The Chicago Cubs make the long trip west to visit Petco Park and the San Diego Padres.
The Cubs are absolutely improved, however the past two games have been brutal defeats for the team and their fans. On Wednesday, Chicago came back from a 6-0 hole to tie it at 6-6 before losing 11-6 and on Thursday, a three run rally erased a 4-1 hole in the 9th, only to fall 5-4 in 13 innings. The Cubbies have now dropped nine of eleven, but I don't know if you can pin this loss on any one player. Starter Travis Wood gave up four runs through 6.2 innings before the winner was plated on a ground out in extras. The offense mustered eight hits and walked three times, with Donnie Murphy slamming a two-run bomb in the 9th to tie the game 4-4. Edwin Jackson will be on the bump to face the Padres Friday. Jackson tossed a winnable game in a 6-1 defeat to St Louis, with three runs allowed (one earned) on six hits and four walks in six innings.

San Diego hung around the .500 mark early in the season and the question was whether they could stay there through the marathon 162 game schedule. I think their record answers that question, with a lack of scoring punch being issue number one, followed by pitching that tends to need some help to win. The Padres didn't give their arms much support on Wednesday, but starter Ian Kennedy came up with one of his better efforts of 2013, with four hits and three free passes issued over seven shut-out innings. The bats totaled eleven hits, with Yonder Alonso rapping an RBI single and connecting on a sacrifice fly. San Diego looks to Edinson Volquez to pitch the team past the visiting Cubs on Friday. Volquez picked up an 8-2 victory over the Mets with two runs plated on seven hits and two BB over five frames.
These teams are going no where but San Diego might be a bit better since they are home. I wouldn't bet the house here unless you don't mind living in a tent...
