This week we stay out west in California, as the Northern Trust Open tees off. This course has produced a playoff in three of the last four years, so there’s a lot of competition and some good value out there.
Here are some golfers you should consider putting on your card.
USA TODAY Sports
Hideki Matsuyama - Hideki Matsuyama is coming off his second PGA victory a couple of weeks ago in the Phoenix Open. Matsuyama has been super consistent this season, which includes three top-25 finishes in five starts and a top-25 finish in nine of his last 11 events overall. Matsuyama is second in strokes gained tee to green, fourth in birdie average and sixth in scoring average. Matsuyama also finished fourth on this course last season. I’ll take Matsuyama and my solid odds of +1400.
Sergio Garcia - Sergio Garcia is well rested heading into this tournament with just one appearance since the calendar has hit 2016. However, Garcia has a top-25 finish in each of his last four starts, which includes an 11th place finish at the WGC-HSBC Championship. Garcia is second in greens in regulation percentage and ninth in birdie average. Garcia also has a couple of top-five finishes at the Riviera Country Club in 2012 and last year. Garcia is certainly worth a stab with odds of +2500.
J.B. Holmes - One golfer who continues to get overlooked by oddsmakers is J.B. Holmes, who is packing odds of +2800 this week. Holmes has to start being a weekly pick considering he hasn’t finished out of the top 25 in five months and had top-10 finishes at the World Challenge, Phoenix Open and Farmers Insurance. Holmes also has several top-15 finishes on this course, which means he’s due for another solid outing that should put him in the running for a victory. Holmes has been super consistent for half a year now, and he’s also 15th in total strokes gained and fifth in driving distance.
Harris English - We can finally put Harris English on our card after a third place finish at the Phoenix Open. It only helps that English is getting odds of +5500. It’s not like English has been playing terrible golf, as he’s missed the cut just once in his last seven events and he has three top-25 finishes during that time as well. English also has a top-10 finish at the Northern Trust Open back in 2010. However, now that English had a major breakthrough and got close to his first win since the 2013 OHL Classic at Mayakoba, we should ride the hot hand and take our chances with big money odds.
Rory McIlroy - Welcome back Rory McIlroy. McIlroy has yet to play in the Northern Trust Open and has had a lot of time off, but he’s still one of the top golfers in the world and has finished in the top-11 in each of his last five events. McIlroy’s game fits very well on this course, and he should be eager to get off to a fast start given all the time off on the PGA. McIlroy’s the favorite this week, but you’re still getting odds of +600. You can’t beat that with a golf club.
