2014 Breeder's Cup Sprint Early Preview, Pick, and Odds
This year’s Breeder’s Cup Sprint has 21 pre-entries with plenty of possible contenders cross-entered elsewhere, but there’s no place to start like with the defending champion Secret Circle who enters off a questionable effort in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship earlier this month. No doubt it served as a useful tightener as he’s been off since February, his only other race since taking down this crown a year ago. Rich Tapestry who shipped in from Hong Kong to upset that SA Sprint showed he’s a force to be reckoned with, as did Private Zone who blitzed the Vosburgh most recently and would like to atone for his flop in this spot last year.
Bakken has flashed signs of talent this year despite not being able to put up a full campaign, while Palace swept the G1s for this division at the Spa over the summer. Big Macher should feel right at home, boasting a 5-3-2-0 record at Santa Anita including a score in the G2 Portero Grande in April.
Ambition entries include 3-year-old colts Indianapolis, who is a perfect 3-for-3 in his young career and the speedy Fast Anna who will be flying right from the bell.
Other pre-entries include: Bourbon Courage, Mico Margarita, Reneesgotzip, Salutos Amigos, Seeking the Sherif, Work All Week, Wind Fire, Capo Bastone, Bahamian Squall, Indexical, Eddie’s First, Mr. Sexy and Bellarmine.
Early thoughts: The most popular questions heading in to this one will be, “Does Secret Circle still have it?” and “Is Rich Tapestry for real?” Right now I am inclined to answer “who knows?” to the former and “absolutely” to the latter. With that said, there are many more players in this race and other questions that need to be answered. Post-position draw will have a big impact here, obvioiusly.
