2014 Breeder's Cup Fillies and Mares Sprint Early Preview, Pick, and Odds
The 2014 Fillies and Mares Sprint features a contentious field features a bunch of fillies and mares that can flat out burn, some of which are multiple Grade 1 winners. Among those trying to cap off incredible years, are Artemis Agrotera, winner of the G1 Ballerina, Midnight Lucky, winner of the Humana Distaff and Acorn, both G1s, and Sweet Reason, another multiple G1 winner this year.
Judy the Beauty finished second to Groupie Doll in last year’s edition and Stonetastic boasts a demolition of the G2 Prioress field this summer at Saratoga.
Leigh Court answered any pending surface questions when cruising through the G2 TCA at Keeneland earlier this month, shrugging off Southern Honey and Stonetastic in the process.
Better Lucky is a two-time G1 winner in her own right, although it is tough to consider her a pure dirt sprinter and seems lucky she’ll land elsewhere.
Little Alexis, Living the Life (undefeated in 2 NA starts) and Thank You Marylou finish off the pre-entries.
Early thoughts: It is difficult not to have eyes for Artemis Agrotera after seeing the way she came into her own this year. She appears very tactical, battle tested, and fast. It is important though to remember that she is only a 3-year-old and that the worst race of her career came here at Santa Anita in last year’s Breeders’ Cup. This field is absolutely stacked and a case could be made for at least four different gals to go off favored. It’s probably a pretty good idea to keep an eye out for how these ladies are moving over the SA surface in preparation.
