 starts. The Red Sox as a team generally struggle in Oakland and with how bad their pitching has been in 2015 and for the small price, I think Butler who has been batting clean-up for Oakland could be in for a good day.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Jimmy Paredes  – Baltimore Orioles

Jimmy Paredes has absolutely been raking the ball in 2015 as he comes into his matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays with a .355 average with 5 homeruns and 15 RBI’s. Paredes doesn’t have much experience against the Blue Jays Marco Estrada (0-2 lifetime) but as Estrada is a righty, Paredes will be hitting from the left-side of the plate which is where he has done the majority of his damage on the season hitting .353 (24-68) with all five of his homeruns. Paredes has been especially dangerous at Camden Yards on the season as he is hitting .421 at his home ballpark and he also has been hot as of late hitting .360 over the past week with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s.

  • Value Pick – Dustin Pedroia  - Boston Red Sox

Dustin Pedroia has a great matchup on Monday and has fared well playing near his childhood hometown as the scrappy 2nd basemen grew up not too far from Oakland.   Pedroia has a lot of experience against Scott Kazmir of the Athletics as they used to face off often when Kazmir was with the Rays and has posted a career .500 (19-38) average with 5 doubles, a triple, 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s against the lefty. Over the past three seasons, Pedroia has hit .326 against the Athletics and .354 at the Coliseum. Pedroia has shown that he has regained some of his lost power as he if fully healthy in 2015, and for the price he has solid value on Monday night.

  • High Cost –  Marcus Semien  – Oakland Athletics

I went with Marcus Semien on Saturday and he paid off collecting three hits while swiping two SB’s and wished I stuck with him although he had an unfavorable matchup against Felix Hernandez as he belted two HR’s King Felix on Sunday. As I mentioned above, the Red Sox and Rick Porcello haven’t fared well in Oakland and even though is 0-4 lifetime against Porcello, I can’t go away from a guy that is seeing the ball as well as Semien is at the moment. Semien has be great all season as he is hitting .307 with 5 homeruns and 14 RBI’s while stealing 6 bases. Semien is hitting .440 over the past week and as he showed over this past weekend, has to capability to fill the stat sheet as he shown he has both power and speed.

  • Value Pick – J.J. Hardy  – Baltimore Orioles

J.J Hardy came off the DL last week and got back in the swing of things as he really was the only Orioles that fared well against Michael Pineda going 2 for 4 with a solo homerun. Hardy is a little bit past his prime, but as he showed throughout his career that he some solid pop in his bat as in his 10 year career, he has had 5 seasons of at least 20 homeruns. Hardy has never faced the Blue Jays Marco Estrada and although Hardy is just a .260 career hitter, his price tag is pretty low at the moment which gives good value if you’re trying to save a few bucks at the SS position.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Evan Longoria – Tampa Bay Rays

Evan Longoria is starting to display the power we all know he has as over the past week the veteran third baseman is hitting .364 with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI’s. On the season, Longoria is hitting at a .292 mark with 4 homeruns and 12 RBI’s and has a great matchup on Monday against CC Sabathia in which he has posted a career .414 (24-58) average with 8 doubles, 6 homeruns and 14 RBI’s.  Longoria is hitting .455 (10-22) against left-hand pitching in 2015 and is hitting .339 at Tropicana Field on the season.

  • Value Pick – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals

Mike Moustakas has missed his last three games due to personal reasons, but as he is expected to be back in the lineup this Monday, he has great value. Moustakas is hitting .327 on the season with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s and has a good matchup against Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers as he has posted a career .571 (4-7) average with a homerun and 2 RBI’s. Moustakas is hitting .339 and slugging .451 against right-handed pitching on the season and fared well against the Rangers in 2014 posting a .368 average. Be sure the Moustakas is back in the lineup before placing him in on your team(s) today, but if he is and you want to save some money at 3B, the slugging Moustakas is a good pick on Monday.

  • High Cost – Andrew McCutchen – Pittsburgh Pirates

After an awful start to his 2015 season, McCutchen is finally starting to hit like the player we’ve come to know over the past few seasons as he has collected at least one hit in 10 of his last 11 games and has a .333 average with 4 doubles over the past week. Even with a the recent surge in hitting just .223 on the season with one homerun, however, as the center fielder is a career .296 hitter and has average 25 homeruns a season over his past four seasons, it’s only a matter of time in which McCutchen starts to tear it up. McCutchen has a great matchup on Monday as he goes against Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies in which he has posted a .500 (3-6) average with 2 homeruns and 2 RBI’s.

  • High Cost – Ryan Braun  – Milwaukee Brewers

Ryan Braun is only hitting .255 on the season as of Monday, however the slugger has been hitting well as of late as he has posted a .348 average over the past week and has hit 6 homeruns while collected 16 RBI’s so far in 2015. Braun has a great matchup against the struggling Jeff Samardzija in which he has posted a career .500 average (9-18) with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI’s.  So far in 2015 Braun is hitting better against right-handed pitching and over the past three seasons, has a respectable .282 average against righties. Braun has always hit well at Miller Park (.303 average over the past three seasons) and as he is a career .305 hitter, I think Braun has some big games in him over this home stand.

  • Value Pick – Michael Cuddyer  – New York Mets

Michael Cuddyer got a day of rest on Sunday, but should be back in the starting line-up against the left-handed pitching Jon Lester on Monday night. Cuddyer is only hitting .248 on the season, but he has hit 3 homeruns and collected 12 RBI’s on the season and has hit well as of late as over the past week he has hit .357 (5-14). Cuddyer has fared well against Lester as in his career Cuddyer has a .294 average with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. Cuddyer is hitting .292 against left-handed pitching on the season and slugging .565 against lefties over his past three seasons.

  • Value Pick – Gerardo Parra – Milwaukee Brewers

I’m going to stay in Milwaukee for my first value pick in the outfield as I’m going to roll with Gerardo Parra as similar to Braun, he has some good success against Jeff Samardzija. In this career, Parra has posted a .364 (4-11) average with a homerun against Samardzija. Parra is hitting .333 with a homerun and 7 RBI’s over the past week. Now the Gomez is back in the Milwaukee outfield, it will be difficult to for Parra to get some starts, but between the fact Parra has had success against Samardzija and that Samardzija is a righty, I think there is a decent shot the Parra gets a start tonight. Ensure to check the starting lineups that Parra in before picking him, but if he has, he has some good value tonight.
