Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Yordano Ventura – Kansas City Royals
Yordano Ventura has been lights out over his last five starts and is currently posting a 4.24 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while striking out 118 batters in 127.1 IP. Over his past five starts, Ventura has allowed just 4 ER’s in 32 IP while striking out 43 batters. Ventura has a decent matchup against the Minnesota Twins who rank 28th in MLB with a .243 average against RHP on the season. Minnesota does a decent job avoiding strikeouts as they have a strikeout percentage of just 21.3% but with the way Ventura has been pitching, I’m not overly concerned about this. Ventura has been one of the best pitchers in the last month and if he has his command going tonight, I see another strong performance with at least 7 innings, 6-10 K’s and a win.
Catcher – Salvador Perez – Kansas City Royals
Salvador Perez is hitting .255 on the season but is going to be my pick today as the 4 year veteran has 19 HR’s and 58 RBI’s. Perez is hitting .294 with a HR and 3 RBI’s over the past week and has a decent matchup against the LHP Tommy Milone of the Minnesota Twins in which he is hitting .300 (6-20) in his career against. Milone has been solid this season however, is allowing RHB’s to post a .272 average and .785 OPS against him. Milone has faced the Royals three times this season and has allowed 8 ER’s over a total of 17 IP (4.24 ERA). Perez has struggled a bit more against LHP’s on the season but has been great against Minnesota posting a .292 average with a HR and 5 RBI’s. Although his stats against LHP hasn’t been great, I think Perez still has great value at just $2300.
Please Note – I’m stacking the whole Dodgers infield tonight against the Angels Nick Tropeano so I’m going to give you the pitchers stats right now so I don’t keep repeating myself. Tropeano is making his 4th start of the season and is being called upon to make a spot start due to Mike Shoemaker’s forearm injury. Tropeano is currently posting a 5.51 ERA on the season with a 1.41 WHIP and is allowing opposing batters to hit .313 against him on the season. Tropeano is allowing both LHB and RHB to hit .313 against him while allowing LHB’s to post a .767 OPS. Tropeano pitched well in his first start against Oakland but struggled in his two recent outings against Texas and the White Sox.
First Base – Adrian Gonzalez – Los Angeles Dodgers
Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .279 on the season but has shown some great power as has 26 HR’s and 81 RBI’s. Gonzalez is hitting .275 against RHB and has posted a .863 OPS as 22 of his 26 HR’s are coming against righties. Gonzalez has hit 2 HR’s in the past week and I think he can certainly have a good game against the Angels tonight.
Second Base – Chase Utley – Philadelphia Phillies
Chase Utley is hitting just .223 on the season with 7 HR’s and 34 RBI’s but has been on fire as of late hitting .357 with 2 HR’s and 3 RBI’s over the past week. Utley is hitting a bit better against RHB’s on the season, posting a .229 average and .675 OPS. Utley is hitting .337 since the All-Star Break and with his recent hot hitting, is a good play tonight at 2B
Shortstop – Corey Seager – Los Angeles Dodgers
Corey Seager, brother of Seattle’s 3B Kyle Seager, was recently called up by the Dodgers last Thursday and has done well in his first few starts hitting .333 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s. Seager with the overall best prospect at the time of his call-up and although the data sample is small for the majors, Seager was hitting .278 with 13 HR’s in 105 games with the Dodgers Triple-AAA team. Seager certainly has tons of talents and with an average righty on the mound tonight, I think Seager could get his first HR with the Dodgers tonight.
Third Base – Justin Turner – Los Angeles Dodgers
Turner has struggled a bit as of late hitting just .227 over the past week but is still having a great season posting a .290 average with 15 HR’s and 52 RBI’s. Turner has been great against RHP on the season posting a .317 average and .923 OPS. Turner had a solid game last night going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 runs scored.
Outfield – Lorenzo Cain – Kansas City Royals
Lorenzo Cain is having a great season as he has posted a .312 average with 14 HR’s, 64 RBI’s, and 26 SB. Cain has a great matchup against the LHP Tommy Milone as he has posted a .348 average and .993 OPS against lefties on the season. Milone is allowing RHB’s to post a .272 average and .785 OPS on the season. In his career against Milone, Cain is hitting .278 (5-18) with a HR and 3 RBI’s. Cain is hitting .316 over the past week with 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s and .341 against the Twins on the season. Cain is hitting .332 with 9 HR’s at Kaufmann Stadium on the season and I continue his success to continue tonight.
Outfield – Ben Zobrist – Kansas City Royals
Ben Zobrist is hitting .288 on the season with 11 HR’s and 50 RBI’s on the season and has been great since being acquired by the Royals at the trade deadline as he is hitting .326 with 5 HR’s with the Royals. Zobrist has been great against LHP on the season as he has posted a .331 average and .938 OPS. Zobrist has been a hitting machine at Kauffman Stadium this season as he is hitting .366 with a HR and 8 RBI’s in 71 AB’s. Zobrist is hitting .348 over the past week and I’m hoping that he can continue is strong hitting against tonight.
Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout has a tough matchup against Zack Greinke but as Trout is hitting .500 (5-10) with 2 triples and 4 RBI’s in his career against Greinke, I’m not hesitant going with him tonight. Trout struggled for much of August, but is still hitting .298 on the season with 34 HR’s, 76 RBI’s and 10 SB. Trout has picked it up over the past week as he is hitting .286 and did hit his first HR’s in about a month last night against the Rangers. Trout has posted a .298 average and .980 OPS against RHP on the season and I’m hoping he can continue his success against Greinke tonight.
