USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – Lance McCullers – Houston Astros
Lance McCullers returning to the mound after a short trip to the minors and looked outstanding against the Dodgers last Sunday going 7 innings giving up just 2 runs while striking out 8. On the season McCullers has been a nice surprise for the Astros as in his 15 starts, the right hander has posted a 3.12 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 87 batters in 83.2 IP. McCullers currently is sporting a solid 9.4 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 25.07%. McCullers will be up against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday who are hitting just .244 (ranked 24th in MLB) against RHP on the season and are hitting just .227 over the past week. Outside of one rocky start against the Texas early in the month, McCullers has been pretty consistent throughout the season and as he does have an arsenal that can get K’s, he is a great play today for a cost of just $6700.
Catcher – Victor Martinez – Detroit Tigers
Victor Martinez and the Detroit Tigers look like a team that is just counting the days until the 2015 season is over and although the career .302 hitter is hitting just .238 on the season, I’m going with Martinez tonight as he has had great success against the left-handed Mark Buehrle in his career. Martinez does have 9 HR’s and 53 RBI’s on the season and in his career against Buehrle he is hitting .359 (28-78) with 4 HR’s and 15 RBI’s. Buehrle has been solid for the Blue Jays coming in with a 3.60 ERA and 1.18 WHIP but has been hit hard his last two games giving up a combined 9 ER’s on 14 hits in just 10 IP. Buehrle is allowing RHB’s to have a .271 average and .726 OPS against him on the season. Martinez has actually fared well as a RHB on the season hitting .354 and posting a .876 OPS in 82 AB’s and I hope Martinez can continue his success against Buehrle tonight.
First Base – Ryan Zimmerman – Washington Nationals
Ryan Zimmerman has been hot as of late as over the past week he is hitting .286 with 3 HR’s and 11 RBI’s and although Zimmerman is hitting just .225 on the season, he has a great matchup against the left-handed Brad Hand of the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Zimmerman missed a good chunk of June and July this season due to injury but has started to perform better since the All-Star break as he is hitting.260 with 7 HR’s and 25 RBI’s. Brad Hand comes into this matchup with a 4.23 ERA and 1.28 WHIP on the season and is currently allowing RHB’s to have a .300 average and .764 OPS against him on the season. Hand has had troubles on the road this season as in his 4 starts he is posting a 7.28 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. Zimmerman has had great success against Hand in his career as he is hitting .750 (6-8) with 4 doubles. Zimmerman has a .273 average and .852 OPS against LHP on the season and for the reasonable price of $3400, I hope he continues his hot hitting as of late.
Second Base – Anthony Rendon – Washington Nationals
Similar to his teammate Ryan Zimmerman, Rendon has had been hot as of late and has had great success against the left-handed Brad Hand of the Miami Marlins and will once again be my selection at second base on Sunday. Rendon is hitting just .267 on the season with 3 HR’s and 14 RBI’s however, is hitting .375 (9-24) with HR and 5 RBI’s over the past week and currently has a 7 game hitting streak. In his career against Hand, Rendon is hitting .455 (5-11) with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. Rendon has been great against LHP’s as on the season he is posting a .333 (13-39) average and .751 OPS. Hand has really struggled on the road this season and as the Washington Nationals need wins to keep pace with the Mets in the NL East, I see Washington having a nice day at the plate on Sunday.
Shortstop – Troy Tulowitzki – Toronto Blue Jays
Troy Tulowitzki hasn’t been anything more than average since being acquired by the Blue Jays as the trade deadline however, due to this, his price tag has lowered to just $3700 and as he is facing a below average pitcher in Detroit’s Alfredo Simon, he is going to be my pick at SS today. Tulowitzki is hitting .282 on the season with 16 HR’s and 64 RBI’s but is only hitting .227 with 4 HR’s and 11 RBI’s for the Blue Jays. Simon comes into this matchup with a 4.89 ERA and 1.43 WHIP and hasn’t been that good since the All-Star break posting a 5.74 ERA in7 starts. Simon has a decent slider which is tough on RHB’s but as evident which his recent outing against the Angels, RHB’s are currently getting their hits of him. In his career Tulowitzki is hitting .400 (2 for 5) against Simon and as Tulowitzki is leading off for the Blue Jays, this helps give him a little extra value.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – Cincinnati Reds
Todd Frazier finally connected for a HR last night (while he was on my team) and although I know I’ve been a broken record with Frazier this week, he is going to be on my team against today as his price tag is still ridiculously low and is facing off a very hittable right-hander in Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta. On the season Frazier is now hitting .264 with 30 HR’s and 77 RBI’s and has been solid over the past week hitting .276 with 2 doubles and a HR. Peralta is coming in with a 4.55 ERA and 1.52 WHIP and hasn’t fared well as of late as in his last two starts he has lasted just 7.2 innings giving up 8 ER on 15 hits and 5 BB’s. The Brewers were concerned that Peralta is dealing with a “dead arm” issue but at this time it still looks as if he is going to get a start today. Frazier is hitting .300 at Miller Park this season with 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s and I think he’ll be able to deposit another ball into the seats tonight against Peralta.
Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout price tag is at an all-time low level at just $4100 and although the MVP Trout has struggled recently, he is still putting up a .292 average with 33 HR’s, 73 RBI’s and 10 SB. Trout an intriguing matchup against Josh Tomlin who will be making his 4th start of the season after missing the majority of the season due to a shoulder injury. Tomlin has an interesting stat line in his although he has pitched well giving up just 12 hits in his first three starts, 6 of those hits have been for HR’s. Tomlin might be posting a 3.26 ERA and 0.72 WHIP as of today, however this is a pitcher with a career 4.82 ERA and is currently allowing the Angels roster to hit .340 (16-47) against him in his career. Trout is only hitting .263 with no HR’s over the past week but as he is still hitting.289 with 25 HR’s against RHP, I can see Trout breaking out of his slump with a big game on Sunday.
Outfield – Jose Bautista – Toronto Blue Jays
Jose Bautista has been getting on base at a crazy rate as of late as over his last four games, Bautista is 3 for 9 with a HR and an amazing 10 walks. Bautista is hitting just .244 on the season but is still showing his great power as he has collected 31 HR’s and 88 RBI’s on the season. Bautista will be up against the right-handed Alfredo Simon of the Detroit Tigers this afternoon in which in his career he is hitting .375 (3-8) with a HR and 5 RBI’s against. Bautista has been good at the Rodgers Centre this season hitting .257 and posting a .959 OPS and has even been better during day games hitting .278 and posting a .974 OPS. Bautista has actually hit better against RHP’s on the season and as 27 of his 31 HR’s have been against RHP, I’m not hesitant to pay the big bucks to get Bautista on my team today.
Outfield – Jay Bruce – Cincinnati Reds
Jay Bruce is hitting just .233 on the season but has collected 19 HR’s and 72 RBI’s on the season and showed us once against last night (3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI’s) that he has the ability to put up big fantasy games at any moment. I’m going with Bruce on Sunday as he is facing another below average right-handed pitcher in Milwaukee’s Wily Peralta who is allowing LHB’s to hit .297 against him and post a .875 OPS. Bruce hasn’t had much success against Peralta in his career as he is hitting just .200 (4-20) against him, but one of those hits has been a HR. Bruce is doing much better against RHP’s this season as he has a .471 slugging % and .784 OPS and as he his more HR’s against Brewers this season than any other opponents, I’m hoping he can have a repeat his performance from last night this afternoon.
