The Players Championship, also known as the fifth major, will take place this week, providing bettors everywhere with a great chance to make some big money. The field this year is stacked, giving us some great value if you look hard enough.
Here are some golfers you should consider putting on this week’s card.
USA TODAY Sports
Henrik Stenson - If you want to avoid the overall favorites in Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth, Henrik Stenson would be your next best option. Stenson won The Players Championship back in 2009 and heads into this event second in scoring average and second in ball striking. Stenson has participated in six events this season and three of them have produced a Top 10 finish. Stenson also has yet to miss a cut this season. You can currently get Stenson with odds of +2200, which is a flat out steal.
Matt Kuchar - Matt Kuchar has had an up-and-down season that looks to be back on track with a fifth-place finish at the RBC Heritage. Kuchar has eight Top 25 finishes in 13 events played this season and has yet to miss a cut. Kuchar is second in sand save percentage and seventh in strokes gained: putting. Kuchar has shown what he can do when he gets that confidence going and he usually does well on certain courses he’s had previous success at. You can get Kuchar with odds of +4500, which is pretty solid considering he won this event in 2012.
Jim Furyk - Well, hello Jim Furyk. Furyk went years without picking up a victory until his first place finish at this year’s RBC Heritage. Furyk also finished fourth WGC-Cadillac Match Play, proving that he may finally be onto something here. Furyk is fourth in driving accuracy percentage and eighth in overall scoring average. This could really be a turning point in Furyk’s season. You can get Furyk with odds of +2500, which is something I’ll take all day long with one of the hottest golfers the last couple of weeks. Ride the Furyk momentum while you still can.
Tiger Woods - You have to have even more confidence in Tiger Woods this week after an impressive showing at The Masters. While taking a lot of time off and only playing in the big tournaments, Woods is easily coming off his best performance in recent memory. Woods has won The Players Championship twice, which includes a victory in 2013. Woods packs a punch with odds of +4500, and if he plays anything like he did in the Masters, he’ll have a shot to win his third title at TPC at Sawgrass.
Rory McIlroy - Of course, you have to always throw a little something on Rory McIlroy, especially when he’s getting odds of +640 to win this week. McIlroy is back in his elite form, as he finished fourth in the Masters and playing terrific last week in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play. McIlroy has finished in the Top 10 the last two years at the Players Championship. Although never winning this tournament, it’s only a matter of time.
