MLB Picks for your MLB Daily Fantasy Leagues
September 18th, 2015
Here is my lineup for tonight’s games. Please note that I’m using the salary cap based on FanDuel prices.
Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
USA TODAY Sports
Pitcher – Drew Smyly – Tampa Bay Rays
Drew Smyly has missed the majority of the season due to a shoulder injury but in his 9 starts made this year, has been very solid posting a 3.14 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Smyly has a good matchup against the Baltimore Orioles in which in early September, pitched a gem against going 7 innings giving up no runs while striking out 10. In his career against the Orioles currently roster, Smyly is allowing the Baltimore roster to hit just .143 (12-84) against him. Smyly currently is posting a 10.4 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 27.9%. Smyly is currently holding batters to just a .245 on the season and I’m hoping that he can have similar success against Baltimore as he did in his first start against them this season.
Catcher – Evan Gattis – Houston Astros
Houston needs to a win badly tonight after getting swept by the Texas Rangers and as Houston is facing a very hittable left-hander in Felix Doubront, I’m going to be stacking Houston RHB’s tonight starting with Evan Gattis. On the season, Gattis is hitting just .240 however, has shown the tremendous power that he has as he has collected 24 HR’s and 80 RBI’s on the season. Gattis has fared well as of late as over the past week he is hitting .280 (7-25) with a HR and 5 RBI’s. Doubront comes into this matchup with a 4.99 ERA and 1.53 WHIP and has given up 4 HR’s in his last 10.1 IP. Doubront is allowing RHB’s to post a .307 average and .827 OPS against him this season. Gattis has been much better at Minute Maid Park this season as he is hitting .268 with 13 HR’s and I’m hoping that he can take Doubront deep tonight.
First Base – Eric Hosmer – Kansas City Royals
I’m going to try and save a little money at first base tonight and take my changes with Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals. Hosmer is having a solid season as he is hitting .299 with 14 HR’s and 83 RBI’s however, has struggled as of late hitting just .196 so far in the month of September. Hosmer will be up against the right-handed Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers tonight who comes in with a 3.58 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. Hosmer has plenty of experience against Verlander and is hitting .262 (17-65) against him in his career with 5 doubles and a HR. Hosmer has posted a .315 average and .887 OPS against RHP’s this season and as he has a .349 (22-63) average against Detroit on the season, is worth the shot tonight at a price of just $2600.
Second Base – Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners
Robinson Cano got off to a horrendous start of the season but has had a strong showing since the All-Star break and is currently hitting .279 with 16 HR’s and 65 RBI’s on the season. Since the All-Star break, Cano is hitting .324 with 10 of his 16 HR’s and as he is facing a hittable right-hander in Yovani Gallardo of the Texas Rangers, I like Cano as my second baseman tonight. Gallardo has pitched well for the Rangers this season as he is posting a 3.35 ERA and 1.36 WHIP but was hit hard in his recent start giving up 5 runs on 7 hits (2 HR’s) in just 4.1 IP last Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. Gallardo is currently allowing LHB’s to post a .267 average and .749 OPS against him on the season. Cano is hitting .297 during night games this season and as he should have a better chance hitting for more power in Texas, is worth the investment tonight.
Shortstop – Carlos Correa – Houston Astros
Carlos Correa has been outstanding in his rookie season as in the 84 games played since being called up Correa is hitting .276 with 18 HR’s, 52 RBI’s and 12 SB. Correa has been hot as of late hitting .308 (8-26) over the past week with a HR and 4 RBI’s. Correa has a great matchup tonight against the left-handed Felix Doubront of the Oakland Athletics who enters tonight’s game with a 4.99 ERA and 1.53 WHIP. Doubront has really struggled as of late as he has given up 15 ER’s on 22 hits (4 HR’s) in his last 16.1 IP. Correa has fared well against LHP this season as he has posted a .291 average and .932 OPS. Correa is hitting .315 at home this season and as Houston and as the Astros need a win tonight, I think they’re going to have a big offensive day against Doubront and the A’s.
Third Base – Todd Frazier – St. Louis Cardinals
Todd Frazier looked like he was starting to get out of his 2nd half of the season slump a couple of weeks ago but is once again struggling as he is hitting just .200 so far in the month of September. Even with the struggles, Frazier is hitting .258 on the season and has an impressive 34 HR’s and 85 RBI’s. Frazier is hitting just .158 (3-19) over the past week but at least 2 of those 3 hits have been HR’s. Frazier has a great matchup tonight against the right-handed Zach Davies of the Milwaukee Brewers who enters tonight’s game with a 6.60 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. Davis has been getting crushed by RHB’s in his three starts this season as he is allowing RHB’s to post a .355 (11-31) average and 1.009 OPS. Frazier is hitting .254 with 20 HR’s against RHP this season and has some of the best value at third base with a cost at just $2800.
Outfield – Jose Bautista – Toronto Blue Jays
Jose Bautista is hitting just .250 on the season but has been a big part of the Toronto base brothers as he slugging right-fielder has 35 HR’s and 102 RBI’s on the season. Bautista has been solid over the past week as he is hitting .286 with 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s and has a very solid matchup against Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox tonight. Porcello has pitched better as of late but still is having a very down season as he is posting a 5.06 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Porcello is allowing opposing hitters to post a .283 average and .789 OPS against him this season as has given up a total of 24 HR’s. In his career against Porcello, Bautista has posted a .400 (10-25) average with a HR and 5 RBI’s. Bautista has actually fared better against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .254 average against RHP’s compared to a .232 average vs. LHP. Bautista has 31 of his 35 HR’s against RHP’s this season and I’m hope he can add to this total tonight against Porcello and the Red Sox.
Outfield – Mike Trout – Los Angeles Angels
The fact that Mike Trout is valued as the 21st best OF on FanDuel today make him an automatic play for me on all my teams today especially as he has a decent matchup against the right-handed Mike Pelfrey of the Minnesota Twins. On the season, Trout is hitting .294 with 38 HR’s, 83 RBI’s and 10 SB. Trout has been on fire over the past week as in that time span he is hitting .318 with 4 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Pelfrey comes into today’s matchup with a 4.09 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Pelfrey has even pretty even splits between facing RHB’s and LHB’s this season and overall, he is allowing opposing hitters to post a .297 average and .758 OPS against him. Trout has posted a .294 average and .979 OPS against RHP this season and I don’t see why he can’t go off for a big game tonight.
Outfield – George Springer – Houston Astros
With my last pick of the day, I’m going to go back to Houston and try to take advantage of their great matchup against the left-handed Felix Doubront but going with George Springer. Springer missed a good chunk of the season due to a wrist injury and is currently hitting .258 with 13 HR’s, 30 RBI’s and 14 SB. As I’ve mentioned above, Doubront has really struggled as of late and is a good matchup for the RHB’s of the Houston Astros tonight. Springer is 1 for 3 with a double against Doubront in his career and has posted a .274 average and .880 OPS against LHP’s this season. Springer has a good combination of power and speed and as he is hitting .286 over the past week, is a good choice for your lineups tonight.
