The New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals face off on Sunday at Citi Field as they close out their interleague series.
The New York Mets rallied late on Saturday to get their game with the Royals into extra innings, but in the end they didn’t have enough to win as they fell in extra innings. Daniel Murphy had two hits including a home run, Josh Satin had two hits, and Eric Young had a hit as the Mets scored three runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Jeremy Hefner allowed eight hits and three runs, while striking out six over 6.0 innings to not get a decision as David Aardesma took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year. For Sunday’s game the Mets start Zack Wheeler, who hasn’t lost in over a month. For the season Wheeler has allowed 38 hits and 18 earned runs, while striking out 36 over 45.2 innings for a 4-1 record and a 3.55 ERA.

The Kansas City Royals continued their strong play on Saturday as they gutted out a win on the road in New York. George Kotteras hit a home run, as did Justin Maxwell, while Miguel Tejada had three hits and Eric Hosmer had two hits and the Diamondbacks scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Bruce Chen allowed four hits and a run while striking out eight over 6.0 innings, but it was Kelvin Herrera who got the win to go to 4-5 on the year and Greg Holland earned his 29th save. For Sunday’s game the Royals start Ervin Santana who is having the best season of his career. For the season, Santana has allowed 123 hits and 49 earned runs while striking out 115 over 145.1 innings for a 7-6 record and a 3.03 ERA.
New York is 15-6 in their last 21 games following a loss, 16-6 in their last 22 interleague games, and 5-0 in Wheeler’s last five starts. Kansas City is 11-1 in their last 12 games, 8-1 as a road favorite, and 5-1 in Santana’s last six starts.
This one looks to be another battle and like the others, I expect the Royals to emerge with a win.
