Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 5/18

USA TODAY Sports

Pitchers

  • High Cost – Matt Harvey  – New York Mets

There are a few “aces” we can choose from on Monday night, but I’m going to go with Harvey as I feel he is the most consistent performer of available “aces” that are going tonight. On the season, Harvey is 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in 46.2 IP and is coming off one of his better performances against the Cubs as he went 7 innings giving up no runs while striking out 9. Harvey has a 9.1 K/9 ratio on the season and is going against a St. Louis Cardinal team that showed against Corey Kluber and the Indians that they can strikeout as Kluber racked up 18 K’s over 8.0 IP against St. Louis just under a week ago. Harvey has gone at least 6.0 innings in all of his starts so far in 2015 and I expect another strong start tonight.

  • Value Pick – Rubby De La Rosa – Arizona Diamondbacks

If you want to save some money at the pitching position tonight, I would suggest taking a look at Rubby De La Rosa. De La Rosa might have a 4.50 ERA and 1.20 WHIP on the season as to date but he has had a few gems over his last 4 starts and has struck out 42 batters in 44.0 IP this season. De La Rosa will be facing a Miami Marlins team that has lost 6 of their last 7 and just fired their manager last night largely due to their recent offensive struggles. De La Rosa is a risky pick but his price-tag is a bit low in my opinion based on his matchup and ability to get K’s. If you want to load up on a couple of big hitters on Monday night, then De La Rosa is good option for your team.

Catchers

  • High Cost – Stephen Vogt  – Oakland Athletics

I have to stick with Vogt as the best “high cost” catcher on the market today mainly as the is facing a rookie right-hander in Lance McCullers of the Astros, who is being called up from Double-AA today to make a spot start for Houston. Vogt is hitting .327 on the season with 9 homeruns and 30 RBI’s and although he is just hitting .231 over the past week, he is hitting .341 against right-handed pitching. Vogt has displayed most of his power against righties on the season as he has 8 homeruns and 23 RBI’s against righties and has hit .339 with 7 homeruns away from his home ballpark on the season.

  • Value Pick – Nick Hundley – Colorado Rockies

Nick Hundley will have a tough matchup against Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night but for his price tag and the fact that the Rockies are at home at Coors Field makes Hundley a solid value pick. Hundley is hitting .312 on the season with 2 homeruns and 9 RBI’s and although he is only 1 for 11 against Hamels in his career, the one hit was a 2 run homerun. Hundley is hitting .361 at home on the season and as there are limited options for “value” catchers tonight, Hundley will be my guy at the mid-$2000 range.

First Base

  • High Cost – Jose Abreu – Chicago White Sox

I’m going to go with Jose Abreu as my “high cost” first basemen on Monday as the slugging first baseman has been really hitting the ball as of late and has had success against Corey Kluber of the Cleveland Indians. Abreu is hitting .295 with 6 homeruns and 22 RBI’s on the season and is hitting .400 (8-20) with 5 RBI’s over the past week. Abreu has fared well against Kluber as in his career he has posted a .381 average with 2 doubles, 2 homeruns and 6 RBI’s. Abreu is hitting .314 against right-handed pitching on the season and although Kluber was lights out in his last start he has been struggling on the season and after throwing 113 pitches in his last outing, I think the White Sox could get to Kluber in this one.

  • Value Pick – Lucas Duda – New York Mets

Lucas Duda is having a great 2015 season as the first baseman is hitting .294 with 3 homeruns and 14 RBI’s on the season. Duda has been seeing the ball well as of late as he has hit .360 (9-25) with 4 doubles, a homerun, and 2 RBI’s over the past week. Duda has yet to face the right-handed John Lackey of the St. Louis Cardinals but has collect at least one hit in 7 of his last 8 games and has hit .286 while slugging .486 at home in 2015.  Duda had 30 homeruns in 2014 and I’m hoping he starts to get on the pace against with a big performance on Monday night.

Second Base

  • High Cost – Jose Altuve – Houston Astros

The scrappy 2nd baseman is once again having a great season as he is hitting .323 with 5 homeruns, 24 RBI’s and 13 SB’s in 2015. Altuve has been hitless in his last two contests but has a favorable matchup against the left-hander Drew Pomeranz of the Oakland Athletics in which Altuve has posted a career .500 (5-10) average with a double and RBI. Altuve has been raking left-handed pitching throughout the season to the tune of a .419 average. Altuve has hit .444 and slugged .704 against Oakland on the season and is worth the investment on Monday night.

  • Value Pick – Aaron Hill  - Arizona Diamondbacks

Aaron Hill has really picked it up over the past couple of weeks and is now hitting .291 with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI’s on the season. Hill has hit .400 over the past week and draws a good matchup against Dan Haren of the Miami Marlins as Hill has posted a career .323 average with 2 doubles, 2 triples, a homerun and 7 RBI’s. Hill has hit .283 and has a .517 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching on the season and has fared away from home as he is hitting .324 away from Chase Field on the season.

Shortstop

  • High Cost –  Chris Owings – Arizona Diamondbacks

There won’t be too many nights that I will be writing about Chris Owings as a “high cost” pick at the shortstop, but with the limited action tonight and Owings favorable pitching match-up Owings will be my selection on Monday. Owings is hitting just .270 on the season with 2 homeruns and 10 RBI’s however has been incredible against Dan Haren of the Miami Marlins as he has posted a career .643 (9-14) average with 2 doubles against the right-hander. Owings is hitting .306 against right-handers on the season and .280 away from Chase Field in 2015. Haren has struggled against Arizona and as the current Diamondbacks roster is hitting .302 against Haren, I like Owings chances tonight.

  • Value Pick – Marwan Gonzalez/Jonathan Villar- Houston Astros

The daily fantasy leagues have finally caught on to how well Freddy Galvis has performed as of late and now that his cost has gone up, I need to find some new value at the SS position. For Monday, I’m going to roll with whoever the Astros decide to roll at shortstop. Although Villar has performed well in his last two starts, I think the Astros will go with Gonzalez as even though Gonzalez is only hitting .234 on the season, he is hitting .350 (7-20) against left-handed pitching. Gonzalez is a perfect 1 for 1 lifetime against Drew Pomeranz of the Oakland Athletics and has enough power in his bat to get us a homerun in this one. If Villar starts, he still is a good option as he showed yesterday with a 2 for 3 performance with two doubles and a RBI.

Third Base

  • High Cost – Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies

Nolan Arenado disappointed for me last night, but with the limited “high cost” options at third base and for the fact that Matt Carpenter is going against Matt Harvey on Monday night, I’m going to go with Arenado. Arenado is hitting .282 on the season with 7 homeruns and 19 RBI’s and although he has limited experience against Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies, he is 1 for 2 with a walk, double, and RBI against the left-hander. Arenado is hitting .300 against left-handed pitching on the season and has hit .300 at Coors Field with 21 homeruns over the past three seasons.

  • Value Pick – Nick Castellanos – Detroit Tigers

Nick Castellanos is only hitting .239 with 3 homeruns and 13 RBI’s on the season, however, has hit .348 (8-23) with a double, homerun, and 2 RBI’s over the past week. Castellanos has collected at least one hit in 9 of his last 11 games and will be facing Mike Fiers of the Milwaukee Brewers who has given up 6 homeruns in just 36.0 IP so far on the season. Castellanos always has the ability to go 0-4 with a couple of strikeouts however, at the Mid to Low $2000 range, he does have solid value if you want to save some money at third base on Monday.

Outfield

  • High Cost – Josh Reddick – Oakland Athletics

Josh Reddick is hitting .328 with 6 homeruns and 28 RBI’s on the season and as he is going against a rookie right-hander on Monday, he is a good choice in the OF tonight. Reddick has collected all 6 of his homeruns on the season against right-handed pitching and is hitting .370 and slugging .652 against righties on the season. Reddick is hitting .316 against the Astros in 2015 and hit .385 (20-52) with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s against them in 2014.

  • High Cost – George Springer – Houston Astros

George Springer is only hitting .190 on the season but does have 6 homeruns, 15 RBI’s and 10 SB on the season. Springer is facing a left-hander tonight in which although he is hitting just .222 against, he is slugging .500 as he has hit three homeruns in just 36 AB’s against lefties on the season. Springer has a great combination of power and speed and although he hasn’t been able to hit much for average, this is certainly a player that has the talent to be able to put up big numbers on the offensive side of the plate.

  • High Value – Michael Cuddyer – New York Mets

Curtis Granderson came through for me yesterday with a lead-off homerun and I’m going to be sticking with the Mets outfield on Monday night and go with Michael Cuddyer as he has fared well against John Lackey of the St. Louis Cardinals in the past. Cuddyer is hitting just .242 on the season with 3 homeruns and 17 RBI’s however against John Lackey, Cuddyer has posted a career .320 (8-25) average with 4 homeruns and 6 RBI’s. Cuddyer has hit better against right-handed pitching on the season and is hitting .286 at home so far in 2015.

  • Value Pick – Melky Cabrera  – Chicago White Sox

Melky Cabrera is hitting .259 on the season with a homerun and 14 RBI’s but has been hot as of late and has fared well against Corey Kluber in his career. Cabrera is hitting .375 with 5 runs scored and 3 RBI’s over his last 4 games and has posted a career .455 (5-11) average with a double and triple against Corey Kluber. Cabrera is hitting an impressive .327 against right-handed pitching on the season and fared well against Cleveland as he is hitting .297 against the Indians over his past three seasons.
