The St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates face off on Wednesday in St. Louis after an epic 14-inning battle on Tuesday.
The St. Louis Cardinals bailed themselves out of trouble several times on Tuesday as they got the win over the Pirates and narrowed the gap in the NL Central to two. Jon Jay had four hits, Matt Carpenter had two hits, and Allen Craig and Matt Holliday each had two hits as the Cardinals scored four runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed five hits and three runs while striking out six over 7.0 innings to not get a decision as Sam Freeman got the win to go to 1-0 on the year. For Wednesday’s game the Cardinals start Shelby Miller who lasted just one batter in his last outing after being hit in the elbow. For the season Miller has allowed 1-3 hits and 39 earned runs while striking out 132 over 121.1 innings for an 11-7 record and a 2.89 ERA.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had there share of chances to win on Tuesday but they didn’t get it done as they lost to the Cards. Andrew McCutchen had two hits including a home run as did Jordy Mercer while Neil Walker added two hits as the Pirates scored three run on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Charlie Morton allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out three over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Jared Hughes took the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Francisco Liriano who was thumped in his last outing for 10 runs in 2.1 innings. For the season Liriano has allowed 88 hits and 33 earned runs while striking out 107 over 105 innings for a 12-5 record and a 2.83 ERA.
St. Louis is 2-4 in their last six games, 2-5 in their last seven games as home favorite, and 7-2 in Miller’s last nine home starts. Pittsburgh is 6-2 in their last eight games as an underdog, 9-2 in their last 11 games as a road underdog, and 7-2 in Liriano’s last nine starts. Pittsburgh is 6-2 in the last eight meetings of these two.
