The Barclays will take place this week and provide golf handicappers across the world a chance for a sweet payday if they’re able to pick the winner. Rory McIlroy opens up the tournament with odds of +400, but you guys should know by now that I enjoy looking at some of the bigger odds in hopes of really fattening my pockets. Besides, how many times can McIlroy really win?
Anyways, with the golf season really heating up now, here are some of the names you should consider including on your card this week.
USA TODAY Sports
Zach Johnson - You want a real long shot this week? Try your hand at Zach Johnson with odds of +5000. Johnson has struggled the last couple of weeks and hasn’t been the most consistent golfer, but he did finish second at the John Deere Classic and won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. I guess what I’m trying to say is when Zach Johnson gets hot and puts together four solid rounds of golf, he’s capable of playing with anybody and can win an event. After all, we saw this back in 2007 when Johnson won the Masters Tournament. Johnson has a top 10 driving accuracy percentage, which proves he has the skills to be really effective this week. I’ll throw him a bone with those massive odds.
Phil Mickelson - Is it safe to trust Phil Mickelson again? I know that question is nearly impossible to answer, but Mickelson just finished second at the PGA Championship with a solid score of -15. After a season of not making the cut and shooting above par, Mickelson has shot below par in his last three events and seems to have found his mojo again. If Phil Mickelson can carry his play from a couple of weeks ago into this week, there’s few who are capable of slowing him down. Like Tiger Woods, Mickelson just needed to get his confidence back after some off the course issues and bad play. Assuming Mickelson is anything close to his old self, odds of +2000 to win The Barclays is certainly worth a shot.
Jim Furyk - Jim Furyk hasn’t won a PGA event since 2010, but if there’s anybody who is coming closer than ever, it’s him. Furyk finished fifth at the PGA Championship, second at the RBC Canadian Open and fourth at the Open Championship. Furyk has played in 17 events this season and has eight top 10 finishes. What else does he have to do to break through? Jim Furyk has the fifth best scoring average and the sixth best driving accuracy percentage. The only thing Furyk is missing is a victory and with the way he’s been playing all year it seems like that’s just right around the corner. Furyk is a must play this week, especially with the fact you can get him with odds of +2500 to win.
