Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice – 10/2/2015

USA TODAY Sports

Pitcher – Dallas Keuchel – Houston Astros

There are a few great starters on the hill tonight but as Houston needs a win to keep their 1 game lead over the Angels and Twins for the 2nd wildcard spot, I think Dallas Keuchel is the play tonight if you want to spend money on pitching. Keuchel has had a great season as the left-hander has posted a 2.47 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while striking out 213 batters in 226.0 IP. Keuchel will be going up against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday who rank 8th in MLB in total strikeouts and currently have a .261 average against LHP. Keuchel is currently posting an 8.5 K/9 ratio and has a strikeout percentage of 24.04%. Keuchel was solid in his only start against the Diamondbacks this season as he gave up two runs on just two hits while striking eight over 6.0 IP. Keuchel is holding opposing hitters to just a .215 batting average this season and with need of a win, I think Keuchel brings his “A” game tonight and goes at least 7 innings while getting 8-10 K’s and a win.

Catcher – Miguel Montero – Chicago Cubs

Miguel Montero has done a solid job behind the plate for the Cubs this season as the veteran catcher is currently hitting .248 with 15 HR’s and 53 RBI’s. Montero has been hitting well as of late as he has posted a .333 (4-12) average over the past week. Montero will be up against the right-handed Ariel Pena of the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night who comes into the game with a 3.91 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Pena has been decent since being called up in September as in his four starts this season he has given up just 8 ER’s over 20 IP. Pena is currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .229 average and .703 OPS against him on the season. Montero has fared better against RHP this season posting a .249 average against righties. 12 of Montero’s 15 HR’s have come against RHP this season. Montero has gotten the last two days off as I’m sure the Cubs are just giving their catcher a little rest before the playoffs, but I expect him to be in the lineup tonight and if so, is a great value play at the catchers position tonight.

First Base – Darin Ruf – Philadelphia Phillies

As I spend a lot of money with taking Keuchel as my pitcher tonight, I’m going to take a chance with Darin Ruf of the Philadelphia Phillies as I think the slugging first baseman is showing great value against a LHP for a cost of just $2500. On the season Ruf is hitting just .239 but does have 12 HR’s on the season. Ruf has been hot as of late as over the past week, he is hitting .318 (7-22) with 2 doubles and 3 HR’s. Ruf will be up against Justin Nicolino of the Miami Marlins who enters the game with a 4.16 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Nicolino is currently allowing RHB’s to post a .266 average, .462 slugging percentage and .785 OPS against him on the season. Ruf has been great against LHP’s this season as he is posting a .376 (35-93) average, .677 slugging percentage, and an incredible 1.121 OPS. Ruf has proven this season that he can hit LHP and for his price, is a great play on Friday night.

Second Base – Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners will be one of more popular stack plays on Friday as they are going against the right-handed Aaron Brooks of the Oakland Athletics and because of this, I’m going to go with Robinson Cano as my second baseman tonight. Cano had a rough start to his 2015 season but has turned it around in the 2nd half and is posting a respectable .286 average with 20 HR’s and 76 RBI’s. Cano has been red hot over the past week as he has posted a .400 (10-25) average with a HR. Brooks comes into the game with a 7.26 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 12 games played (8 starts) this season. Brooks has given up at least three ER’s in each of his last 5 starts and lasted just 2.2 innings in his recent start against the Giants after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and a BB. On the season, Cano has posted a .298 average and .824 OPS against RHP. Cano has hit over .300 in each of the last three months and as he is hitting .299 with a .469 slugging percentage at Safeco Field this season, he has some decent value for a cost of $3100 on Friday.

Shortstop – Eric Aybar – Los Angeles Angels

Eric Aybar has been one of the better value plays throughout the year at SS and as I want to save a little money for my OF position’s tonight, I’m going with Aybar on Friday. On the season, Aybar is currently hitting .269 with 2 HR’s, 43 RBI’s and 14 SB’s. Aybar has been decent as of late as he is hitting .267 (8-30) with 3 doubles, a triple and 5 RBI’s over the past week. Aybar will be up against Martin Perez of the Texas Rangers who comes into the contest posting a 4.77 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. Perez has struggled with RHB’s this season as he has allowed RHB’s to post a .316 average and .813 OPS. Aybar is a switch-hitter that has shown pretty even splits this season and is currently hitting .271 as a RHB. Aybar has posted a .274 average and .668 OPS against the Rangers on the season. Aybar will be in the lineup tonight as the Angels are still alive in the playoff hunt and as the veteran SS will either leadoff or hit 5th, it’s a good spot to be right before or after Calhoun, Pujols, and Trout.

Third Base – Kyle Seager – Seattle Mariners

Kyle Seager is having a decent season with the Mariners as the third baseman is currently posting a .272 average with 26 HR’s and 74 RBI’s. Seager had his best month of the season in September as he posted a solid .320 average, .553 slugging percentage, and a .956 OPS. Seager has a great matchup against the right-handed Aaron Brooks of the Oakland Athletics who currently is posting a 7.26 ERA on the season. Brooks is currently allowing opposing hitters to post a .332 average, .535 slugging percentage, and a .909 OPS. In his one start against Seattle this season, Brooks lasted just 2.1 innings, giving up 6 ER’s on 6 hits. Seager has actually had better luck against LHP’s this season but is still posting a .757 OPS against righties is 1 for 1 with a double and RBI against Brooks in his career. Seager has some decent power and although he does cost a bit on Friday ($4000), I think the matchup that Seager and Seattle has against Brooks is too good to pass up.

Outfield – George Springer – Houston Astros

I’ve gone with George Springer a lot this week and I’m going to with the talented right-fielder once again as he is hitting .370 over the past week and is playing in a very meaningful game on Friday night. Springer missed a lot of time this season due to injury but still has decent season numbers as he has posted a .270 average with 15 HR’s, 39 RBI’s and 15 SB’s. Springer has a great matchup against Rubby De La Rosa of the Arizona Diamondbacks who enters the game with a 4.56 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the season. De La Rosa has been solid against RHB’s this season but has been really struggled with the HR Ball as he has given up 31 HR’s this season. Springer has posted a .261 average and .755 OPS against RHP this season and I think that his power/speed potential is too much to pass up tonight for a cost of just $3200.

Outfield – Kyle Schwarber – Chicago Cubs

Kyle Schwarber has been a great addition to the Cubs roster this season as the talented rookie catcher/OF is currently hitting .247 with 16 HR’s and 43 RBI’s in 67 games played this season. Schwarber has a tough month of September but is faring better as of late as he has posted a .294 (5-17) average over the past week. Schwarber has a good matchup against Ariel Pena who enters the contest with a 3.91 ERA in 5 GP this season. Pena has struggled against LHB’s as he is allowing LHB’s to post a .517 slugging percentage and .953 OPS. Schwarber has been great against RHB’s this season as he has posted a .281 average, .567 slugging percentage, and .962 OPS. Schwarber has recorded 3 HR’s and 7 RBI’s against the Brewers this season. Schwarber is currently riding a 3 game hitting streak and is a great play on Friday assuming that he does get the start tonight.

Outfield – Steve Souza – Tampa Bay Rays

Steve Souza has shown some great flashes of his potential this season as although the rookie right-fielder for the Rays is only hitting .227 on the season, he has collected 16 HR’s, 40 RBI’s and 12 SB. Souza has been great as of late as over the past week he is hitting .300 (6-20). Souza has a decent matchup against the left-handed Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays who enters the game with a 3.76 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Buehrle was hit hard against Tampa Bay in his recent outing last Sunday as the veteran allowed 4 ER’s on 5 hits in 6.0 IP. Buehrle is allowing opposing hitters to post a .276 average and .739 OPS against him this season. In his career against Buehrle, Souza has posted a .333 (3-9) average with a solo HR. Souza has been solid against the Blue Jays this season as he has posted a .286 (12-42) average with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. Souza is currently riding a 7 game hitting streak and I think a good value play for a cost of $2600 on Friday.
