WEC 47 Bowles vs Cruz Title Fight ResultsCheryl’s fight picks - RevisitedMy picks were not successful - 5 of 11 fights picked (yikes!) - but the fights were very exciting! I'm gaining new respect for the fighters in the WEC. Previously, I've focused my attention on UFC fighters, but after the last few WEC events, I've become a serious fan of these lighter-weight mixed martial arts fighters.
TKO due to broken hand (with his first punch) – Dominick Cruz becomes the new Bantam Weight Champion. Dominick executes an excellent game plan, staying active and throwing Brian off his game. Looks to me like Dominick took a page out of Lyoto Machida’s book. Brian couldn’t figure out how to battle Dominick’s fighting style. photo credit Dominick Cruz
(-) Miguel Angel Torres vs. Joseph Benavidez That cut from an elbow to the forehead made a guillotine too much for Miguel to handle. Benavidez, is short, strong and well-trained at the Uriah Faber’s Alpha Dog camp. Crisp and heavy legs kicks made Benavidez look sharp against Miguel. One more tough night for the ex-champ – wonder what’s next for Miguel. Submission of the Night: Benavidez guillotine on Torres
(+) Jens Pulver vs. Javier Vazquez Maybe it’s my imagination but it felt like as soon as Javier got Jens to the ground, some of the steam went out of Jens. Javier has beautiful, technical jiu Jitsu – his punches could use some more work. Keep your head over your hips, buddy. Beautiful (painful) arm bar to finish Little Evil. I really want Jens to stop before any real damage happens. I love that little fighter.
(-) Deividas Taurosevicius vs. L.C. Davis This is one of the fights I was most interested in seeing. I picked against Deividas last time, so I picked him to win this time – but then, half-way through the fight, I started cheering for L.C. Forgot who I picked! Fickle woman, that’s me…lol! Both men are strong and showed off their Muay Thai skills with knees and high kicks flying. L.C. is hard to take down, but not impossible. Unfortunately, L.C. took a couple of low blows that went un-noticed by the ref, but were apparently, noticed by the judges. Both guys fought well. Neither one looked tired at the end of three rounds. Lot of respect – they both were well-prepared to neutralize the other’s offense. Left in the hands of the judges, the fight could have gone either way. One judge ruled it a tie, two judges scored the bout 29-28. Winner – L.C. Davis by split decision.
(-) Bart Palaszewski vs. Karen Darabedyan Bart was getting hammered, but didn’t lose his cool and finished Karen with an arm bar in the first round. Awesome fight with Karen dropping serious elbows on Bart – but Karen couldn’t hold on for those last precious 20 seconds to get to the end of the first round. Experience pays for Bart Palaszewski as he locks up Karen’s free arm. Karen looked great in the fight, but left his arms free. I’m sure he’ll correct that situation before we see him again in his next WEC event.
(+) Scott Jorgenson vs. Chad George Chad had a short visit to the cage before going to sleep (31 seconds). First seconds of the first round, Chad shoots on Scottie and Scottie locks a guillotine on Chad’s neck. Good night, Sweet Prince. Scottie didn’t even break a sweat.
(+) Danny Castillo vs. Anthony Pettis Followed by five unnecessary additional punches, a head kick knocks out Danny Castillo. Anthony Pettis takes Danny to the mat – the hard way.
Undercard Fights Not Shown on Versus(-) Ricardo Lamas vs. Bendy Casimir A competitive standup battle dramatically ended when Lamas faked an attack and charged at Casimir, who dropped in for a takedown and absorbed a brutal head-snapping knee that sent Casimir’s mouthpiece flying and knocked the soft-spoken Frenchman out cold. update from wec.tv
(+) Leonard Garcia vs. George Roop A questionable referee point-deduction cost George Roop victory in an emotionally-charged, wildly entertaining scrap with veteran Leonard Garcia that was worthy of Fight of The Night. update from wec.tv
(+) Fredson Paixao vs. Courtney Buck Do not let Fredson Paixao take you down. Do not let Fredson Paixao pass your guard and take your back with both hooks in. Because when those three things happen, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion is likely to choke you unconscious, which is exactly what he did at 2:39 of the first stanza to Courtney Buck. update from wec.tv
(-) Chad Mendes vs. Erik Koch In a battle of unbeatens, wrestling standout Chad Mendes used takedowns and top control to score a unanimous decision victory over the very scrappy Erik Koch. Though Mendes is said to possess considerable punching power, he wanted no part of a standup war with Koch, who repeatedly peppered him with punching combinations for the limited time he was on his feet. In fact, Koch held his hands dangerously low throughout the fight, inviting Mendes to charge him or shoot on him. It seemed that Koch was looking for a big knee or high kick, and in the third round – likely knowing he had dropped the first two rounds on the judges’ scorecards – he scored with a high kick that opened a deep gash over Mendes’ right eye that bled profusely and threatened to stop the fight. However, the doctor surveyed the cut and allowed it to continue, and Koch immediately loaded up on high kicks and punching combinations, particularly toward the right eye, in a desperate quest to stop the fight. Late in the fight, Mendes was able to score a takedown and suffocate Koch to earn the unanimous decision by scores of 30-27 across the board. update from wec.tv
How did Hayley do? Battle of the Female Fight Pickers! Championship Fight Results Hayley’s fight picks - Revisited Tough night for me with my picks! There was an interesting side note though. Cowboy Cerrone was asked about his upcoming WEC bout with Ben Henderson on April 24th, 2010. Cowboy, of course, started trash talking. I tweeted Ben and he tweeted me back. That was cool. Can't have Cowboy talking about my boy, Ben, like that.
@SMOOTHone155 oooh! Cowboy is talking trash - talking about standing up & knocking out - he must of got confused & forgot who he's fighting SMOOTHone155 @thatgirlisfunny hehehe...
