Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/8/15 (Late Games)
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Tyson Ross – San Diego Padres
Tyson Ross is having another great season as the right-hander is currently posting a 3.37 ERA and 1.39 WHIP while striking out 142 batters in 133.2 IP. Ross has a solid matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies who currently are hitting .252 as a team (ranked 15th in MLB) and have scored just 409 runs on the season (ranked 26th in MLB). Philadelphia has struggled a bit more against RHP as they currently have a .248 average against righties. Ross currently has a 9.6 K/9 ratio and a strikeout rate of 24.96% (ranked 15th in MLB). Ross is holding opposing hitters to a .247 average on the season and I think as the Padres should be able to win this game tonight, Ross is the best pick for the price tonight.
Catcher – Derek Norris – San Diego Padres
Derek Morris started off on fire this season with the San Diego Padres and although he slowed down considerably, he is still hitting .241 with 12 homeruns and 52 RBI’s on the season. Norris gets the start for my squad today mostly due to the fact that he will be going up against a LHP in Adam Morgan of the Philadelphia Phillies. Norris is currently hitting .268 and has a .708 against LHP on the season. Morgan has struggled a bit as of late and looked quite hittable in his recent outing against the Atlanta Braves (5.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 3 BB). Morgan is allowing RHB’s to post a .296 average and .884 OPS against him on the season. Last time I went with Norris he came through with a monster 5 for 5 performance and as I like the Padres and the matchup against Morgan, I think he is a solid play tonight.
First Base – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks
Paul Goldschmidt is having another amazing season as the slugging first baseman is currently hitting .236 with 22 homeruns, 78 RBI’s, and 19 SB’s. Goldschmidt has a decent matchup against the right-handed Keyvius Sampson of the Cincinnati Reds and comes into his matchup coming off his first start of the season against the Pirates in which he gave up 3 runs on 3 hits (1 homerun) in 5 innings. When you looks at Goldschmidt’s splits, they are all very impressive and against RHP, Goldschmidt has posted a .322 average and .989 OPS. Goldschmidt has been a monster at home this season as he is hitting .325 and posting a 1.054 and as he faces a rookie pitcher today, I think Goldschmidt could be in for a big night.
Second Base – Kolten Wong – St. Louis Cardinals
Kolten Wong is having a decent season with the St. Louis Cardinals as he is hitting .268 with 11 homeruns, 46 RBI’s and 11 SB. Wong is hitting just .130 over the past week and although he hasn’t done anything eye-popping against the right-handed Wily Peralta of the Brewers, I think Wong is still a great value pick today at a cheap price tag of just $2800. Wong has been solid against right-hand pitching on the season as he is currently hitting .285 and has hit 10 of his 11 homeruns against RHP. Peralta has struggled this season s eh is currently posting a 4.55 ERA and 1.50 WHIP and was hit real hard in his recent outing against the Padres as he give up 6 runs on 8 hits in just 3.1 IP. Peralta is allowing LHB to post a .297 average and .892 OPS against him on the season. Wong has collected hits in 3 of his last 4 games and as he has enough power to get us a homerun tonight, he is a good pick for this Saturday night.
Shortstop – Erick Aybar – Los Angeles Angels
Erick Aybar is hitting .275 on the season with 2 homeruns, 25 RBI’s and 8 SB and as he has had great success against Ubaldo Jimenez of the Baltimore Orioles, I’m going to roll with the veteran shortstop today. Aybar has a monster July hitting .337 and is hitting .429 (6-14) with a homerun against the right-handed Jimenez in his career. Jimenez has struggled with the current Angels roster as he is currently allowing the Angels hitters to post a .300 average against him in 120 total AB’s. Jimenez has allowed 6 or more ER’s in three of his last four starts and as Aybar is hitting 6th, behind some very powerful bats that can get on base, I think he is a great pick on Saturday night.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
Todd Frazier is hitting .261 on the season but has been a fantasy monster as the slugging third baseman has collected 27 homeruns and 68 RBI’s on the season. Frazier has been in a mini-slump as of late as he is hitting just .080 (2-15) over his past week, however, his recent struggles are our gain tonight as his price tag is ridiculously low tonight with him going against a LHP. Frazier will be going up against the left-handed Robbie Ray of the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight and although he hasn’t faced Ray yet in his career, he is posting a .272 average, .670 slugging percentage, and .973 OPS against left-handed pitching on the season. Frazier has hit an incredible 11 homeruns in just 103 AB’s vs. LHP on the season and as you can get him for just $3200 tonight, you would be crazy not to.
Outfield – Bryce Harper – Washington Nationals
Even with going with Goldschmidt and Frazier, I will be able to load up on my outfield tonight and it begins with Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. Harper is having an incredible season as he is currently hitting .334 with 29 homeruns and 69 RBI’s. Harper will have a great matchup against the right-handed Eddie Butler of the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Harper hasn’t faced Butler in his career however, has been a monster against RHP on the season as he has posted a .339 average and 1.159 OPS against righties. Butler has really struggled on the season as he currently has a 5.45 ERA and 1.79 WHIP and is allowing LHB’s to post a .343 average and 1.039 OPS against him on the season. Harper is hitting .340 at home this season and as he has hit .391 over the past week, I think Harper is a must play tonight.
Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels
I really like the fact that after I get Bryce Harper in my lineup that I can sit here and still be able to take Mike Trout. Trout is hitting .306 with a league-leading 33 homeruns and 39 RBI’s on the season and although he is hitting just .130 over the past week, he is still a great option for your outfield tonight. Trout will be up against the right-handed Ubaldo Jimenez in which he has posted a .333 (3-9) average against him in his career. Trout has fared well against RHP on the season as he has posted a .304 average and 1.019 OPS. Trout has a .989 OPS at home this season and as I mentioned above in the Aybar write-up about how Jimenez has been struggling as of late, he is a great pick for your lineups tonight.
Outfield – Clint Robinson – Washington Nationals
Obviously, going with Trout and Harper with my first two OF spots will leave my budget pretty light for my last pick of the day, however, I’m going to go back to Washington and go with Clint Robinson of the Nationals largely due to his great matchup against the right-handed Eddie Butler of the Colorado Rockies. Robinson is hitting .264 on the season with 5 homeruns and 21 RBI’s and I expect him to be in the lineup tonight due to how awful Butler has been against LHB’s on the season. Robinson certainly has enough power to belt a few homeruns and this could be good news for Robinson owners today as Butler has allowed 12 homeruns in 69.1 IP this season. Butler has allowed 29 hits in his last 20.1 IP and if Robinson gets the start today, I imagine he’ll have plenty of chances w/ RISP as I see the Nationals making it a long day for Butler and the Rockies.
