Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/18/15

Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 8/18/15

USA TODAY Sports

Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!

Pitcher – Jacob DeGrom – New York Mets

Jason DeGrom has been lights out in the month of August and on the season, is currently is posting a 2.03 ERA and 0.89 WHIP while striking out 152 batters in 146.2 IP. DeGrom price tag on FanDuel is as high, but I still feel he is showing enough value against the Baltimore Orioles that it’s worth the investment today. Baltimore is currently 5th in MLB in total strikeouts against RHP and although the Orioles are hitting .256 as a team this season, the current Baltimore roster in their limited experience against DeGrom are hitting only .160 (4-25) with 9 K’s. DeGrom currently has a 9.3 K/9 ratio and has as strikeout rate of 26.86% which ranks 9th among qualified MLB starters. DeGrom is holding opposing hitters to a .197 average and .239 OBP on the season. DeGrom hasn’t allowed more than 2 ER’s in each of his last six starts and has racked up 50 strikeouts in that span and I think he’ll once again have a dominant outing tonight against the Orioles.

Catcher – Kyle Schwarber – Chicago Cubs

Kyle Schwarber has come through on all the promise he had shown down in the minors as the rookie catcher for the Cubs is hitting .313 with 8 8 homeruns and 27 RBI’s in just 34 games played this season. Schwarber is only hitting .250 over the past week but does have 3 homeruns, 10 RBI’s, and 10 BB’s in the span and is still hitting a solid .298 in the month of August. Schwarber will be up against the right-handed Anibal Sanchez of the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday in which he has yet to face in his young career. Sanchez is having an off year coming into the match-up with a 4.95 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the season. Sanchez has been tough on LHB’s this season however, Schwarber is such a pure hitter, Sanchez’s reverse platoon splits don’t overly concern me. Sanchez has had a ton of trouble keeping the ball in the ball park as he has given up an incredible 28 homeruns in his 24 games this season. Schwarber has posted a .338 average and 1.057 OPS against RHP on the season and I think he is safe option to roll at your catchers position tonight.

First Base – Yonder Alonso – San Diego Padres

Yonder Alonso has an interesting weekend as he had to miss Sunday’s game due to his own teammate (Justin Upton) throwing his helmet down in anger which ricocheted off the first baseman’s head. If you have seen it, you take a look. Alonso was back in the line-up on Monday showing no ill effects from the minor head injury as he went 2 for 4 with a double and homerun and is now hitting .274 on the season with 5 homeruns and 28 RBI’s. I’m going with Alonso tonight as I need to save some money at the position and I really like his matchup against the right-handed Matt Wisler of the Atlanta Braves. Wisler comes into this matchup with a 4.74 ERA and 1.51 WHIP and has been hit extremely hard by LHB’s on the season. LHB’s have posted a .349 (38-109) average, .418 OBP, .606 Slugging Percentage, and a 1.024 OPS against him on the season. Alonso has been a bit better against RHP on the season and as he has 80% of his homeruns against RHP on the season, I think he is a great value play at the position tonight.

Second Base – Hernan Perez – Milwaukee Brewers

If you regular read my article, you know I went with a Brewers stack last night that somewhat backfired. Well, I will warn you know that the rest of my article after Hernan Perez is going to look similar against as I like Brewers to have a better offensive showing against another weak LHP in Miami’s Adam Conley. I’m going with Hernan Perez tonight who comes into this matchup with a .231 average with 1 homerun and 9 RBI’s on the season. Conley comes into this matchup with a 5.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP and hasn’t looked overly impressive in his two starts with Miami this season. Perez has been far better against LHP on the season posting a .262 average and .733 OPS. Perez is certainly a risk and we’ll have to double-check to make sure he gets another start tonight, however, he is facing a LHP and I’m going to stack the same Brewers as I did last night, he could be a nice option for the cheap $2200 price tag.

Shortstop – Jean Segura – Milwaukee Brewers

Hernan Perez and Jean Segura certainly doesn’t sound like a winning formula for my middle infielders tonight, but here me out at least. Segura came through for us somewhat last night going 2 for 5 with a double and as he is hitting at the top of the lineup against LHP, he is decent option for the cost of $2200. On the season, Segura is hitting .258 with 4 homeruns, 34 RBI’s, and 18 SB on the season and has collected at least one hit in 4 of his last 5 games. Against LHP on the season, Segura is hitting an impressive .309 (29-94) and has only strikeout 8.5% of the time against lefties which shows he is making decent contact. Conley is allowing opposing hitters to have a .273 average and .329 OBP against him on the season and after seeing him give up 8 hits in just 4.2 innings in his recent start against the Red Sox, I think Segura is worth another start tonight.

Third Base – Trevor Plouffe – Minnesota Twins

I’ve been usually backing Miguel Sano recently at my 3B position, but as the Twins are up against the left-handed CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees, I’m going with equally hot hitting Trevor Plouffe tonight as he is a bit more affordable and is hitting LHP’s better than Sano. Plouffe is hitting .251 on the season with 18 homeruns and 65 RBI’s and has been hot over his last few days going 5 for 9 with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI’s. Plouffe has a good matchup against Sabathia who comes into tonight’s contest with a 5.23 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Sabathia has been getting hit hard against RHB’s on the season as he has allowed RHB’s to post a .329 average and .902 OPS against him. Plouffe has some experience against Sabathia in which is hitting .267 with a homerun in 15 AB’s. Plouffe has a .492 slugging percentage and .828 OPS against LHP’s on the season and I think he’ll have a good chance to hit another homerun at Yankee Stadium tonight.

Outfield – Ryan Braun – Milwaukee brewers

Ryan Braun is hitting .275 with 21 homeruns, 71 RBI’s and 18 SB’s on the season and as he is once against facing a very hittable lefty in Miami’s Adam Conley, I’m rolling with him again for the second straight day. Braun didn’t have a bad game for us last night as he went 2 for 3 with a BB and RBI but I was expecting a bit more in the terms of power against Justin Nicolino. As I mentioned above, Conley comes into this matchup with a 5.00 ERA and 1.28 WHIP and looked awful hittable when I saw him throw against the Red Sox in his recent start. Braun is posting a .310 average and .946 OPS against LHP on the season and has posted a .331 average and 1.029 OPS against lefties over the past three seasons. Braun is hitting .333 so far in the month of August and I expect a big game out of the right-fielder tonight.

Outfield – Kris Davis – Milwaukee Brewers

Not much has changed in regards of my write-up for Kris Davis since yesterday:

“Sticking with my Brewers stack tonight, I’m going to take my chances on Kris Davis tonight who enters tonight’s contest with a .238 average with 12 homeruns and 36 RBI’s. Davis is only hitting .245 so far in the month of August, but has been hitting for power as he has 5 homeruns and 14 RBI’s so far in the month. Davis has struggled against LHP on this season but has posted a .839 OPS against LHP over his past three seasons.”

Davis has fared well at Miller Park this season posting a .295 average and .986 OPS on the season and as he is facing lefty tonight in a good hitter’s ballpark, I think he is once again a great option to stack with Braun any other Brewers tonight.

Outfield – Seth Smith – Seattle Mariners

Seth Smith is hitting .252 with 9 homeruns and 29 RBI’s on the season and I imagine that he will be getting the start tonight in the left-field for the Mariners as they are up against the right-handed Chi Chi Gonzalez of the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.  Smith has struggled in August as he is hitting just .156 and has seen his playing time decrease a bit as of late as Seattle has gone with Franklin Gutierrez when going against LHP, but Smith is still a solid option as he has a .775 OPS against RHP on the season. Smith has yet to face Chi Chi Gonzalez in his career, but should be able to handle the righty as he comes into this matchup giving up at least 5 ER’s in 3 of his last 4 games. Gonzalez is a groundball dependent pitcher who although is holding opposing batters to just a .221 average, has given up 10 hits, 7 BB’s and 11 runs in his last 7.1 IP. Smith has some good pop in his bat and as I feel Seattle will have some good success against Gonzalez tonight, I like having Smith batting in the 5th spot of the batting order tonight.
