The Baltimore Orioles and the Houston Astros face off on Thursday in Baltimore as they close out their series.

The Baltimore Orioles reminded everyone on Wednesday that there is a reason they actually play the game as they were pasted by the Astros. Steve Peace had two hits, Mick Markakis had two hits, and Chris Davis had a hit as the Orioles failed to score on seven hits. Starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez allowed nine hits and nine runs while striking out five over 3.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 3-2 on the year. For Thursday’s game the Orioles start Bud Norris who was traded to Baltimore on Wednesday. For the season Norris has allowed 135 hits and 55 earned runs while striking out 90 over 126 innings for a 6-9 record and a 3.93 ERA.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros have the worst record in baseball but that doesn’t mean they are going to roll over for anyone. On Wednesday Jason Castro had three hits including a home run, Matt Dominguez had four hits including a home run, and Robbie Grossman hit home run as the Astros scored 11 runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher Bret Oberholtzer allowed three hits and struck out six over 7.0 scoreless innings to get the win and go to 1-0 on the season. For Thursday’s game Houston starts Jordan Lyles who has three no decisions and three losses in his last six starts. For the season Lyles has allowed 103 hits and 49 earned runs while striking out 59 over 89.2 innings for a 4-4 record and a 4.92 ERA.

Baltimore is 6-2 in their last eight games against the AL West, 10-5 in their last 15 games as a home favorite, and 2-7 in their last nine games overall. Houston is 15-43 in game three of a series, 14-40 against the AL East, and 4-22 in Lyles’ last 26 road starts. Houston is 3-9 in the last 12 meetings of these two.

While pitchers against their old teams isn’t a spot I usually like to be it appears to be the better play here with Baltimore.
