The Cincinnati Reds welcome the San Diego Padres to Great American Ball Park on Friday.

San Diego won't be challenging in the National League West although I've seen some good things coming from this team in 2013. If the Padres get hot than reaching .500 is a possibility, but that could be unrealistic because the offense hasn't been consistent enough. San Diego has dropped three of four after a 10-3 loss to visiting Baltimore on Wednesday with neither the bats or arms doing well. Starter Eric Stults gave up three runs (two earned) in seven frames, but Luke Gregorson, Colt Hynes and Sean O'Sullivan combined to give up seven runs in the final two innings. The bats couldn't respond to the late burst with seven hits and two BB with Jedd Gyorko providing the offense with a three run bomb. San Diego opens the series with the Reds with Andrew Cashner on the hill. Cashner has been on a bit of a run with three consecutive victories with eight runs allowed on 14 hits and eight walks in 19 frames.

Cincinnati is in a tough spot simply by being in the National League Central with Pittsburgh and St Louis. Having said that, the Reds might be in third but are only a short hot streak away from taking over the division. Cincinnati has won three of four after knocking off the visiting Athletics by a 6-5 count on Wednesday which was is always a good sign when this team scores. The offense scored early and often to make a winner of Homer Bailey who wasn't at his best with five runs plated in 5.1 frames. The offense saved the day with their ten hit, four walk attack producing a Jay Bruce homer and three RBI's, while Corky Miller smacked a pair of run scoring doubles. Veteran Bronson Arroyo takes the ball Friday to kick off the weekend series with the Padres. Arroyo has not been sharp in back to back defeats in which he has allowed ten runs on 16 hits in nine innings.

Cincinnati is the far better team but I have trouble laying the chalk with Arroyo although I'm not sure Cashner can get the job done. I guess I'd rather make a small play on the Padres instead of playing the big juice, but this is going against the gran here...
