The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers face off on Tuesday in Cleveland for game one of their interleague series.
The Cleveland Indians appeared to have Monday’s game against the Tigers in hand but they let it slip away and it could come back to haunt them at the end of the season. Michael Brantley had two hits and Jason Kipnis, Carlos Santana, and Jason Giambi all had hits as the Indians scored two runs on five hits. Starting pitcher Corey Kluber allowed six hits and struck out six over 7.1 scoreless innings to not factor in the decision as Chris Perez blew the save and took the loss to fall to 4-2 on the season. For Tuesday’s game the Indians start Justin Masterson who has won his last three starts. For the season Masterson has allowed 123 hits and 58 earned runs while striking out 160 over 156.2 innings for a 13-7 record and a 3.33 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers looked like they were certain losers on Monday but they rallied late and grabbed the win to add another game to their lead over the Indians. Alex Avila was the hero hitting a three run home run, Victor Martinez had three hits, and Torii Hunter had two hits and the Tigers scored four runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Anbal Sanchez allowed four hits and two runs while striking out 11 over 7.2 innings to not get a decision while Al Alburquerque got the win to go to 2-2 on the season and Joaquin Benoit earned his 13th save. For Tuesday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who is having his worst season in five years. For the season Verlander has allowed 147 hits and 62 earned runs while striking out 138 over 143.2 innings for a 11-8 record and a 3.88 ERA.
Cleveland is 10-2 in their last 12 games, 35-17 in their last 52 home games, and 9-2 in Masterson’s last 11 home starts. Detroit is 5-1 in their last six road games, 22-7 in their last 29 games, and 1-4 Verlander’s last five road starts. Detroit is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings of these two.
Runs are going to be tough to score here and my first free pick is on the under. I also have a free pick on the winning side and I will give out that free pick on Tuesday’s 1stQuarter Podcast.
