John Lackey (7-9, 3.21 ERA) tries to snap a three-game losing streak in the series finale with Kansas City. Two of the three defeats came on the road with Lackey allowing seven runs during 12.1 innings at the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros. Boston was shutout both affairs and was also blanked at the Los Angeles Angels and Toronto Blue Jays when Lackey ran out to the hill.

Lackey also fell three times in May away appearances yielding 11 runs during 17 frames at the Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers. Shields has only beaten TB at home letting in two runs during seven frames. The Royals fell 4-3 to the Sox April 20 in Boston despite Shields yielding a run during six innings. Versus Shields the Red Sox are 59-of-217 with 32 RBIs, half David Ortiz's. Kansas City continues to sizzle.
