Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/1/15

Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 8/1/15

Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!

Pitcher – Jacob DeGrom – New York Mets

Every time I see Jacob DeGrom is pitching I just think of his All-Star performance in which he mowed down the AL competition and how I must have him on my team if the matchup is right. I’m going to find the money to spend on DeGrom tonight as I like the matchup against the Washington Nationals who rank 8th in MLB in total strikeouts against RHP.  DeGrom enters the matchup with a 2.05 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 128 strikeouts in 127.1 IP. DeGrom is currently sporting a 9.0 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 26.12% which ranks 11th among qualified starters in MLB. DeGrom has allowed just 2 runs in his last three starts while striking out 26 batters in 21.2 IP. DeGrom is holding the current Nationals roster to a .247 average and I think he’ll continue his recent dominance against the Nationals on Saturday.

Catcher – Kyle Schwarber – Chicago Cubs

Kyle Schwarber has slowed down from his strong start with the Cubs, however the rookie catcher is still hitting .323 with 3 homeruns and 12 RBI’s in his 21 games this season. Schwarber is hitting just .150 over the past week however is still hitting an impressive .302 (13-43) with 8 walks in July. Schwarber has a solid matchup against the right-handed Matt Garza of the Milwaukee Brewers who comes into this matchup with a 5.20 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. Schwarber has yet to face Garza in his young career however is hitting an incredible .380 (19-50) against RHP on the season to go along with a 1.086 OPS. Garza is allowing LHB’s to have a .309 average against him on the season and although Garza has pitched better since the All-Star break, I’m still going to be stacking the Cubs LHB’s against him today.

First Base – Anthony Rizzo – Chicago Cubs

Anthony Rizzo struggled a bit coming out of the All-Star break but is starting to look like the All-Star as of late as in his past three games he is 6 for 11 with 3 homeruns and 6 RBI’s. On the season, Rizzo is hitting .287 with 19 homeruns and 57 RBI’s and is also sporting a .399 OBP. Rizzo has struggled a bit more against RHP on the season hitting .272, but he has posted a solid .902 OPS. Rizzo will also be up against Matt Garza tonight in which I’ve mentioned is allowing LHB’s to have an average of above .300. Rizzo has absolutely crushed the Brewers on the season as he comes into Saturday’s game with a .419 (13-31) average with 4 homeruns and 9 RBI’s. Rizzo is just 2 for 9 against Garza in his career, but with the way he is currently swinging the bat, I think Rizzo will find more success against Garza tonight.

Second Base – Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins

Brian Dozier is hitting just .253 on the season but has been a great fantasy player as he has picked up 22 homeruns and 56 RBI’s on the season. Dozier gets the call for my roster tonight as he is hitting at the friendly Target Field against a LHP in Seattle’s Mike Montgomery who has had a tendency as of late to give up the homerun ball. Dozier has been solid against LHP on the season as he has posted a .277 average and .911 OPS. Montgomery comes into the matchup with a solid 3.20 ERA and 1.21 WHIP but has been knocked around a bit in his last three starts going just 15.1 IP while giving up 11 runs on 18 hits and 12 BB’s. Montgomery has also given up 7 homeruns in his last 5 starts after giving up just 1 homerun in his first 6 starts. Dozier is hitting just .229 since the All-Star break but does have 6 homeruns in that time period and I expect him to have a good chance of another homerun tonight.

Shortstop – Brad Miller – Seattle Mariners

Brad Miller comes into his game with a .238 average with 8 homeruns and 33 RBI’s but he will get the start for my squad tonight as he has a decent matchup against Kyle Gibson of the Minnesota Twins in a good hitters ballpark (Target Field). Miller is only hitting .186 since the All-Star break however, has picked it up more as of late as he has hit .300 over the past week. Miller has had some success against the right-handed Gibson as in his career he has posted a .400 (4-10) average with a double. Miller generally gets the starts against RHP’s and is currently hitting .250 with all 8 of his homeruns against righties on the season. Gibson is coming off two of his worst starts of the season as he has gave up a combined 11 runs on 16 hits against the Angels in Yankees and I’m hoping his struggles continue against Brad Miller and Seattle tonight.

Third Base – Tyler Saladino – Chicago White Sox

I need to find some value at third base today and I’m going to take a risk with Tyler Saladino of the Chicago White Sox. In his 18 games with the White Sox, Saladino has been solid, hitting .260 with 2 homeruns and 6 RBI’s. Saladino will be up against Bryan Mitchell of the New York Yankees will be making his first start of the season and outside of a tough relief appearance against the Rays in early July in which he gave up 4 runs on 3 hits in just 2 IP, he has been solid posting a 2.89 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Mitchell has actually struggled more against RHB’s on the season allowing them to hit .292 average and .745 OPS. Saladino is currently hitting .283 against RHB’s and has a .333 average and .866 OPS at home this season. Saladino is a bit of a risky play tonight but I like what I saw with Saladino when I saw him first hand against the Red Sox and I’m going to roll with him tonight.

Outfield – Preston Tucker – Houston Astros

I went with Preston Tucker earlier this week and it didn’t completely pay off, but that is not going to scare me from not selecting him against as he has a solid matchup against the right-handed Jeremy Hellickson of the Arizona Diamondback on Saturday. Tucker comes into the matchup with a .270 average with 10 homeruns and 28 RBI’s. Tucker has been great against RHP on the season as he has posted a .304 average and .946 OPS and has hit all 10 of this homeruns against RHP. Tucker has yet to face Hellickson in his career, but is hitting .306 at home on the season. Hellickson has pitched well as of late however still comes into this matchup with a 4.60 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. Hellickson is allowing LHB’s to have a .291 average and .811 OPS against him on the season and I think that Tucker and the Astros will be able to have a good night against him.

Outfield – Justin Upton – San Diego Padres

Justin Upton is hitting just .249 on the season (career .272 hitter) however, he still is showing the power in his bat as he does have 18 homeruns, 56 RBI’s and 17 SB’s on the season. Upton has been heating up a bit as of late as he is hitting .261 with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI’s over the past week. Upton will be up against Jose Urena of the Miami Marlins in which he has yet to face in his career. Urena comes into this matchup with a 4.04 ERA and 1.42 WHIP and has actually struggled more against RHB’s as he is allowing them to have a .321 (26-81) average and .798 OPS. Upton has actually performed better against RHP’s on the season hitting .271 with a .842 OPS (compared to a .157 average and .417 vs. LHP). San Diego surprisingly didn’t trade any of their starts by yesterday’s trade deadline and I’m hoping that as they are all still together they come out with a bit of fire underneath and show their GM and Owner why it was a good reason to keep them.

Outfield – Chris Coghlan – Chicago Cubs

As I mentioned above, I was going to stack LHB’s against Matt Garza today and my last LHB will be Chris Coghlan who is hitting .248 with 11 homeruns and 24 RBI’s on the season. Coghlan is hitting just .219 in July after having a monster June in which he hit .317. Coghlan has a good matchup against Garza as in his career he has a .417 average with 3 doubles and a triple against the right-hander. Coghlan is hitting .260 with all 11 of his homeruns against RHP on the season and has actually hit better on the road this season (.279 average). As I mentioned, Garza has struggled against LHB’s on the season and as Coghlan has had good success against Garza in the past, I think he is a solid value pick today.
