We head back to Florida this week for The Players Championship, an event where players have a chance to walk away with a huge check. This field is always loaded with the top players in the world due to the huge prize fund. Only six golfers have won this event twice or more.
So, let’s get started.
USA TODAY Sports
Here are some golfers to consider putting on your card for the 2016 Players Championship.
Rickie Fowler - Rickie Fowler is the defending champ at The Players Championship and heads into this week in great form. Fowler has finished 20th or better in three of his last four events and is coming off a fourth place finish at the Wells Fargo. Fowler has missed the cut just twice in 12 events overall, and he’s seventh in birdie average, fourth in ball striking and first in all-around ranking. Even though this event doesn’t produce many two-time winners, I’ll play Fowler this week with +1700 odds.
Kevin Na - Kevin na is coming off a fourth place finish at the RBC Heritage and now has eight top-25 finishes in 14 events played this season. Na has been quietly flying under the radar and finds himself 15th in total strokes gained and 15th in scoring average. As for this course, Na has three top-10 finishes in nine appearances at The Players Championship, which includes sixth place last season. Na holds real good value this week with odds of +7500.
Sergio Garcia - Sergio Garcia hasn’t golfed since The Masters, and he’s finished no better than 33rd in his last three events. Garcia is 20th in all-around ranking, 29th in driving distance and 37th in total driving. There’s nothing that really makes you want to play Garcia right now. However, Garcia won The Players Championship back in 2008, and he was runner-up in 2007 and last season. Garcia has become a regular in the top-10 when playing this event and he was a couple bounces away from being only the second player ever (Jack Nicklaus) to win this course three times. I’ll take my odds of +2800.
Charley Hoffman - Another nice long shot this week will be Charley Hoffman with odds of +8500. Hoffman has finished 14th or better in his last three events, which includes a victory at the Texas Open. Hoffman now has five top-25 finishes in 14 events played and is clearly playing his most consistent golf at this very moment. Hoffman hasn’t had a whole lot of success at Stadium Course, but you have to love his current form and these monster odds. Take a shot in the dark with the 39-year-old.
Matt Kuchar - Matt Kuchar has finished in the top-25 in four of his last six events, which includes a ninth place finish at the RBC Heritage. Kuchar has now missed the cut just once and has a top-25 finish in 58 percent of his events overall this season. Kuchar also finds himself 20th in total strokes gained and 14th in scoring average. There’s also the fact Kuchar won The Players Championship in 2012 by two strokes, which is tied for the largest margin of victory here since 2009. Kuchar is in solid form and has won this course before, so I’ll take a stab with +6600 odds.
