The New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers take the field in afternoon action on Sunday.

One thing was obvious in the Tigers win over the Yankees on Saturday and that was there was no hang over from Friday's defeat. Actually there were two things that were obvious; the bats are alive and well. Both the arms and bats impressed in a 9-3 rout of New York with Anibal Sanchez holding the Bronx Bombers to two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out eight in seven frames. The offense unleashed a 17 hit attack that saw Torii Hunter go deep and drive in four, while Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson went solo. Justin Verlander shoots for his third straight victory when he faces the Bronx Bombers on Sunday. Verlander has given up two total runs over 14 innings in defeating Cleveland and Washington.

After surviving a late Detroit come back to win in extra innings Friday, the Yankees were unable to keep the momentum going Saturday with neither the work on the mound or at the plate putting up much of a fight. The defeat left the Bronx Bombers scrambling to stay above the .500 mark and that's not a good place to be in the American League East. The Yankees didn't have much going for them Saturday on the mound and at the plate and have their backs against the wall as far as the postseason is concerned. Starter Phil Hughes gave up four runs over 4.1 frames followed by Preston Claiborne who was tagged for four more in one inning. That was game over with the New Yorkers managing only six hits and a walk, with Lyle Overbay driving in all three runs. Veteran left hander Andy Pettitte looks to get his team in the win column versus the mighty Tigers. Pettitte struggled last time out in an 8-1 loss to the White Sox in which he was charged with seven runs through 2.2 innings.

The Yankees have given Verlander problems in the past and he has struggled at times in 2013 which is reason to pause if backing Detroit. I won't write off the Yankees here but I won't be backing them either or laying the chalk...
