2014 Breeder's Cup Turf Early Preview, Pick, and Odds
Of the 16 pre-entered runners in the 2014 Breeder’s Cup Turf, seven of them are European invaders and they will deservingly get first look. Magician is the defending champ, but is the third most daunting foreigner, to be polite. Flintshire and Telescope appear the biggest threats and should vie for favoritism. Whether they will is not my decision alone to make. Flintshire’s second place finish in his last try may not jump off the page, but if that winner, Treve, chose to run in this spot, he would be heavily favored and he would win. If Telescope shows up with his best stuff though, things could get ugly. Chicquita, Just the Judge, and Secret Gesture are all cross-entered in the BC F&M Turf, and along with Brown Panther, they may be a cut below the top trio.
Main Sequence appears the best chance for the American based contingent although it’s not really fair because the vast majority of his races came in GB before crossing the pond and racking up a three race win streak. Hardest Core has put together a nice streak of his own, culminating with the Arlington Million, but that was a bit of a surprise and a full two months ago.
While there is talent, it’s hard to see the rest as anything but overmatched. Others pre-entered: Big Blue Kitten, Big John B, Hangover Kid, Imagining, Twilight Eclipse, Finnegan’s Wake, and Starspangled Heat.
Early Thoughts: If Flintshire and Telescope both bring their A-games, one of the two will find themselves in the winner’s circle. Main Sequence has raced well, but the level of competition he’s faced since coming to North America (horses that will also run here) is inferior.
