TV: FS-Detroit, WPIX

The New York Mets and the Detroit Tigers face off on Friday at Citi Field for game one of their interleague series.

With a strong finish the New York Mets have a chance to finish above .500 for the season but realistically that is the best they can hope for. The Mets are 4-6 in their last 10 games, 26-33 at home this season, and they are 18.5 games back in the NL East. As a team the Mets are hitting .240 with Josh Satin hitting .303, Marlon Byrd hitting .286, and Daniel Murphy hitting .277. As a team the Mets pitching staff has an ERA of 3.72 with the starters at 3.69 and the bullpen at 3.77. For game one against the Tigers the Mets start Daisuke Matsuzaka who makes his first start of the season. Matsuzaka was once seen as an international superstar but he never lived up to the billing with the Boston Red Sox and was injured his past several seasons.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers have run away with the American League Central as they have dominated play within their division. The Tigers are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 33-30 on the road this season, and they lead the AL Central by five games. As a team the Tigers are hitting .281 with Miguel Cabrera hitting .358, Torii Hunter hitting .307, and Jhonny Peralta hitting .305. The Tigers pitching staff has an ERA of 3.52 with the starters at 3.41 and the bullpen at 3.75. For game one the Tigers start Doug Fister who has two no decisions and a loss in his last three starts. For the season Fister has allowed 170 hits and 65 earned runs while striking out 121 over 161.1 innings for a 10-6 record and a 3.63 ERA.

The Mets are 4-1 in their last five home games, 17-6 in their last 23 interleague games, and 1-4 in their last five games against a team with a winning record. Detroit is 5-0 in their last five interleague games, 24-9 against the NL East, and 6-1 in Fister’s last seven starts. Detroit is 1-5 in their last six games in New York.

Matsuzaka has just never been successful or dominating as was expected but maybe the bar was just set way too high. Either way the Tigers are the better team and the Mets aren’t great at home to begin with.
