Also, as this is written the day before/morning of the games, please check the lineups and weather to ensure you have all active players going tonight and that any pitching matchups mentioned below haven’t changed. Good Luck everyone!
Pitcher – Danny Salazar – Cleveland Indians
Danny Salazar is having an outstanding season for the Indians as the hard throwing right-hander is currently posting 3.48 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out 182 batters in 168.1 IP. Salazar has a good matchup against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday as in his two starts against the Twins this season he has posted a 2.08 ERA while striking out 21 batters in just 13.0 IP. Minnesota ranks 29th in MLB with a .243 average against RHP’s on the season and 15th in MLB in total strikeouts. Salazar is currently posting a 9.7 K/9 ratio on the season and has a strikeout percentage of 26.53% which ranks 8th in MLB among qualified starters. Salazar is currently holding opposing hitters to a .224 average and .673 OPS on the season. Salazar was solid in his recent outing against the Kansas City Royals giving up just one run while striking out six in 7 IP and with his success against Minnesota on the season, is the best option when it comes to pitchers tonight.
Catcher – Francisco Cervelli – Pittsburgh Pirates
Francisco Cervelli is having a decent first season with the Pittsburgh Pirates as the veteran catcher is hitting .299 with 6 HR’s and 39 RBI’s. Cervelli is hitting .298 since the All-Star break and has a great matchup against the left-handed Chris Rusin of the Colorado Rockies. Rusin comes into the matchup with a 5.11 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the season and has really struggled since the All-Star break as has posted a 6.10 ERA in 11 starts. Rusin is allowing RHB’s to post a .308 average, .486 slugging percentage and .847 OPS against him on the season. Cervelli has been solid against LHP’s this season as he has posted a .337 average and .931 OPS. Cervelli has a big night in Colorado on Monday as he went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and with a lefty on the mound on Tuesday, he a great value play at just $2900.
First Base – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks
Paul Goldschmidt is having another great season as the slugging first baseman is currently hitting .316 with 29 HR’s, 101 RBI’s and 21 SB’s on the season. Goldschmidt has struggled a bit in September hitting just .232 however has a great matchup against the left-handed Alex Wood of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wood comes into the matchup with a 3.63 ERA and 1.37 WHIP but was crushed in his recent outing against the Diamondbacks in early September in which he gave up 8 runs (6 ER) on 8 hits in just 1.2 IP. Wood has been hit hard against RHB this season as he has allowed RHB’s to post a .291 average and .781 OPS against him. In his career against Wood, Goldschmidt has posted a .571 (4-7) average with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s. Goldschmidt is currently posting a .374 average and 1.141 OPS against LHP on the season and for a reasonable cost of $4000, should be in your lineups tonight.
Second Base – Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians
Jason Kipnis is having a rough September as he is hitting just .194 for the month but still is having a great season as he is hitting .303 with 8 HR’s, 49 RBI’s and 11 SB. Kipnis has fared better over the past week as he is hitting .308 with a HR and 3 RBI’s and he a solid option going up against the right-handed Ervin Santana of the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. Santana comes in with a 4.55 ERA and 1.37 WHIP and really struggled in his one outing against the Indians this season giving up 8 ER’s on 10 hits in just 2.1 IP. Santana has struggled a bit more against LHB’s this season as he has allowed LHB’s to post a .269 average and .840 OPS against him. Kipnis has been great against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .333 average and .901 OPS. Kipnis has collected multiple hits in three straight games and I’m hoping this success continues on Tuesday night against Santana and the Twins.
Shortstop – Addison Russell – Chicago Cubs
I need to save some money at the SS position tonight and will take my chances with Addison Russell of the Chicago Cubs who comes into the game with a .238 average with 13 HR’s and 50 RBI’s on the season. Russell has struggled as of late hitting just .211 over the past week but has a great matchup against Tyler Carvy of the Milwaukee Brewers who comes into this matchup with a 6.42 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in limited action this season. Carvy struggled in his one start against the Cubs this season giving up 4 ER’s on 4 hits and 4 BB’s in just 4.1 IP. Carvy has really struggled against RHB’s this season allowing RHB’s to post a .314 average and .868 OPS. Russell has actually fared a lot better against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .269 average and .753 OPS against righties on the season. Russell has fared much better at home on the season hitting .264 with 8 of his 13 HR’s and I’m hoping that he can have a big day against Carvy and Milwaukee on Tuesday.
Third Base – Mike Moustakas – Kansas City Royals
Mike Moustakas is hitting .279 on the season with 20 HR’s and 73 RBI’s and has displayed some solid power numbers in the month of September as he has 5 HR’s an 14 RBI’s for the month. Moustakas will be up against the right-handed Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners who comes into tonight’s game with a 3.90 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Iwakuma has been solid as of late but is allowing LHB’s to post a .266 average and .741 OPS against him on the season. In his career against Iwakuma, Moustakas has posted a .250 (2-8) average with a HR and 2 RBI’s. Moustakas has been great against RHP’s this season as against RHP’s he has posted a .290 average and .824 OPS. Moustakas has posted a .385 (5-13) average against Seattle this season and I’m hoping this success continues on Tuesday.
Outfield – Starling Marte – Pittsburgh Pirates
Starling Marte is having a solid season with the Pittsburgh Pirates as on the season he is hitting .284 with 18 HR’s, 73 RBI’s and 27 SB’s. Marte has been great as of late as the left-fielder is hitting .333 (10-30) with 2 HR’s and 5 RBI’s over the past week. Marte will be up against Chris Rusin of the Colorado Rockies who comes in with a 5.11 ERA on the season. Rusin currently has a 4.74 ERA at Coors Field this season and is allowing opposing hitters to post .308 average against him on the season. Marte has posted a .750 OPS against LHP on the season and is hitting .313 so far in the month of September. Marte has done well against Colorado this season as he is hitting .286 against the Rockies this season with a double and HR. Rusin has struggled against the Pirates as he is allowing the current Pirates roster to hit .297 against him. Rusin gave up 3 ER’s on 5 hits and 3 BB’s in his only start against Pittsburgh earlier this season and as I think the Pirates will be able to do some solid damage at Coors Field on Tuesday, I think Marte is a good option at a cost of $4200.
Outfield – Kyle Schwarber – Chicago Cubs
Kyle Schwarber has been great for the Cubs since being called up in mid-July and although the slugging catcher/outfielder is hitting just .241 on the season, he has connected for 16 HR’s and 42 RBI’s in just 59 games played this season. Schwarber has really struggled as of late as he is just 2 for his last 23 however, has a great matchup against the right-handed Tyler Carvy of the Milwaukee Brewers. Cravy comes into the matchup with a 6.42 ERA and 1.47 WHIP and has struggled against LHB’s as he has allowed LHB’s to post a .303 average and .925 OPS. Schwarber has had success against Cravy as in their earlier matchup this season, Schwarber was 1 for 2 with a solo HR and a BB. Schwarber has fared much better against RHP’s this season as he has posted a .275 average and .985 OPS. Schwarber has hit 3 HR’s against the Brewers this season and I think I he could add to this total on Tuesday night.
Outfield – Seth Smith – Seattle Mariners
I need to save some money with my last outfielder position today and going to with Seth Smith of the Seattle Mariners who is currently hitting .247 with 11 HR’s and 41 RBI’s. Smith should be getting the start on Tuesday as the Mariners will be up against the right-handed Jeremy Guthrie of the Kansas City Royals. Guthrie has really struggled this season as he has posted a 5.55 ERA and 1.52 WHIP while giving up 25 HR’s in 144.1 IP. Guthrie has really struggled against LHB’s this season as he has allowed LHB’s to post a .314 average and .901 OPS against him. In his career against Guthrie, Smith has posted an incredible .667 (6-9) average with two doubles and three RBI’s. Guthrie was hit real hard in his only start against Seattle this season giving up 6 ERs on 9 hits in just 5.0 IP. Smith has hit 10 of his 11 HR’s against RHP’s this season and I’m hoping he can continue to have success against Jeremy Guthrie on Tuesday night.
