January 3, 2017
The new year is in full swing, and it’s always a good time to check out the fantasy hockey waiver wire for those diamonds in the rough. Let’s check out a few of the recently-trending players and see if anyone’s good for your lineup.
Anthony Mantha, LW/RW, Detroit Red Wings: Mantha is the top waiver wire add this morning, thanks to a solid run of games. In his last six appearances, he’s racked up five goals and four assists.

That’s a points streak of a half-dozen games for Mantha right now, and he’s got nine goals with seven assists on the season alongside a plus-10 rating. His next game will be tomorrow night in Anaheim as the road trip rolls on.
Mikael Granlund, C/LW, Minnesota Wild: Granlund is still available in about half the fantasy leagues out there, but that will change if he keeps playing like this. In his last six games, he’s got six assists and three goals.
That makes 10 goals and 19 assists with a plus-18 rating this year for Granlund, who also has 66 shots on goal (11 in the last two games). The Wild begin a mini-road trip Thursday in San Jose, so you’ve got a little time to kick the tires here.
Jared Spurgeon, D, Minnesota Wild: Now let’s move over to defensemen and check out Spurgeon, who is the top add at the position right now. In his last three games, he’s got two assists and two goals to his credit.
On the year, Spurgeon has four scores, 12 assists and a plus-23 mark. He’s almost guaranteed to get a handful of shots on goal each night (at least two in four of the last seven games).
Nick Holden, D, New York Rangers: Holden is another defenseman that’s getting added at a good clip this morning. In his last three games, he’s got three goals, an assist and a plus-three mark.
That makes seven scores and 13 assists for Holden this year, and even better he’s got two shots on goal in each of the last five games. He gets Buffalo tonight.
Mikael Backlund, C, Calgary Flames: Let’s finish up with Backlund, who has been a big shooter this year with 94 shots on goal. In his last four games, he’s got three assists and five goals to his credit.
Backlund has 11 goals and 13 assists so far this year and is looking very strong out on the ice. He’s a nice pickup ahead of the Colorado game tomorrow.
