The defending champion Secret Circle may leave the gate as the favorite despite being soundly beaten by my top choice in his last start.  That did come off an 8-month layoff, so an improvement is not out of the question.  I will not be backing it though.

Two-time Horse of the Year and two-time defending Mile champion, Wise Dan, will certainly be missed in this one.  The role of favorite was reserved for him alone here and it is a shame he won’t be able fight for his crown.  In his absence, the role of favorite will likely be inherited by Toronado, who I strongly considered picking against.  Toronado is the winner of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot in June certainly feels like the one to beat in this race, but I will wait to see what the tote board says before making a final decision as anything shorter than what is represented by the morning line will make it tempting to look elsewhere.  The best alternative is Anodin and if his connections look familiar, it is because they teamed up with his older sister, Goldikova, to win this race three consecutive times from 2008-2010.  While Anodin hasn’t found the winner’s circle this year, his last win comes over firm footing, suggesting he may like his trip to the States, just as big sis did.  Tom’s Tribute is the American-based contingent’s best shot in this one, while the chances are bleak.  Tom’s Tribute boasts two graded scores at Del Mar over the summer and gets the winningest jockey in Breeders’ Cup history along for the ride and  I like him to get in for a minor piece.

I am playing against Seek Again who will likely be bet as the strongest American-based runner, and maybe even as if he has a chance to contend for top honors.  It has been well documented that he needs an inside trip to stay focused, which will be tough to navigate in a large and talented field.

The defection of American Pharaoh isn’t much short of devastating, as he appeared to be an extraordinarily promising colt that was probably looked at as a “free square” by many pick-six players and his absence opens up this race quite a bit.  While Pletcher’s duo will now likely vie for favoritism, let’s take a look elsewhere, as they don’t appear to be a cinch.  Upstart chased Daredevil over a very sloppy Belmont track in the G1 Champagne.  In doing so, Upstart dropped back early then gained some ground on the winner, something nobody else in the race even sniffed, and nobody else throughout the course of the day did with any effect and this NY bred gives the look of a steadily improving juvenile primed for another move in the right direction.  Upstart is the bet at a fair price, despite the less-than-desirable post position.  One Lucky Dane projects as the one to catch, and maybe give Baffert life in this race despite losing his ace.  While coming off only a maiden score, it was One Lucky Dane’s first try on dirt and it was authoritative.  Demand a fair price if you’re leaning toward this one.  Carpe Diem is the one I prefer of the Pletcher squad, although I doubt the odds will make a win bet advisable.  Carpe Diem’s Breeders’ Futurity score at Keeneland was very professional but the jury is out on that field he undressed.

Stephanie’s Kitten is considered by many to be the U.S.’s best shot to take a grass race (outside of the turf sprint), but she will need to work out a trip while getting the necessary pace to close into.  Stephanie’s Kitten came up just short against stiff competition twice over the summer and lost all chance when the gate opened on the Belmont Stakes undercard, but maybe her latest effort, a handy win against inferior competition reminded her how to win.  Expect Stephanie’s Kitten to be flying late and she’ll be very tough to deny.  If anyone is up to the task, it will likely be defending champion Dank who is winless in two tries since taking this crown last year.  Another Euro invader, and another one that will do their best running in the closing stages is Fiesolana, a Group 1 winner at Leopardstown in September as It is tough to count on her late run packing as much punch with all of this added ground.  Truth be told, I thought Fiesolana fit much better in the Mile.

The biggest race of the year comes in Prime Time this year as the 2014 Breeder’s Cup Classic has an 8:35 EST start.

The strong presence of 3-year-olds in this year’s Breeder’s Cup Classic was mentioned in the preview and we’ll stick with that theme as California Chrome is my top selection to take the Championship this year, which will likely lead to a divisional championship and very possibly Horse of the Year honors.  Chrome comes home where he ran some of the best races of his career this spring in preparation for the Kentucky Derby where he showed ten panels is well within his capabilities.  California Chrome drew well for this and is likely to sit off a fast pace and get one of the first cracks at the tiring leaders.  If the Triple Crown campaign didn’t empty his tank, Chrome will be in the winner’s circle while we go to the windows.  Cigar Street is an interesting prospect as he was making his case as a major player in 2013 before being sidelined in the spring.  If you were excited about Cigar Street last year, there’s no reason to back off now, because it looks like he’s rounding into top form at the right time as not only is this the toughest field he’s seen, it is also the longest, but with that comes a fair price.  I certainly won’t argue with you if you think we have yet to see Cigar Street’s best stuff.  Majestic Harbor may not be the third most likely winner, but he’s definitely an interesting prospect at what should be a huge price.  The best race of Majestic Harbor’s career (by far) came over this exact course 5-months ago, and while he got a favorable set up in that one, things could shake out similarly in this one.  Majestic Harbor will get the fast pace he wants, and we know neither the surface nor the distance will be an issue.  Worth a look at the very least.

The undefeated Shared Belief will go off favored and he’ll have to prove to me that he can beat this caliber of a field on this surface at this distance.  I’m not buying it at that price.

This year’s edition of the Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile features last year’s champ returning to defend his crow.

Goldencents has been installed as the biggest morning line favorite of the weekend. With the defection of American Pharaoh from the Juvenile, Goldencents could very possibly be the biggest favorite to leave the gate.  To me, Goldencents appears mortal, and while I’m not particularly concerned by his most recent defeat, I am committed to trying to beat him.  With the presence of some other speed in the race, it appears best to try and find someone comfortable with coming from off the pace.  Carve should be content with a front row seat to the fight for the lead, giving him first crack if it doesn’t hold up but his form is questionable coming in to such a tough spot. If Carve is given reason to believe he can compete with these and he’s in great hands if ready to give his best.  Golden Ticket is back for another crack at this crown, and while he fell short last year, he put in a very solid run to close a ton of ground – something nobody else did all day.  This is his preferred distance, but Golden Ticket is another that will need to show up with his A-game.
