Santa Anita Race 8:  #4 Brujo de Olleros - #10 Verrazano - #5 Fed Biz

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

When it comes to Breeders’ Cup weekend, I try not to worry too much about where I think money will end up come post time because these are the toughest races to predict.  With that said, I would be surprised to not see this race not offer value everywhere.  The two favorites on the morning line both drew poorly and are three-year-olds taking on open company, plus I have heard wise-guy-whispers about at least four others in the field.  My top pick is the #4 Brujo de Olleros who put up a big time fight against Graydar last out at Belmont and had Graydar ended up in this spot, he very well could have been the favorite.  He has drawn well, should get a perfect pace to run at, and is coming in third off the layoff – apparently in career form.  #10 Verrazano is interesting to say the least.  He’s had his flashes of brilliance and if he goes off favored at post time I will not disagree with it for a second.  He’s only lost twice but they have both come at misguided attempts at a mile and a quarter.  Those both were extremely poor attempts though and the question remains of how well he can handle pressure.  He has never dealt well with being close to horses and this is by no means a field he can run away from.  There is speed to his inside and his outside and with that fear in mind I am not dying to use him anywhere, but he has certainly shown talent that cannot be completely ignored.  #5 Fed Biz has shown serious versatility over the course of his career that is generally a blessing – but might have been a bit of a curse.  It’s easy to see trying to find the best spot for your horse in the Breeders’ Cup is the best problem in the world to have, but I am sure it wasn’t an easy one.  His last race came at Del Mar in August where he closed very well to win the G2 Pat O’Brien and while he is far from a one-trick pony, if the Santa Anita main track is letting late runners close some ground, he could be very dangerous.
