The Line: See the Latest Odds

The 2014 Ryder Cup will take place Friday in Scotland, and the Americans look to snap what has been a stranglehold by the Europeans over the years. Europe has won seven of the past 10 Ryder Cups, including the last two. With a combination of history and the players currently scheduled to matchup, there’s no question that Europe is once again the favorites to win it all and keep the tradition going.

Europe is led by Paul McGinley, who is no stranger to big time Ryder Cup moments and has a history of breaking the Americans hearts. As if that wasn’t enough McGinley has a strong team behind him, including the best player in the world in Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter, who is 12-3 in Ryder Cup play. Europe also has probably the most consistent player all season in Sergio Garcia, who has 10 Top ten finishes in 16 played events this season. Team Europe may be a little top heavy, but there’s no denying that it features the best players in the world and experienced guys who certainly won’t fold under pressure. This actually may be one of the stronger teams Europe has had in a while and Team USA will have to play a flawless performance to pull off the upset.

2014 Ryder Cup Pick, Odds, Prediction - 9/26/14

Team USA may not pack as much star power as Europe, but a team that features vets such as Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk should never be taken lightly. Tom Watson is the captain for USA and at the age of 65, it’s safe to say he’s seen just about everything on the golf course and is the right leader for the job. Along with the experience, USA also has one of the hotter golfers on its team in Rickie Fowler, who has finished in the Top 10 in seven of his last eight events. There’s also a little young blood on the team with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reedmaking their first Ryder Cup appearance. Again, there aren’t as many big names on Team USA but it’s not a team to take lightly with a combination of experience and youth.

Right now, USA is a +160 underdog to win the Ryder Cup. While everybody and their brother seems to be backing Europe, I’ll take the value of backing USA.

The Americans are going to want this tournament a little bit more given the fact they’ve been dominated over the years and want to change past history. This is hungry group of guys who seem to play better when their back is against the wall. Also, while Europe has the better team on paper, the USA seems a little bit deeper and not as top heavy. The Europeans have put their chips in with McIlroy and a few others, while the Americans have underrated talent across the board and guys who can contribute as a team.

I think we witness an upset here and the odds certainly beat paying -190 for Europe to win.
