The Washington nationals and the San Francisco Giants face off on Tuesday as they begin their series in Washington.

The Washington Nationals were thinking they were going to be competing for their second post-season berth in as many years but barring a miracle the Nationals will be watching the playoffs from home. The Nationals are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 34-28 at home this season, and they are 14.5 games back in the NL East. As a team the Nationals are hitting .243 with Jayson Werth hitting .328, Ian Desmond hitting .277, and Ryan Zimmerman hitting .269. The Nationals pitching staff has an ERA of 3.70 with the starters at 3.69 and the bullpen at 3.71. For game one of their series against the Giants Washington starts Gio Gonzalez who has lost his last two starts. For the season Gonzalez has allowed 119 hits and 55 earned runs while striking out 144 over 140.2 innings for a 7-5 record and a 3.52 ERA.

Washington Nationals vs. San Francisco Giants Free Pick- 8/13/13

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco Giants are the defending World Series Champions but they aren’t looking like they are going to repeat as they have folded over the second part of the year. The Giants are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 21-34 on the road this season, and they are 15 games back in the NL West. As a team the Giants are hitting .258 with Marco Scutaro hitting .304, Buster Posey hitting .300, and Hunter Pence hitting .281. The Giants pitching staff has an ERA of 4.02 with the starters at 4.34 and the bullpen at 3.42. For Tuesday’s game the Giants start Madison Bumgarner who has been the best pitcher on the San Francisco staff this year. For the season Bumgarner has allowed 106 hits and 51 earned runs while striking out 150 over 154 innings for an 11-7 record and a 2.75 ERA.

Washington is 8-1 against a team with a losing record, 37-18 at home against a left-handed starter, and 19-6 in Gonzalez’s last 25 starts against a team with a losing record. San Francisco is 14-29 in their last 43 games overall, 9-21 against a team with a losing record, and 5-1 in Bumgarner’s last six road starts. San Francisco has lost five in a row in Washington.

Washington has played better of late while Bumgarner has been a rock for the Giants and while it is a lean at best I will take the home team in this spot.

Washington Nationals -124
