The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals start a pivotal National League East series Friday, with both teams quite desperate.
Washington possibly more so, having just been swept at the Atlanta Braves, falling 6-3 on Thursday. The Nats tied things up twice via Jayson Werth's home run and Ian Desmond's fielder's choice during the bottom of the fourth and seventh.

Philadelphia blasted the Chicago Cubs 12-1 Thursday, thanks to a six-run explosion during the fourth. The Phillies were 6-of-12 with Runners In Scoring Position. Chicago was 1-of-12. Philadelphia dragged in nine runs during 3.1 frames off of Jeff Samardzija (6-11, 4.23 ERA).
John Mayberry Jr., Michael Martinez, Darin Ruf, Nate Schierhotz, Carlos Ruiz, Chase Utley and Donald Brown drove in runs off of Samardzija. Minutes after Samardzija's removal, Cody Asche went deep. During the eighth inning John McDonald went yard.
The Phillies offer John Lannan (3-4, 4.10 ERA) on Friday. Lannan is 1-3 on the road, falling to the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals, surrendering 14 runs during 10.2 frames. Lannan's one away win came really eaisly 16-1 June 28, by yielding only one run during seven innings.

Haren is 3-4 in Washington, tumbling his last three appearances.
The Phillies are 3-0 against the Nationals when Haren is on top of the hill this season.
