We head to Hawaii this week to tee off the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. This is always a nice event considering every competitor in this match won at least one tournament last season.
Here are some golfers you should consider putting on your card this week.
USA TODAY Sports
Jimmy Walker - Jimmy Walker probably should have won this tournament last season considering he had a four stroke lead with only a few holes left. The fact that Walker lost in a playoff should give him motivation to bounce back. Walker is very comfortable in Hawaii, as he played very well on this course last season and does have a pair of Sony Open in Hawaii titles at home. I’ll gladly take odds of +3200 with a guy who always shows up on the island.
Zach Johnson - Nobody has more experience at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions than Zach Johnson, who will make his ninth appearance. Johnson won this event back in 2014 with a -19 to par. Johnson had a solid season last year with 10 top-10 finishes and his game certainly fits the Plantation Course well. Experience is worth something and oddsmakers believe that’s odds of +2200. I like my chances here.
Jordan Spieth - Any time you can get the best golfer in the world with odds of +470, you have to take it. Jordan Spieth is somewhat of a stranger to this curse, as his only appearance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions was a second place finish in 2014. It’s fair to say that Spieth is better than he was back then, as he has 16 top-10 finishes since 2015 and will be eager to get this season off to another fast start. You can do a lot worse than giving yourself a great chance to make nearly five times your money.
Steve Stricker - If you’re looking for a big boy underdog this week, take a look at Steve Stricker with odds of +15000. Yes, Stricker has just two top-10 finishes since 2014, but he does plan on playing a lot more this season. Also, Stricker did win this event with a -23 back in 2012, which is the second best performance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions over the last six years. It’s been awhile since Stricker has made his mark felt, but it’s hard to ignore the huge odds here with somebody who has shown he can win on this course.
Justin Thomas - Justin Thomas proved himself last year with 15 top-10 finishes and led the tour in sub-70s. Thomas is truly just getting started at the young age of 22 years old and will be eager to build on his first career PGA victory at the CIMB Classic. Thomas is somebody to keep a close eye on this season, as he certainly has plenty of other wins under his belt. You can start backing him this week with odds of +2400.
