Daily Fantasy Baseball – High Cost / Value Picks – 5/28/15
Not a huge slate of games for today so I’m just going to offer the lineup I’m looking at playing tonight as of this morning. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
- High Cost – Corey Kluber – Cleveland Indians
I was initially thinking of trying to save some money and go with Eduardo Rodriguez of the Boston Red Sox tonight as the young left-hander has some great stuff and is posting a solid 2.98 ERA with a 8.2 K/9 ratio in Triple-AAA Pawtucket, however, as I don’t see him as an option as of yet, I’m going to play it safe and go with Corey Kluber. Kluber had a rough start to the season however, has been absolutely dominant as of late and is currently posting a 3.49 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out 83 batters in 69.2 IP. Over his last three starts, Kluber has gone 25.0 innings, giving up just 2 runs while striking out an incredible 37 batters. Kluber is holding the current Seattle lineup to a .190 average and with his ability to get to double-digit K’s, is worth the money on Thursday night.
- High Cost – Yan Gomes – Cleveland Indians
There isn’t much shaking at the catchers position tonight as the “high cost” catchers don’t have great matchups. I was originally thinking McCann as is going against a hittable right-hander in Kendall Graveman, however, McCann has been terrible away from Yankees Stadium on the season and Oakland not usually a great place for hitters. With that being said, I’m looking at Yan Gomes tonight as I believe he should get the start as he had a day off yesterday. Gomes has missed the majority of the season due to the injury however, in 2014 Gomes showed how he could hit the long ball collecting 21 homeruns on the season. Gomes is facing a southpaw in James Paxton tonight, and as Gomes hit .331 and slugged .517 against left-handers last year, I think he has good value tonight.
- Value Pick – Miguel Cabrera – Detroit Tigers
You can generally find good value at the first base position on any given night, however, I decided to spend my money on Cabrera tonight. Cabrera comes into this matchup hitting .333 with 11 homeruns and 32 RBI’s and is hitting .348 over the past week. Cabrera is only hitting .250 against the left-hander C.J. Wilson of the Los Angeles Angels in his career however, he does have a homerun and 3 RBI’s against him. Cabrera is slugging .625 against left-hand pitching and hitting .370 away from Comerica Park on the season. Wilson has struggled a bit as of late and I think he could have a long day against a powerful right-handed hitting lineup that Detroit will bring on Thursday.
- High Cost – Neil Walker – Pittsburgh Pirates
I’m going with Neil Walker on Thursday as although the second baseman is only hitting .150 over the past week and just .253 with 3 homeruns and 16 RBI’s on the season, he has a favorable matchup against Ian Kennedy of the San Diego Padres on Thursday. In his career against Kennedy, Walker has hit .444 (8-18) with 3 homeruns and 9 RBI’s. Walker should be hitting on the left side of the plate tonight in which he has .268 average on the season with all three of his homeruns. Walker fared well in his only series at PETCO Park last year going 4-9 with a double, homerun and 5 RBI’s.
- High Cost – Eric Aybar – Los Angeles Angels
I’m going with Eric Aybar as my shortstop today as I like how the veteran shortstop is hitting .310 in May and has a great matchup against Detroit’s Buck Farmer (Great Baseball Name!). Farmer hasn’t pitched yet in 2015 but in limited experience in the Majors, he has been rocked as in the 9.1 he has pitched he has given up 12 hits and 12 ER’s. Farmer has all sorts of trouble with left handed hitters as they are hitting .364 and slugging .773 off him in his young career. Aybar is hitting .271 on the season with a homerun and 14 RBI’s and comes into game with a 6 game hitting streak. We can’t depend on Aybar for his power, however, it’s encouraging to see that he gotten 2 SB’s in his last three games and I’m hoping that he can get 1 or 2 more on Thursday.
- Value Pick – David Freese – Los Angeles Angels
I’m staying in Los Angeles and going with David Freese as although Freese is hitting just .220 on the season, he does have 8 homeruns and 27 RBI’s. Similar to Aybar, I like the Angels matchup against Buck Farmer and although Freese is struggling on the season, I imagine that he will pick up his average soon as he is a career .275 hitter. Freese is coming off a 2-4 performance with a double and a run and as he has generally been batting 5th in the Angels order, I think he could have some good opportunities with men on base on Thursday against Farmer.
- High Cost – Yoenis Cespedes – Detroit Tigers
As you can tell at this point, I’m really stacking hitters in the Angels/Tigers game tonight. For my first pick in the outfield I’m going with Yoenis Cespedes, who hasn’t disappointed me in the few times I’ve taken him in 2015. Cespedes is hitting .291 with 6 homeruns and 27 RBI’s on the season and in his career against the left-hander C.J. Wilson, he has posted a .333 (6-18) average with 4 walks. Cespedes has actually struggled against left-handers this season hitting only .182 (6-33) however, half of those hits have been homeruns. Cespedes has hit 6 homeruns over his past three seasons at Angel Stadium and I’m hoping that he can add another one tonight.
- High Cost – Will Venable – San Diego Padres
Will Venable has some good value tonight as the center fielder is hitting .286 with 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s on the season and has hit .370 over his past week. Venable has a good matchup against Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett in which he has posted a career .421 (8-19) average with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s. Venable is hitting .333 in May and slugging .461 against right-handed pitching on the season. Venable hit .300 in his only series against Pittsburgh in 2014 and for mid-$2000 price range has good value tonight.
- High Value – Kole Calhoun– Los Angeles Angels
Kole Calhoun has struggled a bit as of late, however is still posting a solid .281 average with 4 homeruns and 23 RBI’s and is another left-handed hitting Angel going against Buck Farmer of Detroit on Thursday. Calhoun has been great at Angels Stadium on the season hitting .341 with 3 homeruns and 14 RBI’s and has the speed to possibility get us a SB. Over his past three seasons he has a .294 average against Detroit and is hitting .303 in night games in 2015. Calhoun has lately been hitting cleanup in the Angels order, and with Trout and Pujols in front of him, I’m hoping this will provide Calhoun with some solid chances with runners on base.
