The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is the final Breeders’ Cup race at Santa Anita on Friday.  It will be run at a mile and one-eighth over the main course for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up with a purse of $2,000,000.  Post time is scheduled for 4:35pm local time (7:35pm ET).

Santa Anita Race 10:  #5 Beholder - #4 Royal Delta - #6 Princess of Sylmar

Breeders' Cup Distaff Selections and Analysis

There may be people questioning whether or not #5 Beholder can make this distance of 9-furlongs, especially against the top fillies and mares around, but I have little worry.  Her lone attempt at the distance produced a second place finish to one of her main rivals in here, but it was quite possibly the best effort in defeat I watched all year.  She was extremely uncomfortable in the post parade and had sat right off of fast fractions after breaking poorly.  Now back on her home course, where she won a Breeders’ Cup race last year and is undefeated around two turns, she’ll have the tall task of making every pole a winning one, because if she wants the lead, there is not much the others can do about it.  I have all the faith in the world this three-year-old can take down both queen and princess en route to establishing herself as racing royalty.  The reigning queen, #4 Royal Delta will not likely go gently.  I have concerns that Smith may press the issue a bit too much in the early stages as she does her best running in the clear.  If she’s developed a sharp distaste for getting dirt kicked at her, this could be trouble.  Beholder has shown that she can be effective tracking the leader in case Smitty takes things that far.  If he feels he has to do that it will come back to bite him in the waning stages.  The #6 Princess of Sylmar would love it if her two main rivals start dueling on the front end.  She is a very nice filly at the tail end of a phenomenal year, but her only chance to take all the money may be if her main two rivals spend the first mile softening each other up.

Unfortunately with only six horses entered, this one is left with a chalky taste, so a good idea may be to take a crack at the Distaff/Classic Special Daily Double if you feel confident in any one of the big three.
