Breeders Cup 2014 Preview: Juvenile Turf Pick, Odds, Preview
Of the Euros pre-entered for the 2014 Breeder's Cup Juvenille Turf, only Commemorative and Aktabantay are winners of major stakes on the other side of the pond, but it may be Wet Sail that has the most upside. It’s hard to overlook his 3rd of 23 finish in his last effort, which could provide him with a unique experience edge while improving. The Great War, War Envoy, Faithful Creek, and Ernest Shackelton are also possible invaders.
Startup Nation was heavily favored for Chad Brown when beaten last out in the G3 Pilgrim by Kieran McLaughlin’s Imperia who improved drastically when receiving Lasix for the first time. Brown is also expected to send out Offering Plan who finished third in that same stakes.
Dr. Ramsey is also expected to send out a duo of his own, International Star, the winner of the G3 Grey at Woodbine for Mike Maker and Luck of the Kitten, most recently a winner of an ungraded stake at this same trip for Wesley Ward.
Others pre-entered include Conquest Typhoon, Danny Boy, Hootenanny, Lawn Ranger, Daddy DT, Papacoolpapacool, Majestico and Miltee.
Early thoughts: None of these have necessarily done much to set themselves apart from the pack, which isn’t to suggest that there is a lack of talent. This should be considered one of the more open races of the weekend and the tote board is likely to reflect that. Wet Sail does not seem to be highly touted at this point, and I would be happy to take a big price there based on the education he has received throughout his 2-year-old campaign.
