Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
USA TODAY Sports
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Stephen Strasburg – Washington Nationals
Stephen Strasburg comes into tonight’s matchup with subpar season numbers posting a 4.22 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, however the right-hander has pitched great in his three starts since returning from the DL and will be my pick tonight as he is faces a San Diego Padres team that strikeouts a lot. Strasburg is still striking out hitters as he is currently posting a 9.8 K/9 ratio and a strikeout percentage of 25.1%. San Diego comes into this matchup with the 4th highest strikeout total in the league and has a team strikeout percentage of 22.0%. Strasburg is holding the current Padres roster to a .229 average and has 36 K’s in 105 AB’s. Strasburg has given up only 3 ER’s in his last 20 IP while striking out 25 batters in that time period. In the month of August Strasburg has a 1.35 ERA and 0.70 WHIP and will the potential of hitting double-digit K’s tonight, I think he is the best option to go with tonight.
Catcher – Travis D’Arnaud – New York Mets
I’m going with Travis D’Arnaud as the Met’s catcher has looked good in the past week hitting .286 with 3 doubles, 2 homeruns and 6 RBI’s and is currently hitting .272 with 8 homeruns and 25 RBI’s in 36 games played this season. The Mets bats exploded last night for a franchise record 8 homeruns and they have a good chance of having good success at the plate against tonight as they face the very hittable right-handed Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies. Williams comes into this matchup with a 6.10 ERA and 1.67 WHIP and was rocked in his recent start giving up 8 runs on 8 hits and 4 BB’s in just 1.2 IP against the Miami Marlins. Williams us currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .327 average and .885 OPS against him while also giving up 20 homeruns in 100.1 IP on the season. D’Arnaud has fared better against LHP on the season however does have 6 of his 8 homeruns against RHP and as Williams is just not that great of a MLB pitcher, I like D’Arnaud tonight.
First Base – Adam Lind – Milwaukee Brewers
Adam Lind is having a great first season with the Milwaukee Brewers as the first baseman is hitting .284 with 17 homeruns and 67 RBI’s. Lind has had a hot bat as of late as he is hitting .400 over the past week and has a decent matchup against the right-handed Josh Tomlin of the Cleveland Indians this Tuesday. Tomlin comes in posting a decent 2.03 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in his first two starts of the season after returning from injury however, this is a pitcher with a career 4.80 ERA and 1.23 WHIP and has given up 3 homeruns in his 13.1 IP so far this season. Lind has crushed RHP on the season as he is posting a .301 average, .522 slugging percentage, and a .905 OPS. Lind is 2 for 5 against Tomlin in his career and I feel that he will continue his hot hitting in Cleveland tonight.
Second Base – Kelly Johnson – New York Mets
Kelly Johnson is hitting .258 with 11 homeruns and 39 RBI’s on the season and is a great value pick at the second base position on Monday as he is facing off against the right-handed Jerome Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies. Johnson should be getting the start tonight for the Mets as in his career against Williams he has posted a .360 (9-25) average. As mentioned in D’Arnaud’s write-up, Williams is basically still lucky to have a rotation spot for the Phillies as he is posting a 6.10 ERA and 1.67 WHIP. Williams is allowing LHB’s to post a .315 average and .778 OPS against him on the season. Williams currently has a 6.68 ERA during night games and a 5.73 ERA against the Mets this season. Johnson certainly has enough pop in his bat to get us a homerun tonight and as he is hitting .300 against the Phillies in 2015, he is good option for a cost of just $2400.
Shortstop – Wilmer Flores – New York Mets
I really wanted to stay away from Flores tonight after his monster night last night, but as his price tag is still very reasonable ($2700) and he is up against Jerome Williams, I’m going to hope the Flores didn’t use up all his hits in last night’s game. Flores comes into tonight’s game with a .265 average with 14 homeruns and 54 RBI’s and has been great over the past week hitting .444 with 3 doubles, 3 homeruns and 10 RBI’s. For the month August, Flores is posting a .338 average, .585 slugging percentage, and a .962 OPS. The right-handed Jerome Williams has really had his difficulties against RHB’s on the season as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .336 average, .597 slugging percentage, and .960 OPS. Flores was 3 for 6 last night with 2 homeruns and a double and although I certainly don’t expect that type of production tonight, he does have the right matchup to put another one in the outfield seats tonight.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
Todd Frazier might be struggling hitting homeruns as of late but when he is priced at just $2700 and going up against a LHP, I just don’t see how you can pass up on him. On the season Frazier is hitting .260 with 29 homeruns and 74 RBI’s and although he only has a .204 average with 4 homeruns since the All-Star game, Frazier is starting to swing the bat better as of late as he has collected at least one hit in 5 of his last 6 games. Frazier will be up against the left-handed Alex Wood of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday who comes into tonight’s matchup with a 3.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP. Wood has struggled a bit against RHB’s on the season as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .297 average and .787 OPS against him. Frazier has an incredible .667 slugging percentage and .966 OPS against LHB’s on the season. Frazier has been much better at home this season hitting .289 with 16 of his 29 homeruns and it will be only time until Frazier starts to regular hit them out of the park again.
Outfield – Charlie Blackmon – Colorado Rockies
Charlie Blackmon is one of my favorite players in MLB as he has the ability to do basically anything on a baseball field. Blackmon comes into tonight’s matchup with a .292 average with 15 homeruns, 49 RBI’s and 33 SB’s on the season and has a decent matchup against the right-handed Mike Foltynewicz of the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Foltynewicz comes into the game with a 6.06 ERA and 1.65 WHIP and has struggled in August posting a 9.00 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 4 starts. Foltynewicz is allowing LHB’s to post a .337 average, .604 slugging percentage and .984 OPS on the season. Foltynewicz has also struggled with the HR ball as he has allowing 17 HR’s in just 81.2 IP on the season. Blackmon is hitting .310 with 12 of his homeruns and 26 of his SB’s against RHP on the season and I expect him to have a big night tonight in Atlanta.
Outfield – Rusney Castillo – Boston Red Sox
Rusney Castillo has a slow start to his MLB career, however the right-fielder out of Cuba has been great as of late as he is hitting .500 (9-18) over the past week and has a .391 average with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR’s and 18 RBI’s so far in the month of August. On the season, Castillo is hitting .305 with 5 homeruns and 25 RBI’s and has a decent matchup tonight against the left-handed Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox. Quintana has pitched well as of late and comes into tonight’s game with a 3.60 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. Quintana has struggled a bit against RHB’s on the season as he has allowed RHB’s to post a .296 average and .782 OPS against him. Castillo has been great against basically anyone recently, however, has really fared well against LHP as he is posting a .370 average, .574 slugging percentage and .978 OPS. In his career against Quintana, Castillo is 1 for 3 with a double and I’m hoping that he can improve on these numbers in Chicago tonight.
Outfield – Carlos Gomez – Houston Astros
Similar to Todd Frazier, Carlos Gomez has too much value at a price tag of just $2800 to pass up, especially when we spend a lot of money at the pitching position. Gomez is hitting .244 on the season with 9 homeruns and 47 RBI’s and although he has struggled since being acquired by the Houston Astros, he still has a decent matchup against the right-handed Ian Nova on Tuesday. Nova comes into this matchup with a 3.72 ERA and 1.24 WHIP and has given up at least 3 ER’s in each of his last three games. Gomez has been much better on the road this season posting a .266 average and .703 OPS. Gomez is a much better hitter vs. RHP as on the season he is hitting .253 vs. RHP compared to a .208 average vs. LHP. Over his last three seasons Gomez has a .288 average vs. RHP and has hit .364 (4-11) vs. the New York Yankees. Gomez is still hitting in the middle of the Astros lineup and he does have a good combination of both speed and power, it will be only time in which he goes he has a big game for his new ball club.
