Daily Fantasy Baseball – 8/21/15
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Chris Sale – Chicago White Sox
I’m going with Chris Sale as my pitcher today as the left-hander currently is spotting a 3.32 ERA & 1.04 WHIP and has a decent matchup going against the Seattle Mariners on Friday night. Sale has had a few rocky starts as of late, but his most recent start was a masterpiece as he went 7.0 innings giving up no runs on just 1 hit while striking out 15 against the Cubs last Sunday. Sale has an incredible 208 strikeouts on the season and currently has an 11.9 K/9 ratio and a strikeout percentage of 32.76% which leads MLB starters. Seattle comes into this matchup with the 4th most strikeouts in MLB and a team strikeout percentage of 21.6%. On the season, Seattle is ranked 24th in MLB with a .243 team batting average. Sale is holding the currently Seattle roster to a .230 batting average and as he is 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA against Seattle in 4 starts over the past three years, I think he is the best option for tonight.
Catcher – Victor Martinez – Detroit Tigers
Victor Martinez has had a rough season with the Tigers as he is currently hitting just .249 (career .303 hitter) with 9 homeruns and 53 RBI’s. Martinez has been picking up a bit as of late as he is hitting .333 over the past week with 3 doubles and 5 RBI’s and I’m going with him tonight as I like his matchup against the right-handed Colby Lewis of the Texas Rangers. In his career against Lewis, Martinez has posted a .529 (9-17) average and 1.235 OPS. Lewis comes into this matchup with a 4.49 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. Lewis has struggled against the Tigers lineup as the current Tigers roster is hitting .347 against him. Martinez
First Base – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks
Paul Goldschmidt is not having a great week as he is hitting just .167 over the past week however, the recent performance isn’t going to keep away from him especially when he is going up against the left-handed David Holmberg of the Cincinnati Reds. On the season, Goldschmidt is hitting .329 with 22 homeruns, 89 RBI’s and 19 SB’s. Holmberg comes into this matchup struggling this season as he currently is posting a 5.95 ERA and 1.58 WHIP and recently got rocked giving up 7 runs on 5 hits (3 homeruns) in just 2.0 innings against the Dodgers last Saturday. Holmberg is allowing RHB’s to post a .275 average, .549 slugging percentage, and a .916 OPS against him. Goldschmidt has a .358 average and 1.082 OPS against LHP on the season and I think tonight will be the night that Goldschmidt breaks out of his recent slump.
Second Base – Chris Owings – Arizona Diamondbacks
I’m going to stay in Arizona and try to ride the hot hand of the Diamondbacks Chris Owings who is coming off a nice 3-4 performance with a double and homerun last night against the Reds. Owings is hitting just .234 with 4 homeruns and 34 RBI’s but as I need to save some money at the position tonight, I think he good value at the $2200 price tag. Owings will be up against the struggling David Holmberg of the Cincinnati Reds which I mentioned above has struggled against RHB’s on the season. Owings is currently posting a .308 average and .923 OPS against Cincinnati this season and although it’s hard to expect another huge night from Owings, I think he will be able to get us a few hits tonight.
Shortstop – Eugenio Suarez – Cincinnati Reds
I’ve gone with Eugenio Suarez a few times as of late and he has paid off as the shortstop is hitting .305 with 8 homeruns and 32 RBI’s since replacing the injured Zack Cozart. Cozart has been hot as of late as over his past three games he is hitting .429 over his past three games with a double and homerun. Suarez will be up against the right-handed Rubby De La Rosa who comes into this matchup with a 4.40 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. De La Rosa has been solid against RHB’s on the season however, he is prone to giving up homeruns as he has allowed 25 homeruns in his 149.1 IP this season. Suarez is hitting .301 against RHP on the season and currently has a .467 (7 for 15) average against Arizona. I’m surprised that Suarez is only priced at $2700 and will hope he can deposit a De La Rosa fastball into the seats tonight.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
I’m going to stick with Todd Frazier against as the value for the price is just too good to pass up. As I mentioned yesterday Frazier has really struggled since the All-Star break and is currently hitting .169 in the month of August. On the season, Frazier is hitting .257 with 29 homeruns and 73 RBI’s. Frazier will be up against the right-handed Ruby De La Rosa of the Arizona Diamondback which I mentioned above has been prone to giving the HR ball. Frazier has been solid at Great American Ball Park this season posting a .284 average and .921 OPS. De La Rosa has struggled more on the road this season posting a 4.66 ERA while giving up 15 homeruns in 12 away starts, and although Frazier is continuing to struggle, I can’t past up on his power at a price tag of just $2800.
Outfield – Marlon Byrd – San Francisco Giants
With Hunter Pence going back on the DL for the Giants, they recently acquired Marlon Byrd from the Cincinnati Reds to help with their outfield depth. I’m going with Byrd tonight as although the outfielder is hitting just .237 on the season, he is hitting 19 homeruns and 42 RBI’s. Byrd has a good matchup against the left-handed Jeff Locke of the Pittsburgh Pirates in which in his career has posted a .357 average and 1.232 OPS. Byrd has fared well against LHP on the season as he has posted a .280 average and .844 OPS against lefties on the season. Byrd certainly can easily go 0-4 but as he should get his first start for the Giants tonight, I think he is going to go deep against Locke and show the Giants management that he was a good pickup.
Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds
Similar to Todd Frazier, Jay Bruce has really struggled as of late as the right-fielder is hitting just .100 over the past week and .238 on the season. Bruce is still a player to look at however as he does have 18 homeruns, 65 RBI’s and 7 SB on the season and hits right in the middle of a Cincinnati lineup that can put up some runs. Bruce is up against Rubby De La Rosa of the Arizona Diamondbacks who has struggled against LHB’s on the season allowing LHB to post a .309 average and .928 OPS against him. Bruce has been better at home this season posting a .250 average and .823 OPS and as 15 of his 18 homeruns have come against RHP’s on the season, I’m going to take a chance that Bruce can go deep tonight.
Outfield – Yasmany Tomas – Arizona Diamondbacks
If you haven’t noticed, the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Cincinnati Reds game is a big one for me tonight as I’ve stacked hitters on both teams for my lineup tonight. This continues as I’m going to go with Yasmany Tomas as I expect the right-fielder to get the start tonight against the left-handed David Holmberg of the Cincinnati Reds. Tomas is hitting .298 on the season with 7 homeruns, 42 RBI’s and 5 SB. I’ve talked about Holmberg a bit above and in his limited starts, he has really struggled against RHB’s, allowing them to post a .549 slugging percentage and .916 OPS. Tomas is hitting .282 and has .773 OPS against LHP on the season and as Great American Ball Park is decent spot of right-handed hitters, I think Tomas is showing decent value at a price tag of just $2400 on Friday night.
