Daily Fantasy Baseball – 7/19/15

Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.

USA TODAY Sports

Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!

Pitcher – Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs

A lot of good pitchers out there today but I’m going to save a little money and go with Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs. Arrieta is having another great season as he has posted a 2.66 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while striking out 123 batters in 121.2 IP. Arrieta currently has a 9.1 K/9 ratio and a strikeout rate of 26.11% (ranked 10th in MLB). As I mentioned yesterday when taking Jon Lester, the Atlanta Braves offensive has been lacking as of late, especially as they have been without their best hitter in Freddie Freeman. Atlanta is ranked 22nd in MLB in runs scored and has only scored more than 3 runs once in their last three games. Atlanta does a decent job making contact with the ball, but Arrieta’s slider is downright filthy and I think he can post very similar numbers that Lester did yesterday.

Catcher – Jonathan Lucroy – Milwaukee Brewers

Milwaukee RHB’s will be a popular stack play today as they are going against a hittable Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates and for my catcher, I’m going to go with Jonathan Lucroy. Lucroy is having a down year and is hitting just .237 with 3 homeruns and 19 RBI’s after missing considerable time due to a broken toe. Lucroy did a 2-run homerun in yesterday’s contest and has had success against Locke in the past as in his career, he has posted a .353 average with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Locke is allowing RHB’s to have a .275 average and .716 OPS against him. Over the past three seasons Lucroy has a .329 average against LHP and I as think Lucroy is in for a big second half, he had good value today.

First Base – Mark Reynolds – St. Louis Cardinals

To be able to afford a decent outfield today, I need to save money in the infield and I’m doing this by selecting Mark Reynolds of the St. Louis Cardinals. Reynolds is hitting just .224 on the season but does have 8 homeruns and 33 RBI’s and has had great success against the left-handed Jonathan Niese of the New York Mets. In his career against the left-hander, Reynolds has posted a .500 (6-12) average with 2 homeruns. Niese is allowing RHB’s to have a .277 average and .776 OPS against him on the season. Reynolds has fared well against the Mets in 2015 as he has posted a .313 average and .853 OPS and I’m hoping that he can go deep in this one.

Second Base – DJ LeMahieu – Colorado Rockies

DJ LeMahieu is having a great season with the Rockies as the 4-year veteran is currently hitting .313 with 4 homeruns, 35 RBI’s and 10 SB. LeMahieu is hitting .385 over the past week and has a nice matchup against the right-handed Andrew Cashner of the San Diego Padres in which in his career he has posted a .500 (5-10) average and 1.145 OPS. Cashner is having an up and down season and currently is posting a 4.10 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. Cashner is allowing hitters to have a .267 average against him and really struggled in June posting a 6.55 ERA in 6 games started. LeMahieu is hitting .315 and has all 4 homeruns against RHP on the season and I think that he will be able to continue his hot hitting on Sunday.

Shortstop – Jean Segura – Milwaukee Brewers

Jean Segura started off July on a tear and although he has slowed down a bit as of late, the shortstop is still hitting .396 (19-48) in the month of July. On the season, Segura is hitting .273 with 3 homeruns, 24 RBI’s and 13 SB. Segura has had some success against Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates as he has posted a .273 (6-22) average with a homerun. Segura is hitting over .300 against LHP on the season and as I think the heart of the Brewers lineup is going to have a decent day, this will give Segura some decent RBI opportunities hitting from the 7th spot.

Third Base – David Freese – Los Angeles Angels

I’m going with David Freese on Sunday night as although the veteran third baseman is hitting just .240, he does have 10 homeruns and 39 RBI’s on the season. Freese will be up against Eduardo Rodriguez of the Boston Red Sox and although he hasn’t faced the Red Sox rookie in his career, he has hit .304 against LHP in his past three seasons. Freese is very affordable with a $2300 price tag and although it’s a bit of a reach, I’m hoping that he can tap into some of his power tonight and get us a homerun.

Outfield – Ryan Braun – Milwaukee Brewers

With the money I’ve saved in the infield, I’ll be able to go with Ryan Braun in my outfield with a very favorable matchup against Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Braun is hitting just .272 on the season but does have 16 homeruns, 57 RBI’s and 14 SB. In his career against the left-handed Locke, Braun has posted a .348 (8-23) average and .957 OPS. Braun has a .292 average and .933 OPS against LHP on the season and has posted a .304 average against the Pirates over his past three seasons.

Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds

Jay Bruce was really struggling finding hits earlier in the season but has really picked it up in July and is currently hitting .255 with 14 homeruns and 46 RBI’s. Bruce is currently hitting .356 in July and comes into this matchup with a 5 game hit streak. Bruce has a good matchup against the right-handed Carlos Carrasco in which in his career, he has posted a .500 (3-6) average with 2 homeruns. Bruce has been great against the Indians this year as he is currently hitting .438 against him and for a reasonable price, I’m going with Bruce today in hopes he has another 2 for 3 performance with a homerun and 4 RBI’s as he did yesterday.

Outfield – Hunter Pence – San Francisco Giants

In his limited action this season Pence has been solid and has posted a .300 average with 4 homeruns and 23 RBI’s. Pence is currently hitting .345 in the month of July and has a .500 average over the past week. Pence has a great matchup against Patrick Corbin of the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he has posted a .474 (9-19) average with 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 3 homeruns. Corbin has struggled in his two starts since returning from Tommy John Surgery and gave 3 homeruns against the Mets in his recent start. Pence is hitting .300 against LHP on the season and I think he could have another nice day against Corbin and the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
